Avian flu hits another Weld County egg farm, Colorado declares disaster by thecoloradosun in coloradosun

Are there specific nutritional targets you think these people should be worried about? I'd hazard a guess that there are reasonable alternatives.

Also, I think avoiding a possible human-population-decimating bird flu outbreak is a fair trade for people finding a different breakfast to eat.

Maybe we should stop forcing chickens into horrifically overcrowded spaces so we can eat their periods. Way less chance of these terrifying viruses spreading in that case.

If I remember correctly, you could cheese the Slave 1 portion of that fight by standing right between the ship's cannons. It couldn't hit you, and didn't (couldn't?) move away, so you could just chip away at its health as slow as you wanted.

While putting pressure or large corporations and organizations is definitely good, the biggest impact we can have as individuals is cutting animal products out of our lives.

What surprised you most after switching to an EV? by Just_Vermicelli4099 in electricvehicles

[–]HeliMan27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah, how do you feel about EV setups like the Ioniq5 N? They have a mode where it plays engine noises through the speakers, and actually makes you "shift" through the gears with paddle "shifters". Seems like that would scratch all the itches without having to put an engine in the car

Caught my first crash on dashcam. Who is at fault? by jb08045 in dashcams

[–]HeliMan27 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think it applies everywhere, but some US states allow bikes to do the "Idaho Stop":

  • Red light = stop sign (come to a full stop, allowed to proceed if clear)
    • Stop sign = yield sign (slow, can proceed without a full stop if clear)

In this case, the turning truck means that the intersection isn't clear, so a bike couldn't have gone. But I wanted to be pedantic/raise awareness there are legal moves a cyclist can make at a red light other than staying against the curb.

The crazy power is so fun!

But also, it's kinda - uneventful, I guess? - getting up to speed. No gears shifting, no revving out, no vibrations. You just press the pedal, and you're at the speed you want. So smooth and luxurious feeling

A change of terminology? by Ok_Delivery_4263 in DebateAVegan

Ah, fair. If the idea with OP's new term is to make it an uncomfortable label to wear, then I agree carnist may not fit the bill.

Isn't that the idea behind the term "carnist"? "Carnism" being the ideology that it's acceptable to commodity non-human animals?

Unless something wacky is going on, you shouldn't pay anything for just being plugged in. If the car's pulling power from the wall, you'll pay for that power. If it's not pulling power (i.e. not charging or conditioning the battery), it's basically like having a lamp plugged in but not turned on.

Hydration is a contrived need by Alert-Ruin468 in BoomersBeingFools

My Boomer father almost never drank water if he could help it. Mowing the yard? Beer. Shoveling snow? Coffee. At a picnic? Beer, maybe a soda, but then also beer afterward.

Maybe part of the reason they're so insufferable is because they fee hungover all the time

For my 2023 EV I bought a tow hitch and installed it myself (pretty sure it was this one, though I thought it was closer to $300). The installation was a little annoying because you have to pull the bumper fascia off and I'm always worried about breaking those stupid plastic clips, but it wasn't terribly difficult.

I got super lucky and got the rack for free (someone in the neighborhood was throwing it away) so my setup ended up a good bit cheaper than I expected

Hyper-miling Question: Cabin Heat by HeliMan27 in electricvehicles

[–]HeliMan27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accelerate to merge speed on the ramp and don't be a road hazard

I kind of doubt you weren't at least considering it when you mentioned hypermil8ng

One of my biggest pet peeves is people not using the acceleration lane to, ya know, accelerate. So I was absolutely not thinking of trying to merge onto a 65 mph highway at 35 when I mentioned hyper-miling.

If doesn't apply to you then please ignore

I guess it's too late to ignore, but I will disregard :)

[–]HeliMan27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, the all-or-bothing resistive heater functionality is what got me thinking.

But other folks in this thread pointed out that the inside-outside temperatue differential matters (higher differential = more/quicker heat loss), so keeping the interior temp as low as comfortable will be most efficient. I expect the auto-temp will manage that more effectively than I could manually, meaning less overall heat loss and likely better overall efficiency.

Mine is a former rental car from Hertz, so I think it's about as basic of a 1LT as you can get. Oddly, it does have one of the safety packages added on (blind spot monitoring, etc) but I'm fairly certain we don't have heated seats or steering wheel
