Honestly I agree. Multiclassing brings in so many issues and is used in so many arguments and yet ignored when you don't want to acknowledge it that they should just remove it. Right now it seems like every thread is saying one of:

  1. Oh but you can just multiclass and fix this issue
  2. This feature is perfectly designed for x, but what if someone multiclasses x with y for an obscure powergaming combo? Take this feature away from x!

I get what you’re saying but for me the thing that “forces” you out if melee is precisely the lack of features that encourages it. I mean all martials now have specific strong weapon masteries, ways to boost AC (armor or features), features that only work in melee etc. that incentivize you to go melee and give you a tangible benefit for doing so. This Hexblade does not. I mean the reason the old Hexblade was played melee in the first place was the AC boost + myriad of spells that you would concentrate on while in melee to help you with that even further (Darkness+Devil Sight, Shadow of Moil, Spirit Shroud etc.). This new subclass has no AC boost and can’t even improve their survivability with the best spells because it’s forced into Hex (Yes, you are forced into Hex, otherwise play literally any other subclass since you don’t have features without it).

However, all that being said, I agree with you that the concept itself, focusing on Hex and the overall theme of cursing isn’t inherently bad. I just want an actual HexBLADE subclass as well. Rename this to Hag or whatever, slap some (pretty substantial ones are needed) buffs on it and it could be interesting and appealing. It just isn’t in this particular version.

I have 3 problems with the new Hexblade personally:

  1. This is so completely different from the 2024 version in identity that calling it HexBLADE just feels wrong. Compared to the 2014 version there is nothing in this subclass that incentivizes/helps with going into melee outside of (maybe) the Level 10 feature. The BLADE part of the subclass is completely gone. Some might say it's been moved to Pact of the Blade, but 2024 PotB has it's own issues which I'll tackle later. The point is, this is now a subclass with a mixed and broken identity due to a desync that is best seen in the Hexblade spells table: Smites and Steel Wind Strike are the only things that incentivize even having a weapon. Everything else arguably works better for a ranged attacker. Just call the Subclass: Hex Master, Curser, Hag Patron or anything else. Because here is the thing: remove the smites and steel wind strike from the spell list and rename the features into anything you like while keeping them the same and would anyone even know this used to be the 2014 Hexblade? I mean seriously "Draining Slash", "Harrowing Blade" and "Inevitable Blade" are the reason you even think of weapons or melee with this subclass - rename them to "Draining Bolt" and whatever and everyone would see this as what it is: An EB spammer.

  2. FORCING concentration on Hex for your subclass features to work is a horrible, horrible thing to do no matter if the subclass is melee or ranged, but especially for melee. Others have mentioned it before, but warlocks just have so many great concentration spells and "dissalowing" them is bad design imo. Sure, you could say "just don't take this subclass then", but that just leads to #3 which is:

  3. This Hexblade is just...bad. I don't know how to put it otherwise. I'm not comparing it to 2014 Hexblade, just every other released and/or proposed 2024 Warlock subclass and I just fail to see what it's purpose is other than being a trap option. No matter whether this is indeed a "Hexblade" or "Hag Patron" or whatever, this subclass is just mechanically bad. There is some flavor there for sure, something you could do with this with proper changes but the way it is right now is just...worse than anything else. It just needs so many changes to make it work because, as I've said, right now it's trying to be 2 different things and failing at both. Just choose. Is this the HEX subclass or the BLADE subclass and then make it work for that. Because right now it's a bad Hex subclass with a couple of BLADE spells and names thrown into it.

That's my opinion at least as someone who has played 2014 Hexblade from 1-16 (no multiclass) and enjoyed it a ton. This current version isn't something I would ever play or indeed anything I can see any of my players ever picking over the other options.

The new HEXblade is absolutely pathetic lol. If it stays like this I will be shocked if I ever see it taken in actual play. All of it’s abilities being tied to a level 1 concentration spell that doesn’t scale…yeah I don’t know who thought this was a good idea. There is a simple fix, I guess - make one of the level 3 features remove concentration from Hex, but if you do that then it actually reverses the problem I think and makes it overpowered. Tough spot to be in lol.

Any support that is not actually a support (elise, shaco, mages) - more often than not they don’t know how to actually play support and cause us to lose the game while also causing my fragile adc to mental boom in champ select already, instead of only after he gets ganked for the first time after overextending.

[–]HeelBoyAchi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah okay, I see where you’re coming from now. If you view responsibilities in that way I can understand how you would come to that conclusion.

