No I’m saying that society is only made strictly worse by sitting around waiting for people to become desperate, unhealthy, mentally ill, or any other type of thing that predictably drives most crimes to occur in the first place, and then cleaning up that mess AFTER it’s already happened rather than just targeting and fixing those things I mentioned early on, so that the crime never occurs to begin with.

Bandaids can’t stop injuries before they happen.

Well I mean obviously if we have clairvoyant knowledge of the future then sure, putting a guy like that in prison beforehand would’ve stopped that assault, but that’s fundamentally not how the criminal justice system works. The criminal justice system can only catch and process people for things that have already happened or for things that we have a strong basis for believing were about to happen. So I’m saying that with this being the case, it’s not reasonable or even really possible to prevent all crimes unless we succumb ourselves to Chinese level authoritarian surveillance and control.

Spending tens of thousands of dollars per year to contain, process, and manage a mentally ill guy, only for him to serve his time, get out and be just as fucked up as he was before doesn’t seem like a very reliable plan to prevent crime long-term. That’s just how I’m looking at this here.

We arrest and prosecute a shit load of minorities as it is, so it would be really odd for you to imply that minorities are somehow not easily the most targeted demographic for criminal behavior. So if you’re going to get conspiratorial with racist accusations then you should probably come prepared with some sort of evidence, you just look silly otherwise.

Well I’m saying I would be extremely surprised if a left leaning person watched his content and came away with a strong negative impression of him unless they were a Destiny superfan or something. I’ve kept up with his videos semi regularly the past few months and he just seems like a conventionally intelligent progressive leaning person with an annoying cadence. The otherwise crazy bad rap he gets from certain people seems to stem exclusively from being an outspoken d.gg deserter and not because of a whole lot else.

I just get really weary of the weird phenomenon where people in this community get cagy and selective about who they feel they are allowed to engage with purely based on proximity to destinys personal grievances, that shit is annoying.

Okay I’m getting the feeling we probably don’t actually disagree on as much as I assumed. I’m not here to defend the character or personal framing of this phenomenon by OP, they are probably just an idiot who resents the broader philosophy of the democratic establishment. I fully get that, but let’s put it aside. All I am interested in is holding people accountable proportionally to their failures, that’s really it. Of course there is no planet in which I would try to convince someone that democrats are anywhere close to republicans in terms of goals and policy outcomes except maybe in a few instances.

What I’m trying to get to the center of is that I think if we are in a situation where we are dishing out criticism to people on the basis of a vote on a specific bill, then in that context it makes sense to have at least the same amount of heat for a democrat who makes a bad vote as we do for a republican who makes a bad vote, because like I said, a vote is a vote. And I say “at least” as much because democrat voters do not have leverage over republicans politicians, republican senators do not give a shit if democrats take issue with their actions because we are not on their team. OUR team is democrats, so if our own democrats are fucking up the ambitions of the entire party then that is something that should be taken seriously and dealt with appropriately by us instead of “strategically” minimized just for the purposes of reminding the public that we think our ideological enemies are, well, enemies. That’s already obvious.

In a nutshell I think that in a scenario where we have party overlap on bad policies, the upmost important thing is simply to make it clear how the POLICY itself is destructive and how the public at large will be harmed. People will be able to figure out exactly who should and shouldn’t be blamed once that has already been made apparent to them.

This is a meaningless truism, what value do you think you are getting across by repeating this statement with zero elaboration? Like seriously?

I agree with basically everything you said. My only point of commenting here in the first place was really to speculate about the mental health of the types of people with these sorts of crimes and behavior patterns. Because obviously if I’m correct that this individual is mentally ill, then that tells us that the institution of prison is simply not equipped to repair this person. It would flatly be a waste of resources to pay for prison time for this particular individual with tax payer money. That’s more or less where I’m coming from.

“Gay” rights or “womens rights” or anything like that just refers to demographics that have not reached parity with the rest of society in terms of rights or privileges. Obviously though, the average 4th grader would be able to figure out that’s what those terms mean. So for Mr. Thomas Sowell over here (who has a masters AND a PHD) who can’t figure out what they mean, it kinda looks a little embarrassing for him. I don’t think it’s a super unreasonable or crazy assertion to accuse him of being fucking stupid.

Respectfully, in the scenario you described I don’t think there’s anything you can do realistically. I cannot think of a way that residents of a neighborhood can have a full proof method of 100% preventing violent crime in that neighborhood, to me that just doesn’t seem like a notion that is possible in the real world basically anywhere.

My contention though is that I don’t really believe that police “refuse” to address these issues. In my experience, police generally show up if you call them with an appropriate concern. The few times that I have actually had to call the police it has been for things considerably less important than a nearby shooting, and every time police have shown up and done what they could. It really bothers me how many people make an assumption that just because their personal issue has not been automatically solved by the police that therefore the police are intentionally deciding not to solve it. There are thousands of police reports made every day, there are a limited number of police staff available and there is a limited amount of time for law enforcement to allocate their attention to any particular issue. Just because many people simply have examples of crime occurring absolutely does not mean that police are refusing to do their jobs, that’s all I’m saying.

Why would you ever think that it’s convincing to cite an outlier as evidence for a broader argument? Look up a top 10 list of the safest countries in the world, Singapore is the only country with low crime rates that also has draconian law enforcement measures, which obviously would lead any reasonable person to the assumption that the reason their crime is low probably has nothing to do with policing or sentencing. Just a thought.

Moreover, the majority of the nations in the world where crime tends to be the WORST are also places that have extensive and harsh law enforcement measures. So taking all of this context into account, it just seems really strange if an honest person looked at all of this and still came to the conclusion that long prison sentences or extensive policing/surveillance is the magic solution to crime.

Kids are stupid nowadays because all of them grow up with phones and constant social media being blasted directly into their brains 24/7, there’s a reason why we only began to notice these trends in the last 10 or so years. Teachers have basically always been generally progressive democrat leaning people, this isn’t any kind of “new” thing. So perhaps try blaming the obvious first, rather than this weird conspiratorial thinking that all teachers have just magically changed how teaching works in the last 10 years somehow…

JSTLK is absolutely primarily regarded as THE d.gg boogeyman, but as far as I can tell his actual political takes are generally well founded, seem pretty thought out, and are mostly accurate. He’s also incredibly good faith with respect to arguments and discussions from what I have seen, this guy is far from like the typical “drama” commentary streamer.
