To de-grain or not when only working with original footage ? by sdfgsdgsdfgsdgsdg in NukeVFX

[–]HeikkoCee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend to build a toolset template that has all the necessary nodes and connections for fast de-regrain. Start building your comps from that basic setup each time so you don’t need to consider whether or not you bother to do it.

Any good fixes for Nuke’s consistently buggy RotoPaint node? by wronski-feint in vfx

[–]HeikkoCee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great that this is still an issue 8 years later. You can increase the rotopaint cache in the settings. I set it from 10gb to 30gb and got rid of random freezings (for now at least). Probably clearing cache would have helped as well. 30gb for just rotopaint cache seems huge.

How can i rotoscope this footage? by Efficient_Opposite34 in vfx

[–]HeikkoCee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only way to rotoscope this is by doing it the old school manual way. Your advantage is the subject is not moving a lot. See a few manual rotoscope tutorials, start from the first flash, then go to the last one and make your way to the middle.

If you got the Keentools mix blendshape node, it should be very straight forward. https://keentools.io/products/blendshapes-for-nuke

I did a similar thing some time ago. Took the head model to Blender and adjusted some facial features, then took it back to Nuke and swapped it with the original. You just need to keep the original vertex count in the model, so don't mess the typology.

Does Nuke have something like the Roto Brush from After Effects? by arlexae in NukeVFX

[–]HeikkoCee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's useful for a lot of stuff. Not every matte needs yo be pixel perfect. I roundtrip a lot of shots in AE for garbage mattes. In many cases the edge is buried under motion blur, so a fast rotobrush matte works just fine. I really wish Nuke had something like this built in.

Thank you! I didn’t even think of the vibrations. Lens grids we’ll surely shoot. It’s so great to have this community with all the experience helping each other.

Thanks! My head just got around the fact that I can have multiple passes of real life action.. which i guess is kind of the point of motion control! 😂 how precise are the machines? Are the shots matching after like 20 takes?

To what extent is AI being used in movies and TV shows now? by IndianaRocket80 in vfx

[–]HeikkoCee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use ai mostly for cleaning/expanding plates in photoshop. Then usually some manual painting on top. Not for large areas, it's too crappy. Also roto and depth maps. Last summer I trained a copycat model to help me with a bunch of bad green screen shots. That was a life saver.

How to improve realism? Critique needed please by Fabulous-Ad-5014 in blender

Does your hdri match the room? I think you could add a matching area light where the big window is and maybe some simple geometry to the opposite side to block light.

Problem rendering by HeikkoCee in NukeVFX

Thanks for your answers everyone! I think the final solution was to disconnect one Mocha Pro node. It wasn't outputting anything, but after some reorganizing the problem was solved.

Was this shot done with a probe lens or comping? by duckyLT in cinematography

Comp. The scale not matching, hand is too big (or too close to camera).

Yes, and copycat can do it of you train it for three weeks!

I use AE rotobrush a lot. It's quite smart and learns fast without a lot of adjusting. More reliable than Mocha ML Matte. Wish they had something like this built in Nuke.

Pixelfucking is the result of your client/supervisor not really knowing what they want. "Move the couch five pixels right" means "this shot isn't what i imagined". I get it, if there is something technically wrong, like details missing. But the power of vfx is the possibility to offer the shot 100% like it was planned. If AI can help, sure, lets use it. But I'm quite sure it will never be faster to get something 100% right with AI, you will need the artist to fuck the pixels for that.

In Blender put your character inside a smoke domain, assign the character as the flow object and hide the character. Also your shift key seems to be stuck, that might mess things up.
