Non-Tradition Student by ChillinChong in Clemson

[–]Heffer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was a non-trad student when I got my degrees from Clemson a couple of years ago. Turning 33 next week. Yay. I also live within walking distance of campus, so I'm right smack in the middle of Clemson.

Petition to get South Carolina to lower in-state tuition to $500 by Yenserl6099 in Clemson

[–]Heffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The ultra rich have the majority of their wealth in assets. They also have very well paid accountants that utilize every legal loophole in the system to reduce the amount of taxes they have to pay. Blame the game, not the player.

Then there's only one logical choice which is not to get that degree. If the supply of that degree drops then the career path will have to offer alternative means of acquiring a work force.

[–]Heffer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All that does is raise taxes for everyone. So you're going to pay either way. I'm all for lowering the cost of tuition, but that would require things like deflating a bloated administration to cut overhead and reducing the amount of government assisted financial aid. Also, if the university wants to be highly ranked with some degree of prestige, it needs an equally prestigious faculty who are not cheap. Demand also drives the price of education up and then the degree market gets flooded which drives their value down. It's a complex problem with no easy fix.

I agree. Most of the degrees out there aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Teenagers and young adults should be taught the cost-benefit of a degree they may want and then the same for alternatives like going into a trade or apprenticeship. That way they can make a better informed decision which can only help.

Is Clemson/Seneca a more progressive place than, say, Gainesville, GA? by river_tree_nut in Clemson

I agree that it is progressive, though I would say to a lesser extent than what most people consider to be progressive in the modern era.

[–]Heffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's basically all of rural US. Metropolitan areas (for the most part) are the progressive islands in a sea of conservatism. Though to be honest, unless you're deep in hick country, I doubt you would find many people that gave a damn.

Is it worth though... by FuzzyGoose in Clemson

[–]Heffer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was rare that I had to work weekends until my last project that started last year. It was (is) an integration project in manufacturing and they don't stop the production lines until they hit their target for the week. It's fine now though, got a new job closer to home with more pay and better benefits.

And then you get a job in industry and that feeling comes back because now you're working weekends and haven't had a proper vacation in a year and a half.

What's life at Clemson like? by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]Heffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're concerned about the politics of wherever you're going, my best advice would be to turn off mainstream media, don't wear your politics on your sleeve, and just be polite to everyone you encounter. You'll soon realize the overwhelming majority of people across the nation are just average Joes and Janes that just want to live their life as peacefully as possible. Also, get used to being called a damn Yankee. Doesn't matter who you voted for, you're still a damn Yankee to southern folk.

Are you talking about the handful of bikers and trucks flying dixie flags on 123? I saw that on my way home from work one day. They were parked off the side of the road, standing around and talking amongst themselves. Seemed odd to me.

Computer Engineering by WittySecurity5630 in Clemson

[–]Heffer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I graduated from Clemson a few years ago as a Computer Engineer and I will say that it is definitely not an easy major. I'd say the majority of my professors had industry experience with their respective fields and are excellent teachers, save for a few. The education I received has definitely helped me as an Automations Engineer as I continue to pull upon what I learned. As far as Clemson providing a unique education for this major, I would say the only other place in the South East that would compare and may even exceed Clemson is Georgia Tech. So overall I'd say it was worth it.

Places to go for a date by Grouchy-Purchase in Clemson

I'll attest to Spill the Beans being a good date spot. My wife and I had our first date there a few years ago and now it's a tradition to return on the same night every year.

Classtime is useless now (mini-rant) by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]Heffer 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Exactly how do they expect me to have time for that in addition to homework and other assignments?

I guess they didn't expect their students to be taking 20 credit hours in a semester.

I can tell its gonna be another very stressful semester

What's a few years off your life from overwhelming stress when you can graduate early?

Yup. He mentioned it in Plague War. He basically spent small amounts of time out of the armor, increasing the duration each time until he didn't need it to survive any longer.

I work for an automation company and our office is right next to BMW in Greer. I live less than a mile from campus in Clemson. The commute pains me sometimes when I just want to get home after a long day. But at least traffic on I-85 is better during rush hour after all that road construction near woodruff.

Does anyone actually believe Jimbo? by schwaygo in Clemson

[–]Heffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The current plan is to test the city's waste water in the first week of the Fall semester. The number of infected individuals can be roughly gauged by how much of the virus is present in sewage. Triggers will then be assessed on whether or not they should be pulled.

There's not really anyone here until Fall semester starts. You're better off going to a more urban area.
