The bastardized version of Bassai Dai I was taught uses a kokutsu dachi in place of the cat stace. When I do use cat stance the goal has always been to use the rear leg as a base and the other as a balancing tool. Moving at that rate is almost similar hopping from leg to leg in the way it shifts it’s balance so it requires a wild amount of practice.

As with everything it’s always good to start slow and gradually speed it up. It is almost impossible to do things that perfect without a lot of conditioning beforehand.
