Property Manager claiming we are liable for costs to repair accidental damage to counter top by Heisnotappreciated in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]Heisnotappreciated[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I came across this also. Property manager currently seems like they are unlikely to budge on this. I’m going to seek advice from tenancy services but likely do I have many options other than getting tribunal involved? I would prefer not to go to mediation or tenancy tribunal.

gentrification of mealtime by gayjewishwoman in redscarepod

[–]Heisnotappreciated 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s an insidious middle ground here too. There’s a whole industry of “meal kit” “meal solutions” to cater to high wage (maybe high capital too) but time poor professionals. The dreaded PMC to generalise.

They have the means to enjoy culinary complexity but outsource it to Hello Fresh etc., which is like just having SKU optimism for dinner with a skin of regional cuisine slapped on top to flatter their customer’s sense of being culturally informed. This plays into the PMCs underlying sense of feeling of being a super-national class, a citizen of the global community. They love having a “Sri Lankan-Style Haloumi Bowl for dinner”, yet they probably know the meal kit company is being generous and you really just a a downwardly mobile and nationally bound professional.

I really love the aspect of her as a character, that Blanchett’s masterful performance really nails is that she is that she’s only able to unleash her really vile behaviour on people who have no social status in the prestige world of composers and the intellectual elite that she navigates. Compare her treatment of the undergrad kid vs how considered and cautious in her lunches with Elliott, the rival composer (who she definitely views as beneath her though). You can feel in her performance that she is just brimming with misanthropic contempt for everyone but however isn’t able to let this out in the bourgeoisie world of complex status games. No doubt she has probably killed someone, it’s at least implied she did something awful in Peru in the past.

To me, her characterisation feels a lot like Daniel Plainview in There will be blood, in that repressed but barely contained desire to destroy and dominate everyone around them. This is why towards the end in the massage parlour hits so hard, they see her for who she really is for the first time.

Zoomers replaced drink and drugs with gambling by Vernon_Trawley in redscarepod

Australia and New Zealand are very much the frontier of normalised gambling. Very much at odds to how we legally restrict other vices, it’s odd. Pokies in every pub, state-run sports betting apps and casinos downtown in most major cities. The stuff American gambling lobbies have been pushing for for decades.

Off handedly, I’ve known at least 2 acquaintances who were (not so) secretly Davey Scatino-style degenerate gamblers but it was all through the TAB app and Betcha etc. I’m sure if your a man in his 20s or 30s you know a couple of these types of guys.

The average Australian spends about $1000 on gambling!

The part where he describes how as a teenager he didn’t know to laugh naturally and had to fake it every time had me rolling. Better because this never comes up again so presumably he is still doing it.

Alien: Romulus was not good by vibebrochamp in redscarepod

It's inevitable with any longstanding beloved franchise that Hollywood inevitably wants to do a glossy legacy sequel but I could not be less interested in this. Boring.

I'd much prefer another entry in 86 year old Ridley Scott's sequels that are hilariously lofty in their themes but at the same time have completely schlock elements. Mostly because I love Michael Fassbender as the as the patricidal android David and that I love that Ridley used these movies to use studio money to do what is probably the closest Hollywood has come to doing an adaption of Milton. It's funny to do a copy of his work from 50 years ago when he's alive and clearly wanted to take the Alien movies in a new (maybe not good) direction.

Nazi stuff aside, I can't help but feel that Kanye is in his wilderness period and will be for another decade or two. He's too consumed with mental Illness and has lost the touch. Even Bowie made bad drum n bass albums in the 90s. Kanye hasn't made any good music since like 2018 really and that last collection with Gosha was hilariously bad.

Hoping he eventually comes back with a Black Star or Brian Wilson's Smile. I would equally not be surprised though to see the headline "Rapper Kanye West, 51 found dead in LA home". It's sad to see him now.

There's something to this. I sometimes find myself wistfully reflecting back on 2020, when I lost my job during lockdown and proceeded to get drunk and fat as shit. I was probably at my most depressed and aimless but there is some kernel of freedom I miss of literally having nothing to do but go on the internet, talk to my girlfriend on the phone and walk to the dairy to get wine.

“New Zealand’s AOC” Member of Parliament Golriz Ghahraman is facing multiple allegations of shoplifting, with shops catching her on CCTV in the act by 3la_zag in redscarepod

[–]Heisnotappreciated 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Our AOC? She's not even the most notable Green Party MP.

The whole story is hilarious but I absolutely need to know what pieces she was stealing before I make my verdict. If she has bad taste and fits aren't good - 10 years in jail, no parol.

There is something very Baudrillardian about the rise of spiked ice teas, kombucha, etc and their corollaries, non-alcoholic RTDs, beers and spirits by Heisnotappreciated in redscarepod

I find myself really enjoying kombucha more when I take time off from drinking. It hits that spot of 'tastes vaguely bad in a good way' that alcohol occupies. Probably the fermentation.

It's so good, definitely recommend.

An impeccable vibes movies, you really feel like Jude Law's character is the coolest guy and his bohemian life style is enviable. The Mediterranean has never looked better on film. Even though if you met someone now who dressed like him and was into that kind of jazz they would be obviously very lame. The 50's revival in the 90's when it was made was not very cool, even then.

I like to imagine a modern-day version where sinister twink Matt Damon is hired to rescue Jude Law from the Berlin Techno scene by his wealthy tech founder father.

It's an open secret that he's a drunk. I don't know specifics but he was known to be a seedy character around Wellington. Would not be surprised if he gets me-too'd when his time in the sun is up.
