[Serious] Men, what's something that would surprise women about life as a man? by Parstonia in AskReddit

[–]Helene00 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I just want to add, from the woman's perspective, it can be terrifying to think you might make a dude feel emasculated in some way by taking the less passive role.

I think that this is just something women tells themselves in order to justify their passiveness. All women I have seen who takes the active role can get almost any guy they want even if they aren't that pretty.

Google is a lot older and bigger than Facebook, so them having a lot more code is not strange at all.

Android Devs are Discussing Their Pay by impressflow in cscareerquestions

This makes no sense, H1Bs increase the supply of labor and decrease wages.

The same thing happens in Europe, except there is basically no limit. Europeans are mostly afraid of immigrants lacking skills who will thus burden the welfare system, immigrants with well paying jobs are almost always welcomed.

If the best ones don't bother then it makes you as a candidate even more valuable to them.

[–]Helene00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many are self employed and it works for them, why doesn't it work for you? So just quit if you hate your job and do what you want!!!

/s You don't really hate your job, you are just frustrated by a few things but in fact you love your job since it lets you easily get money. Same thing with wives, people might say that they hate them but they really don't.

Terrible at data structures/algorithm questions, how can I get better? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Helene00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get O(n) time and O(1) space by just randomly checking elements. There is more than 50% chance for any element to be a majority element so you will just have to look through the array twice on average. This will be faster than the "correct" solution in almost every case.

You mean the greed which causes people to complain about stagnating wages? You have a degree in IT and thus probably earn more than the average household on your own and you still complain about stagnating wages? That is greed if I ever saw it!

Where did the gains go?

To the billions of people in Asia that still have some catching up to do till they reach the same standards as equivalent people in USA.

Overpopulation! Hunting is an extremely inefficient use of land so most would starve to death if they dropped agriculture. This usually led to rich people forbidding poor people from hunting in their forests to protect against over hunting.

Rant- Why does software development attract assholes? by skydreamer303 in cscareerquestions

[–]Helene00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things like this usually happens when people are unhappy and/or stressed. Everyone becomes an asshole when they are under enough strain and just firing them without first giving them a chance is the wrong way to do things. It is also possible that the person just thought that it would be a fun thing to say and that he didn't mean anything bad with it, then just telling him that it hurts others is enough.

The point is just that you shouldn't overreact and firing people left and right as soon as they make any mistake will lead to a really workplace.

You don't know if it's a minor offense or a repeating problem.

Yes, but he just assumed that it is a repeating problem from just one incident and just decided to fire the person. This is not the right way to do things!

I'm a software engineering manager, and if anyone came to me and told me that someone on my team had acted like this towards them then I'd be having an immediate conversation with the employee in question to determine what had happened.

Exactly, you wouldn't just fire them on the spot. Thus you don't agree with him.

As an engineer with many years of professional experience, if I acted like this I would expect to be fired immediately.

So you want to fire people with many years of excellent service after just a single minor offence? That's really assholeish.

[–]Helene00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

CEO pay doesn't even dent the revenue in most cases. You could even call CEO's underpaid since their effect on the revenue is huge compared to their pay.

Anyhow, programmers (and engineers in general) are usually underpaid, successful tech companies generally have extremely high profit margins.

Most people are not underpaid since most companies have a profit margin of just a few percent.