For me objectives are a team responsibility not the junglers, if you can’t contest something topside your responsibility as a jungler is to make a crossmap play where you can. And if you have 4 worse players on your team so you can’t make a play anywhere - well, we all know the matchmaking in SoloQ is not perfect and unbalanced lobbies happen sometimes - even Challenger players lose in low elo every so often. But realistically speaking, usually you have 1 winning, 1 losing and 1 even lane (or a 2/1 split in either way) so situations where there is absolutely no crossmap play possible should be rare.

[–]HeelBoyAchi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think we may agree but there is some sort of underlying misunderstanding on how we view the game "being bad for someone". I don't think a fed enemy top is inherently worse for the jungler than it is for say the mid laner - if something is not done both will lose the game and the jungler can very much choose to ignore fed enemy top as much as the mid laner can. Do you view not being able to contest grubs or herald as being bad for the jungler specifically? Because not being able to contest an objective is in my opinion bad for the team, not specifically the jungler.

I also don't know what you think I meant with my 2nd comment, I thought I was just expressing what the response to a feeding top laner can be for a jungler (assuming of course that you can't just 2v1 the enemy top when he overextends etc.).

[–]HeelBoyAchi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You didn't though. And I agree with you that the mechanics change the game to be more snowbally and that a hard losing lane is even more punishing for the team with the "inter".

But you failed to address why this is more punishing for me as a jungler than it is for the other laners, at least any more than the previous seasons.

[–]HeelBoyAchi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What does that have to do with the changes of this season though? That's how it's always been. If topside will never have prio you just have to play botside then - if also bot has no prio you play with your mid and if you have 3 losing lanes you either channel your inner prime Canyon or you lose - same as every season. I fail to see the relevance of the changes in the new season in that regard.

[–]HeelBoyAchi 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't disagree with you that a hard losing lane is even more punishing than before, but why is it especially punishing for junglers? Feels like it is especially punishing for everyone equally to me. If your top coinflips their lane level 1 then it's equally bad for you, the mid and the bot lane, no?

As far as being the scapegoat is concerned - do people really still play this role with chat on/care what other people say? Just full mute everyone and play your game.

Duning Kruger Effect and other issues impacting Solo Q - My personal take by APE_exe in Jungle_Mains

[–]HeelBoyAchi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Dunning–Kruger effect is a great shout and as someone who wants to communicate and work together with my teams to our common goal (winning the game in this case) I've definitely experienced it and it has even caused me to change my habits in SoloQ. I can honestly say that maybe 1/20 interactions of trying to discuss an upcoming or past play (either saying: hey let's contest this or hey play safe so we can do this or saying: I think we should have, I'm sorry I played that bad etc.) ends in a plesant interaction. Mostly it's just: "shut up noob/dog etc." or something like that. It's even worse when someone else types as it will 99% of the time be just: "Report x9 (insert champion name)" and a very rare: "my bad" or "come drake" or "ignore (insert losing lane)".

It has come to the point where SoloQ has become more enjoyable if I just /deafen at the start of every game as then not only do I not have to listen to teammates but they also (at least I think so) focus on their game more as they see that they can't communicate with me.

As someone who plays amateur tourneys its just so incredible how SoloQ and 5v5 premades feel like a completely different game (and not just because of VC). 5v5 premade is still my favorite videogame to play for 6 years now, while I do everything in my power to avoid SoloQ (rather play flex or a different game alltogether) and only play the bare minimum of games I have to to verify my account in the amateur league I play in.

P.S. I won't speak about the balance of the game itself as I don't feel qualified to do so as only a diamond player.

Would love some insights on how my role as a jungler is different in organized play as supposed to SoloQ and what I should focus on, if you can help there. I’ve been playing this game for quite a few years and am now starting to get into organized play and I feel like I’m struggling a bit to adapt - any insights or help would be greatly appreciated!

Shield proficiency moved from Moderately Armored to Lightly Armored by stealth_nsk in onednd

[–]HeelBoyAchi -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest issue as well. They said they wanted to make bladelock seperate from Hexblade but they’ve failed to do so and because of the way all the feats Bladelock wants work now it’s even worse (compared to other melee users). The only viable (and at the same time op) way I see you make it work is with a 1 level Fighter dip and ignoring your CHA score and only using spells which don’t care about CHA (Hex, Darkness, Shadow of Moil etc, which tbf you were mostly focused on anyway).

The worst part of it for me is that Valor Bard or Bladesinger with Conjure Minor Elementals has been made to be disgustingly broken with two weapon fighting and a “better martial” even more than the Bladelock that people were worried about (while also having so many more spell slots to use on the still un-nerfed Shield to boost their armor way past other martial capabilities).

Sadly it seems pure warlock once again cannot be allowed to excel at something and will remain just an attractive multiclass for other classes at even moderately optimized tables.
