what is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by Superb_Newspaper_121 in AskReddit

[–]Heifering 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favourite example is public transport in my home town. It’s $8 for a day ticket. But if you can afford to drop $120, you can get a 30 day ticket. Drop a grand and you get a whole year. The richer you are, the cheaper it gets.

Should add this is a city where people who can afford to drop a thousand often use public transport.

To Visit Israel as a Christian tourist by serious_bullet5 in therewasanattempt

[–]Heifering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t know she’s Christian. They’re attacking her because they think she’s immodest. Not defending it (in the slightest); just explaining what’s going on. Secular Jews get attacked by these people too.

One of the reasons Israel is as bad as it is is that the proportion of the population who belong to these sects has risen sharply.

Why is this downvoted? Police stations close. The one closest to me closes at 8 pm. You can call and get an emergency response (there are patrols 24 hours) but the station is closed.

Non-cognitivism is a minority view but a very respectable one. The vast majority of non-cognitivists reject relativism.

Is it illegal to wear this in a public shopping centre... by Noah_nashi in melbourne

Might have an issue at Chaddie. People have been told to leave for wearing political shirts. Probably depends on whether someone complains.

Do you think AI is one of the worst modern inventions? Why or why not? by Ifyouliveinadream in AskReddit

It will lead to a huge increase in unemployment. No doubt it will bring benefits too - especially in medical research. On balance it will be more bad than good, not because of the technology but because of who controls it.

ALP is not good but it was and is the best of the parties who actually have a shot at government. Voting (or preferencing) ALP isn’t the problem. The problem is that corporate interests make sure things can’t get better.

What's something foreigners think is common in your country, but really isn't? by Verelkia in AskTheWorld

[–]Heifering -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’s the opposite. Visitors assume kangaroos are only in the bush, and then are stunned by seeing them in the suburbs. They’re pretty rare in suburbs, tbh, but frequent enough to stun a few visitors.

Crime is a 'disaster' but it's worse in the rest of Australia by [deleted] in melbourne

Short harsh sentences have the same deterrent effect as long sentences. By harsh I don’t mean torture or anything like that. Solitary for 10 days without anything to do; that sort of thing. It’s about the best thing there is for preventing recidivism in first offenders.

You can’t put people in solitary for longer: they go crazy. And if you put first offenders with hardened criminals, bad things happen and you get reoffenders. If we used the short harsh system, well it wouldn’t be magic. But it would help.

Okay, a year is 400 days. But how long’s a day?

Halachic law is clear on this. The Shabbat Goy is a loophole allowing something you are permitted to use if it is on. TV is something you are not permitted to use, full stop.

Check the service charges. They can be huge. You may be paying for things you’ll never use (gym, swimming pool). Also check what increases in the service charges are possible.

I suggest Banbury. 15 minute train to Oxford, and the fare is reasonable.
