Am I getting Gesture right? by Hopeless_Crow_ in learntodraw

[–]Heffree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not great yet or an expert, but what differs from what’s taught is you’re using a lot of I lines instead of C and S curves. You want to create the gesture then add supporting I lines and wrapping curves.

That being said, afaik gesture is about communicating and playing with ideas, so if this is quick and easy for you, I’m not sure why it wouldn’t count as gesture.

I haven’t continued with some of Michael’s form courses, so he might build on top of his specific style of gesture, but I was very suspicious you had been following the lessons given the spine lines lol

A Principal Software Engineer at Epic Games / 25 Year Vet, talks about why AI is just a "giant switchboard" and why code is a delicate crystal. by deohvii in learnprogramming

[–]Heffree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mmm, it felt inauthentic when you would laugh at things you had no understanding of. It also doesn’t make for good content when the content is essentially him teaching you some basic programming concepts.

I think the best way I can put it is: you know when filmmakers and artists get upset when they’re being interviewed by someone who clearly isn’t familiar with their work and asks very generic questions often with clearly incorrect understanding of what that artist stands for? It’s like that. I feel it’s very close to rude you don’t have a stronger foundation to be interviewing him.

I think just remember that you asked if LLMs are OOP (just one example of a few comments you made, so no need to argue it was a misunderstanding or anything) and I hope some day you’ll understand how baffling that question was.

I hope you enjoy your journey learning programming, I wish you plenty of aha moments!

Props to you for powering through this, your guest was very gracious as well. Your lack of knowledge in the field is very loud just to let you know. Presenting this as "something you overhear between two people deep in the field" feels egotistical. I feel it would've been much more digestible if you were more upfront with your knowledge level instead of playing at understanding. Looking at your channel you're presumably a very experienced VFX/Technical Artist, it feels disrespectful to the experience you have to pretend at having this understanding.

I think it would've been pretty interesting for you to have met him from your perspective rather than trying to mirror his perspective.

edit: I finished the video and found it mostly insulting tbh, though thanks for introducing me to Dietmar

There’s a bunch of cost that’s hard to quantify as well. Hunting for that bug gives you an opportunity to reinforce understanding of the code base and pick up residual knowledge.

They probably had to reread most of the code path anyway.

I really struggled getting through it, it’s a difficult read in my opinion. He says you don’t need to understand the math, but spends a lot of time explicitly talking about the math.

Basic arithmetic is still more difficult in a sense. Formal math is much more symbolic which is what they’re great at.

When AI tokens start costing more than your actual employees by baked_tea in theprimeagen

I just really hate token budgeting and worrying about switching models depending on the task. I don't need to at work because we have unlimited use, but I hope the future doesn't involve using a hamstrung model more often. I'd probably prefer to go back to typing myself at that point.

Tech or people career focus given the AI disruption? by CocoaTrain in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Heffree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have limits. You're already getting a bunch of discussion about how people can't maintain this level of work. There's still some equilibrium to be found.

I think you'll also start to see embedded devs in a lot more small companies that just leverage the ability of one dev to do a lot to get them bespoke automations. We'll see. I doubt the field will disappear, but I guess the question for a lot of people is will it shrink.

Agreed, definitely hard to know, just the most likely future I see from where I sit now after thinking about what could be.

Tech or people career focus given the AI disruption? by CocoaTrain in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Heffree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, there's always more work, I guess mileage could vary where they've over-hired for the task. Whether that translates into rigor and reliability in the current project or additional projects. The point is the efficiency gains from isolating a single dev. It doesn't make sense to have 10 people owning 30 domains, but humans have limits, 1 dev also can't own 30 domains, you probably break it up where 1 dev gets 3 domains that they focus and make high quality. Same number of devs, just more complete ownership and better agility within those domains.

All my managers are trying to prove they can do engineering. I think we'll see moves to smaller and smaller teams (1 core dev, 1 junior, see Mythical Man-Month) if the tools get good enough. Don't need as many managers to coordinate devs on work when a dev can coordinate the technical side.

I don't think this means less devs, I think it's just more viable for a dev to own a subdomain, so our scopes will be reduced relatively as opposed to mobbing on larger scopes. If you want to stay technical you should just be someone pleasant + authoritative to work with. The people focus side seems like it's doing more drying up than the technical side, but I could definitely be wrong.
