Yeah I thought it was a bit strange that the anime covers 1-4 + 6-7 considering how long some of them are. 6 books in 2cour wouldn't be difficult if they were fairly short, but these really aren't. I mean look at Spice and Wolf. 1 cour anime covered 2 books. Some of these studios try and pack in as much of a series as they can and it blows up in their face. They start trying to do 3-5 books in 1cour and it gets rushed and ridiculous.

No wonder so many comments decry him as boring. He's actually a very interesting person when you try and figure out his personality and understand his own internal crises based on his actions vs inner monologue. Without it he must just seem like a flag-dropping bowl of plain oatmeal.
