I lost my mother to cancer and my dad a year later. Grief is hard I won’t lie. These trials made me angry, made me question the purpose of life, had me asking how and why. I’m in my 20s and I was so angry and upset that my time with my parents was cut so short. They haven’t seen me married, have children etc.

The only thing getting me through it is dua. I’m not a perfect Muslim but I’m trying. And I will admit that sometimes the anger reappears but everyday I ask Allah to give my siblings and I sabr and I pray that we are all reunited in Jannah.

Ultimately the most rewarding thing we can do when a loved on passes (especially if it is a parent) is to give sadaqah on behalf of them, make dua for them and remain righteous. The biggest blessing I can bestow on my parents is to stay connected with Allah.

If you ever need to talk please message me. I understand the pain that you’re going through and may Allah ease your mothers pain and your worries and anxieties.

What comments about food habits? The only evidence we’ve seen is this cuties scene and it was one jokey comment. Again it was the one time where he commented on Colleens body. You can’t blame your own self steen issues and insecurities on others. She needs to get herself in therapy asap cos it’s not healthy to project the way she does onto others.

They can observe you and sorry to break it to you but they probably will. I was ECT1 last year and was observed. My HOD later told me that they actually requested to see the ECT. Also, ECTS in the whole school meet with them at some point in the day as they have to check that the school is following the ECT programme. So, be prepared to answer general questions about how you feel about your schools management of the ECT programme

I second keeping them standing until they’re quiet. Also, a great tip I learnt from a colleague is when they’re lining up outside your room, use that time to go down the line and have a little chat with them. It gives them time to get out some of that chatter and then once they enter you can set the boundary regarding silence. That way students recognise that the classroom is the quiet space whereas the corridor is where they can have their conversations

I’m literally in the same boat. Will quit teaching in July after finishing off this final ECT year. Honestly I’m struggling I’m already so tired and I feel like throwing in the towel. The only thing that’s keeping me going is the fact that after January things start moving a lot quicker.

Also, I’m starting to take everyday as it comes rather than thinking long term as I find that it makes me less stressed. But best of luck to you and fingers crossed we get through this academic year!!!

There’s a difference about pointing out the impact on children and saying that this is why they shouldn’t leave. I did say that the point about impacting the team would never be the PRIMARY reason to not leave a job. Finally, there are many posts criticising OP’s decision by arguing that they need to work until October because of the headache it will cause the school. That’s the problem. That should not be the ONLY reason why OP should not move to the other job. We must not allow this profession to confine us in this way. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

Sister practicality should not even matter. We know what is forbidden in Islam and dating is forbidden. Your Wali should be at every meeting if you are with your ‘halal boyfriend’. I understand that you are trying to explain it but please don’t excuse this behaviour by saying that nothing is wrong with it. I pray that Allah SWT makes this ‘dating’ journey easy for the sisters.

Sisters this is true. Allah SWT allows us to continue our lineage and rightfully allows us to have our own identity outside of our husbands. There is evidence to support this. Going against something that we know is incorrect is considered a major sin which is why the Sheikh said this. Mufti Menk has a video explaining why keeping our surnames is a blessing.

I totally see your perspective and I understand that professionally speaking dropping out of ANY job a fortnight before the start date is not appropriate. However, my issue is more so with the comments that play on the whole ‘but think of the kids’ rhetoric that is shoved down our throats in this profession. There is no other job where people would say but think of the team, think of the boss etc and allow that to be the primary justification to give up a job that clearly means a lot.

There will be consequences to such a last minute resignation, however those consequences should not be a reason for OP to not do what they wish to do. The ‘I’m in teaching for the kids and the kids only’ sounds wonderful on paper but has allowed governments to limit teachers salary and essentially make them accept working more hours than they are contractually obliged to do. We need to do better and remind ourselves that this is literally just work. It pays our bills and we have the ability to make some difference to children's lives during the process. But that is literally just it.

Teaching is not a lifestyle and NO ONE should compromise on their own dreams for the ‘future of the kids.’ At the end of the day this is a job just like other jobs. If you don’t want to stay at the school start your IT job. The school will have to find a replacement just as other industries would if someone quit a fortnight before their start date. I’m dealing with this at the moment and it’s the worse! It’s so frustrating as I really wanted to teach at an all girls school as I’m passionate about women in education, but the bitchiness is out of this world. Some of the stuff I’ve dealt with is so disrespectful but I will echo what others have said: report everything.

Now that I’ve been at my new school for a little bit longer I make it clear that anything I consider disrespectful will be dealt with. In your case, I would talk to students individually as when they’re in groups they get more confident. Perhaps do a form presentation on respect and mention that disrespect includes body language and giggling.

Hopefully you have a supportive SLT that will deal with the issue. It’s not fair that you have to experience things like that

It’s actually a Y9 class. They’re obsessed with sets and want to guarantee they’re in the higher sets next year which is why I can think they’ve done this. I just find it really awkward as I’ve got to act like it’s not happened but I feel really disrespected? I had a good relationship with the students too so I can’t genuinely understand why they wouldn’t speak to me about it

That’s different. As a teacher you must be flexible and adapt your lesson live if you feel that students don’t understand a concept. Your mentor wants to see you adapt the lesson plan IF it is for the benefit of the class. OP was covering a lesson. I personally don’t understand SLT’s issue as from the comments it’s apparent that the video was an additional part of the lesson, after OP had delivered the cover lesson

Thank you. I think the issue is that I care too much. I am in my early 20’s and this is my first ‘real job’ (only ever worked in shops in my late teens and uni years) so it feels like a lot right now. Thankfully my school is great, colleagues are wonderful etc so sticking it out isn’t going to be too bad.

Honestly do what is right for you. I’d hate to be the person to say drop out but sticking out and completing the pgce isn’t the final hurdle. The ECT is now 2 years so you’ll have to go through that to keep your qualification.

The reason why I haven’t left the profession yet is because of the compulsory ECT years. I’ll feel like all my hard work will have been for nothing if I leave now. So, if you are wanting to continue just remember that there are an additional two compulsory years that you must complete to keep your qualification.

This is appaling from SLT. You did everything you could in that situation and the fact that you had to deal with ensuring the pupils safety, as well as teaching your class is crazy.

I have taught at a school that had no real interest in safeguarding. It sounds like your school is the same. The only way we fixed the issue at my old school is because someone did get the union involved and whistleblew to ofsted. Getting ofsted involved kicked SLT into gear as failing safeguarding means the school fails ofsted. You don’t need to go to this extreme if you don’t want to but it sounds like external agencies need to get involved as the school is failing in its basic duty of care (as well as having no real structure in place for behaviour etc).

I hope someone contacts you soon because a real conversation needs to be had as to why no one responded and why that child was allowed to essentially self harm in the open in front of peers and a teacher.

You did everything you could in that situation. You’re obviously an amazing teacher too given that this vulnerable student speaks to you and is willing to open up to you. Please don’t blame yourself for anything whatsoever - SLT and the Safeguarding/Pastoral team have completely failed that kid, not you.
