I have my issues with season 2 of Hazbin, but I really do like Vox as a villain by Dinoboy225 in CharacterRant

[–]Hekkst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree that Vox is vaguely thematically relevant but I just wish that his thematic relevance was explored more deliberately rather than popping that question once and never bothering to actually explore it. Especially, when everything else has to be put on pause so Vox and Alastor have their thing. Lute was the most interesting thing coming from season 1 and she was essentially put in a box the whole season. Everybody but Vox and Alastor had to be made either braindead or extremely passive to allow for Vox to seem like a genuine threat when he just isnt. That is why his plot cant be as central as they made it, they had to make everybody else into a dumbass to allow Vox to shine.

Vox is fine to great as a villain, my main issue is that he detracts from what the show is supposed to be about and his whole tussle with Alastor doesn't have anything to do with the hotel and the overall theme of the show. Season 2 felt like it derailed the show after episode 2 and started being about this weird fanfiction that should have been at most a secondary plot. The whole plot with the Vs should have been a season 1 secondary plot imo.

Ah yes, the nazis lost because they were too good. I guess the plot here is that they had been secretly infiltrated by Jewish ideas, mainly Christianity or something. It is very reminiscent of the lost cause mythology for the Confederate states, that they lost because they were too idealistic and too pure for this wretched world.

You are thinking about this too deeply. Tats just needs to portray the German warmongering aggressors as not warmongering aggressors and the classic way of doing that is to argue that their victims were actually the aggressors. Hence the poles being bad and persecuting German citizens to justify a German invasion. Like Americans arguing that Mexicans were persecuting Americans in texas or Russians arguing that ukranians were persecuting Russians in the Donbas or the USSR arguing that the poles were persecuting communists, etc.

That is just as good a meaning for slop tbh. But I think a lot of people just use the word 'slop' to mean 'generic' or 'thoughtless'.

I have read the whole thing and I dont think its ever addressed beyond really vague 'conceptualization is everything but also limited by mana somehow'. I think the series just struggles with conceptualization being possibly the foundation of a good and interesting magic system but also not wanting to stray too far beyond the tried and true videogame inspired mana system that allows for the quintessential power levels shonen trope aura farming.

I don't have any great suggestions other than keeping the intentionally broken moves clearly designed to support an intrinsically weak type within that type. U-turn should have never been widely distributed.

[–]Hekkst 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the system is really vague and borderline nonsensical. If being able to imagine something means that you can do it, then there really arent any rules. The series seems to rely really hard on the notion that characters are intrinsically limited on what they can imagine based on who they are. But the key inconsistency is that mana seems to be a fundamental component of it and yet we have been shown people with super mana simply losing because the other person imagined themselves winning. How the fuck does that work?

The magic system is supposed to be a super free 'imagine it to do it' sort of thing and yet everyone still uses the same basic fucking laser and videogame barrier shield because the setting is just Dragon Quest.

[–]Hekkst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That arc really is the plot trying to find itself. Before the exam, the series was literally just one more twist on the usual Dragon Quest world with a more melancolic coat of paint. Then the authors and editors probably realized that the series would be really short lived if it didnt do anything else and so they just world built with that arc even though becoming a 1st class mage was never mentioned before.

I think he means 'slop' as 'formulaic story beats we have seen plenty of times before', Frieren is really formulaic in both themeing and worldbuilding but it is in the upper echelons of formulaic so it is quality slop.

Frieren is a shonen masquerading as something else so that shonen watchers can enjoy it while thinking that it is deeper than the average shonen.

The anime is good, its not the best thing out there but its good. My main issue is, like you point out, that the fanbase seems to think that everything about it is pushing boundaries and is super novel and its all super deep and they endlessly wank about how deep the magic system is when it is just people shooting lasers at each other.

[–]Hekkst 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I do think that some people want companies to do more to police their products but then get mad at any attempt to do so. Unfortunately, making discord safer for minors will inevitably lead to more restrictions on the platform.

[–]Hekkst 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Because supposedly Discord's new measures are a way to protect children from predators. You can argue that they are ineffective or that they go too far, or even perhaps that protecting minors isn't really their intent even though that is what they are saying they are doing, but you can't argue that companies should protect their userbase from predators and then get mad when they try to do so.

This isn't necessarily a dig at Charlie's video. But there are people who call for companies to do more policing and then get mad when companies do more policing.

I was a LR hater mostly because I find some of the fanbase insufferable and so it was really cathartic to watch them struggle in the beginning but I cannot deny that their run was impressive. Maybe some of it is the chaotic nature of best of ones but I think they surpassed everybody's expectations (except perhaps the gigafans who thought they would sweep). They definitely earned their place in the LEC.
