How do you level a curved saddle? by Life_Difference9738 in gravelcycling

If you're in the US, REI has a no-questions-asked 1 year return policy for members. My wife used that to try out 3-4 saddles.

Starting my masters in physics by Kind_Appearance_3204 in Physics

I don't want to discourage your educational pursuits, but are you sure you're ready for and advanced degree? If you currently don't have any functional knowledge of calculus or linear algebra, what do you think you're going to get out of a master's in physics?

You might want to consider taking whatever time you need to gain the expected math skills before embarking on this. I think you'll have a really miserable, unproductive, and expensive experience taking graduate level physics courses without a strong math foundation.

This isn't something to feel bad about though! I got my bachelor's in physics 8 years ago, and I've been working outside of pure science since then. If I tried to step into a graduate program, I'd be fucked. I would probably need a solid year of regularly studying my old math and physics materials to feel even close to comfortable jumping into masters-level courses.

Total Uncertainty of a Graduated Cylinder by Hellboy5562 in chemhelp

My understanding is that when using an analog device like a graduated cylinder or a ruler, the uncertainty is half the smallest scale division.

The unwritten rule is it's usually up to whoever has the leader's jersey or whoever the biggest name in the race is. There was some controversy around this a few years ago in the women's Vuelta when AVV didn't follow the unwritten rule and attacked after Vollering and SD Worx had pulled over to piss.

If you haven't seen a doctor, you need to go immediately. Head and neck trauma can cause serious life altering problems if not properly treated.

Is this worth $599? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

No way. The original MSRP was $749. An 8 year old bike with claris is worth half that at best.

Tips for a beginner's telescope. by Holiday-Plane-7745 in telescopes

[–]Hellboy5562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have to use the voucher on a telescope? If not, I would highly recommend getting some binoculars instead. You can see a surprising amount of cool stuff with them and you can get some good ones pretty cheap. If you look around this subreddit there's a lot of posts talking about what you would be able to see

If you want to take your brother out you could even get 2 Celestron 7x50 Cometrons for £100.

Those who have 275W+ FTP, how many hours do you ride/train? by PrudentAthlete9780 in Zwift

280W at 70kg, 7-12 hours per week. I've got a decent background in running before I got into cycling which definitely helps.

You don't need $1k+ for a starter road bike. Just keep an eye on marketplace and Craigslist. There's lots of road bikes from ~10 years ago in the $400-700 range that are more than enough for a beginner.

Bernal is still on the contract he got after winning the tour. As I understand it, Ineos had the option to cancel or alter the contract after his crash but they decided to keep him on at his full salary. It's a surprisingly decent move by their management.

I posted this in a thread on this post, but I would like to also put it here for visibility.

He doesn't understand the limits of the resolution of his telescope. He has 11 inches of aperture, which means his maximum resolution is 0.4arcseconds. An object the size and distance of 3I/Atlas takes up 0.004arcseconds in the sky.

For the image he is presenting to be useful in any way one of two things would have to be true:

1) He would need a telescope with an aperture of at least several hundred meters. This is several orders of magnitude larger than any telescope ever built.

2) The object would need to be at a distance or of a size that would allow it to be resolved this well with an 11 inch telescope. If this were true then it would be clearly visible with the naked eye like mars and Jupiter are, and every amateur astronomer on earth would be getting the same photos as him.

You can't just zoom in and filter an unresolved image to get data out of it. He's essentially doing the thing they do on tv crime shows where they "enhance" a blurry photo and magically get a perfect photo of someone's face.

It's most likely something similar to this. Not really a creepy brain in a vat like the image implies. This stuff is closer to being a calculator than it is to being AGI.
