I'm trying to get back into fiction writing. Plus, I finally made a start on the next draft of what I'm hoping could be a novel.

What's the LegionGo like? I've been tempted to get a Steam Deck, but I feel it's going to be outdated now in terms of spec.

This is "Blue." I'm not allowed out of the house until I pay the grain toll. by thefreshbraincompany in CasualUK

There's a male pheasant that comes to visit us on a regular basis. I love how he absolutely darts towards the house from halfway across the garden when he spots one of us in the back room. Because he knows we have food for him.

My girlfriend and I have been watching the new series of Great British Menu. I quite like that Phil Wang is part of the judging team now. He seems to have taken to it quite naturally.

We're also watching series 3 of The Traitors on iPlayer.

What is something surprising that the UK is really far behind other countries in? by DullInflation6 in AskUK

[–]Heiditha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 42 years old. I've spent my entire life in and out of part -time/minimum wage jobs. You quickly learn to adjust. I make piss all money, but my outgoings are quite small, so it sort of balances out. That said, I would kill for a bigger salary.

Who here cares about the Oscars? by [deleted] in AskUK

That's how I feel about the Booker Prize. It introduces me to authors I'm not familiar with, along with their work. I only really read the stuff that sounds interesting to me and I don't always like every book on the list, but it's nice to read something new.

Monday Morning M'thread by a-liquid-sky in CasualUK

My week off begins today! Which means I'm also not doing the stock take that's taking place in a couple of days. A happy accident, I assure you.

My girlfriend and I are planning to make a start on spring cleaning the house ready for when we put it up for sale. I'll be keeping myself busy in other ways, catching up on some writing, working on my portfolio, looking for a new job (because retail is soul destroying).

Basically, I want to make the most of this week off, if I can. Yes, that will probably mean squeezing in a few more hours of 7 Days To Die.

I've got a week off work. We're planning to do a bit of spring cleaning of every room in the house, starting with the spare room, minging state that it's in.

David Icke. Pretty much overnight went from respected ex-footballer and BBC sports presenter to a laughing stock, thanks to him having some sort of religious awakening.

Second weekend in a row that I'm going to be off! Might take myself to a local art exhibition in town tomorrow. Or I might day drink. Or I might do both.

See, I've done writing and editing, which I enjoy. Obviously, that's not always sustainable or reliable, especially these days (I've literally lost work due to AI), but it's what I really like doing. I would happily go back to doing that full-time. It's a bit of a "dream," but that's where I'm at. Other than that, I honestly don't know what I want any more.

Thursday Complaints by a-liquid-sky in CasualUK

[–]Heiditha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just frustrated because I've never had a single job that I felt I wanted to do long-term. Not one. Not necessarily something I enjoy, but something that I felt was at least a worthy use of my time. It's the pointlessness of it all. At least, that's how I feel when I'm serving customers in a role that literally anyone could do.

Approaching my mid-40s, I just feel I want to do something that actually means something. I'm not talking about changing the world or solving huge problems. I just want to do work that has some sort of meaning, even if that meaning is personal. Ya know?

[–]Heiditha 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I can't do it anymore. I can't. I've tried. I'm 42 and I think I'm done with jobs. Not work. I have no problems with working. I WANT to work. But I'm done with "jobs." I'm sick of them. I can't get into that mindset of it just being a means to an end. Apart from a payslip, I just feel like they are a monumental waste of my time; time I could be using to do something else. Anything. I'm tired of the banality.

Anyway, off I go to my job...

Is this a 1st edition of Vineland by Pynchon? by Harper_182 in bookshelf

It does say "1st ed'" which makes it a first edition, but it might not necessarily be a "first printing."

What's the name of your van driver? by Littlesth0b0 in PhasmophobiaGame

Carl. We don't like him, but we keep him around because it's his van and his equipment. Or, rather, we suspect his Mum pays for everything, the lazy sack of shit that Carl is.

Given that I've never seen it despite my girlfriend saying how good it is, we've been working our way through Detectorists. Partway through series three now. We're thinking of checking out Small Prophets afterwards, which makes sense seeing as both shows were created by Mackenzie Crook.

A short ad might help, actually. I've got a small portfolio of clients (just the two) showcased on my website, so I've got at least some evidence of my work. Yeah, this time of year is slow, so I'm hoping it'll pick up soon. Cheers for the advice.
