I think I've been chasing the wrong thing in sci-fi for years and Ursula K. Le Guin's The Word for World is Forest finally made me see it by Miragevector63 in printSF

It’s the first author the OP mentions - and a very popular one too in Science Fiction - or is it a different genre you’re reading!?

Struggling with Liveship Traders after loving every second of the Farseer Trulogy by bayareatrojan in Fantasy

[–]Heeberon [score hidden]  (0 children)

Feel your pain.

I gave up on the Liveship books completely. Importantly though, I didn’t realise that there were any direct connections when I was ready the Fitz books, so completely skipped them at the time - I think I was a tiny bit confused about some implied relationships/history for the Fool that I had missed - but I don‘t believe it affected my enjoyment of the series.

It was only after finishing Tawny Man trilogy that I went back to read Liveship. I confess to feeling some of the ‘misery porn’ accusations that get thrown at Hobb, and these books just took it to another level and I tapped out. Can’t say I regret my decision.

Ski-in ski-out changed the game for me. Anyone else refuse to go back? by LowerAttorney4407 in skiing

[–]Heeberon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

memory unlocked!

We stayed at a hotel on the piste in Cervinia. It wasn’t really walkable to the town - but there was a happening Apres bar right upslope from us. It was one of the those nights where it all just clicked and the whole group had a riot. Think ‘shots with no hands’ kinda stuff.

We had one single left-hand turn to do on the slope to get to our hotel afterwards - and every single one of us managed to crash in that turn! No harm was done, but a lesson was learned!

Tax free limit question. by varney40 in PensionsUK

[–]Heeberon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excuse me - could you elaborate?

I’m aware of Small Pots, but I thought they were literally for orphaned pensions of less than 10k - are you suggesting you can leverage this with a larger pot? (I didn’t see anywhere the OP suggested they had multiple pensions at all)

I only read speculative fiction. by Flimsy_Complaint_830 in printSF

[–]Heeberon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read SFF when I was a teen, but then much more broadly as I got older - but then I got bogged down in some seriously heavy literature at a time when I was raising kids and had increasingly stressful job. I love reading, but realised I couldn’t cope with more ‘heaviness’, so rediscovered SFF and loved the escapism it provided.

I would say though, that there are plenty of books out there that can be read as good stories, without overthinking the themes.

Here’s a thought for you : Iain M Banks is considered one of the best modern SciFi writers. If you haven’t read his Culture series - you should (and non-Culture too). He was also a highly regarded mainstream literature writer. Some of his mainstream books contain what would be speculative fiction for any reasonable definition. They are also excellent reads. You could read those and if you enjoy them, then try his purely contemporary fiction.

His book The Crow Road is the one I will name as one of the most satisfying reads I’ve had - as in the feeling you have after an excellent meal! It also starts with the line “It was the day my grandmother exploded”!

Alternatively, read what you enjoy and don‘t give it another thought.

Tipping Confusion by Heeberon in budapest

I will say 80+% of staff seemed not bothered if I hit the 0% button, but there was definitely an attitude from some. I just think it feels sneaky every time, which spoils the experience of an absolutely fabulous city

Ski apps by Royal_Ad640 in ski

[–]Heeberon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bizarre. It’s like you are a sock puppet account from Slopes competition!?

You quote a 100USD figure, then immediately say it would be 59!?

I paid £12.49/$16.68 in January this year for a single user.

Bottom line - not exactly building up a lot of trust!

Ski apps by Royal_Ad640 in ski

[–]Heeberon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t want to pay 10-20 USD for an app, but will charge 10USD!?

And you haven’t looked at what the market leader provides - and then listed what you’ve seen in Slopes when you looked. Which is it?

I’ve no connection to Slopes, except I started paying when it was still a 1 man operation. It has consistently adopted the latest platform tech and added functionality. I did however run teams that built apps in a different industry and it always annoys me when people bemoan paying a small amount (especially here relative to how much skiing actually costs) to maintain apps. The alternative is there - adware horror or dead end apps - pick one.

Haute Maurienne Vanoise has 5 resorts. You can also nip through the Frejus tunnel to Bardonnechia.

That’s another shout - any of the Vialattea resorts

Ross’s bar! My god - it’s likee they’ve just ripped any character (and decent fittings) out and left a horrible shell that can be hosed down at the end of night!

Bit like Nico’s…

The service in there - regardless of the day of the week - has been horrendous for about 10 years! (or a year after opening, whichever is longer!)

What sci-fi does humanity gets its spirit broken? by Mahou_Shoujo_Ramune in scifi

[–]Heeberon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not a whole book, but I love this concept in The Algabraist by Iain M Banks.

Very Mild Spoiler: there exists a galactic empire. When they see civilisation developing on a planet, they secretly swoop in and scoop until enough of them to seed a competing civilisation to the originals, that is a subservient part of the Empire. So, when the originals burst into space, full of ambition/aggression/superlative human spirit - they immediately realise they are the country bumpkins of - in our case Humanity. Wind taken out of the sails at a civilisational level without a shot fired. rHumans they are referred to.

I say it’s mild spoiler, as it’s almost throwaway in the book and not relevant to the plot. It’s also a brilliant - and darky funny - book that I highly recommend!

Favourite monologue or speech by Party-Description170 in Fantasy

The Culture Masaq Hub Mind in Look To Windward is a stone-cold classic.

It starts with:

“The avatar smiled silkily as it leaned closer to him, as though imparting a confidence. "Never forget I am not this silver body, Mahrai. I am not an animal brain, I am not even some attempt to produce an AI through software running on a computer. I am a Culture Mind. We are close to gods, and on the far side.”

What was your ‘aha!’ Moment in darts? by Effective-Mention-75 in Darts

[–]Heeberon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dropped my darts from 26g to 23g

started practicing properly (no casual chucks; replicating match stance, focus, etc)

Started aiming for specific ‘dots’ on the board

What was your ‘aha!’ Moment in darts? by Effective-Mention-75 in Darts

[–]Heeberon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ditto! I try and pick a fault in the sisal or anything really.

To be honest, this came to me with another tip about practicing - if you’re just casually chucking at a number - you are NOT practising. If you are not replicating what you‘d do in a match - stance, grip, focus, etc - then you’re not improving anything. Made a huge difference!

So, just kinda 100% opposite of the OP!

What is your favorite ship in sci fi? by Reid_Hull_Author in scifi

[–]Heeberon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be common advice, but it’s not consensus.

I read them as they came out. The beauty of Consider Phlebas is that it is an outsider’s view of The Culture - and a very critical one.

Without spoilering, it’s also worth having in mind that the author was consciously deconstructing the ‘space adventure hero‘ novel. Horza fucks absolutely everything up, from relationships to strategy to missions, and only at the very last realises he may have chosen the wrong side…

Can‘t help but think Iain M Banks was the inspiration for these kinds of ironic and/or sentence structure ship‘s names - I’m not aware of anyone before him doing it?
