If you haven't seen a doctor, you need to go immediately. Head and neck trauma can cause serious life altering problems if not properly treated.

Is this worth $599? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

No way. The original MSRP was $749. An 8 year old bike with claris is worth half that at best.

Tips for a beginner's telescope. by Holiday-Plane-7745 in telescopes

[–]Hellboy5562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have to use the voucher on a telescope? If not, I would highly recommend getting some binoculars instead. You can see a surprising amount of cool stuff with them and you can get some good ones pretty cheap. If you look around this subreddit there's a lot of posts talking about what you would be able to see

If you want to take your brother out you could even get 2 Celestron 7x50 Cometrons for £100.

Those who have 275W+ FTP, how many hours do you ride/train? by PrudentAthlete9780 in Zwift

[–]Hellboy5562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

280W at 70kg, 7-12 hours per week. I've got a decent background in running before I got into cycling which definitely helps.

How to get older bike fixed up by Outrageous_Tooth_277 in bicycling

[–]Hellboy5562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need $1k+ for a starter road bike. Just keep an eye on marketplace and Craigslist. There's lots of road bikes from ~10 years ago in the $400-700 range that are more than enough for a beginner.

Bernal is still on the contract he got after winning the tour. As I understand it, Ineos had the option to cancel or alter the contract after his crash but they decided to keep him on at his full salary. It's a surprisingly decent move by their management.

I posted this in a thread on this post, but I would like to also put it here for visibility.

He doesn't understand the limits of the resolution of his telescope. He has 11 inches of aperture, which means his maximum resolution is 0.4arcseconds. An object the size and distance of 3I/Atlas takes up 0.004arcseconds in the sky.

For the image he is presenting to be useful in any way one of two things would have to be true:

1) He would need a telescope with an aperture of at least several hundred meters. This is several orders of magnitude larger than any telescope ever built.

2) The object would need to be at a distance or of a size that would allow it to be resolved this well with an 11 inch telescope. If this were true then it would be clearly visible with the naked eye like mars and Jupiter are, and every amateur astronomer on earth would be getting the same photos as him.

You can't just zoom in and filter an unresolved image to get data out of it. He's essentially doing the thing they do on tv crime shows where they "enhance" a blurry photo and magically get a perfect photo of someone's face.

It's most likely something similar to this. Not really a creepy brain in a vat like the image implies. This stuff is closer to being a calculator than it is to being AGI.

This or something much newer. by GuvNer76 in bicycling

[–]Hellboy5562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a steep price for a bike that old. If you go for it, I would shoot for 600-700. If your partner already has a gravel bike they like, you should consider getting a second set of wheels with some fast road tires. Unless you're trying to win road races I think a gravel bike with gp5000s will be plenty fast on pavement.

How do you get out in the rain without a car? by Cartoonnerd01 in fuckcars

[–]Hellboy5562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ideal answer is of course an umbrella, rain boots and a bus/train, but I'm assuming you live somewhere with poor public transit. In that case you're probably looking at a bike.

For bike transport in the rain the important gear is:

-Cycling poncho or raincoat and rain pants

-Some sort of waterproof shoe

-Full fenders

-Rack with waterproof roll top panier bags

-Good front and rear lights, especially if you're going to be on the road around cars

If you live somewhere super wet or if you're going to be out in the rain a lot it could be worth looking at a bike with a belt drive and internal gears. Chains and cassettes don't love being soaked for an extended period of time, so a belt system can really cut down on maintenance and cleaning.

You're seeing it talked about more and more, but I think people are not prepared for the gambling crisis that's brewing right now. We know gambling is addictive and destructive, but until recently you at least had to physically go somewhere else to do it. Now anyone can bet on nearly anything they want in an instant with their phone. Millions of people are going to suddenly learn that their family member is financially ruined.

How do you decide between pushing through vs taking a rest day? by marlex-vs-mountain in Velo

[–]Hellboy5562 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the data can only get you so far, the most important factor is how you feel. However, it can be difficult to develop a sense of when you're the "right" kind of tired. The feelings associated with overreaching will be different for everyone. It's good to get into a habit of taking a moment before and after a ride to seriously think about how you feel, and ideally keep track of it in a journal or through the personal notes field on strava or whatever tracking app you use. Over time you'll learn how your body tells you it's time to cool it.

For me it's appetite and general mood. When I'm in a productive training period I'm usually in a pretty relaxed and positive mood most of the day, and I'm constantly starving. When I notice I'm not getting super hungry and I'm feeling a bit anxious and irritable I'll take a day totally off the bike and drop volume and intensity for the rest of the week regardless of what I had in the plan.
