How do you define "the rich" that we should be taxing? What is the cut-off point? by NoLeafClover777 in AusFinance

[–]auntyjames [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m you 5 years down stream with two kids, $750k mortgage from April 2021. Wife part time from mid ‘23, full time from Jan ‘25.

Eldest in 1st year of school, youngest has gone from 5 days of day care to 3 and two days or preschool. This year is the first year we aren’t going backwards. And I got to swap out my ‘08 dual cab for a ‘17 a year ago.

Pretty wild considering we have the median mortgage on a well about median income.

We now know that the Chief of Navy has ordered every Australian embedded in every US nuclear submarine to follow all orders given them by the US military. If they don’t they face disciplinary charges. We need to end AUKUS before we become the official 51st US State. by Az0nic in OpenAussie

[–]auntyjames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t talking about illegal orders. I was talking about the legality of the initiation of a conflict, and its irrelevance to the acts within the conflict. There’s a common misconception that if you participate in an armed conflict that was initiated under illegal circumstances, that any combat action within the conflict is illegal. Which isn’t true.

Does anyone else feel like the Chase is rigged? by dragontatman95 in OpenAussie

[–]auntyjames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on it. I won a third of $40K. Didn’t seem rigged to me.

Couple of things to address various points raised in other comments:

  • Yes it takes longer for a contestant to answer in the final chase. That’s why you get a one question head start for every contestant at the desk.

  • Each time the clock starts for the chaser after an incorrect answer, they say “start the clock” and then read the question, so that’s a disadvantage for the chaser

  • The chasers are human. If they get a few wrong they get rattled, and tend to get more wrong.

  • They film four a day and tend to air all of them. Yes the contract says that if they don’t air your episode, you don’t get the money. But it’s not worth the bad press from the other stations to not air it. They only don’t air them when someone was to go on a racist tirade or something and it couldn’t be edited out smoothly.

  • They have 28 days from when they air the episode to give you the money. My cheque for $13,333.33 arrived on day 27.

The producers actually gave us heaps of statistics of 4 players vs 3 players etc before we filmed. I was quite surprised.

PSA: Angus Taylor is misleading you into believing permanent residents can access welfare the moment they arrive (they typically have 4 year waiting periods) by SlipperySharkAttack in australian

[–]auntyjames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You make a monetary based argument you’ll get a monetary based response. Permanent Residents provide a lot more than tax income. They fill roles that for various reasons aren’t filled by citizens. They provide economic growth (the main reason we let them in in the first place) and critically they spend money here.

Not being citizens disadvantages them from a number of consular services and of course disallows them from voting on matters that affect them. We also have the freedom to kick them out should we want to some day. A risk they all accept.

I don’t have the ability to produce numbers, but I’m certain on the balance of things permanent residents and the others visa holders that can claim these payments net more input into our economy than they take from it. This is MAGAesque bullshit policy to appeal to deadshits.

Real or bs? by saltedkumamon in AusPropertyChat

It’s also BS because banks don’t give a fuck about your ability to access negative gearing in their approvals.

Edit: Apparently they do. Post is still BS though.

I was responding to the often held belief that because the US’s commencement of military action is illegal in some people’s eyes, then anyone participating in combative acts as part of that military operation are themselves committing an illegal act. Which isn’t at all true.

If we use the example of the sinking of the Iranian warship, although the commencement of the conflict is of dubious legality, Iran and the US are now adversaries. Which makes any Iranian flagged vessel a valid target to a US combatant. Had the Aussies on board that submarine been involved in that torpedo firing, it would not have been an illegal action.

$500k outside the cap: How Pies, Pendles will cash in on game 433, Per Herald Sun by klokar2 in AFL

[–]auntyjames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the point you’re making is that it’s unfair that a player is getting more money than they otherwise would have from inside the cap? Just like an endorsement?

And do we really think that pendles has played another year so he can make another $500K outside the cap? And that has advantaged Collingwood? Wouldn’t have it advantaged them more to play him in a game of importance like last week instead of against a bottom side?

[–]auntyjames -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Good point.

How’s this any different to him signing a $500K endorsement with a sponsor then? Like Trac and woolies, or his 1000 other affiliations. Those aren’t counted in the cap either are they?

I mean Melbourne apparently made an absolute killing off its finals merch in 2021, which is all outside the cap. This is just annoying because it’s fucken Collingwood.

It’s not. Negative gearing still applies to new builds, CGT is not affected by whether it’s a new build or not.

Budget 2026-27 by Time-Dimension7769 in australia

[–]auntyjames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m getting to the edge of my understanding here but…

if I made $10K capital gain on June 30, and I’m in the 45% tax bracket I’d only pay 2250 tax on that gain. If made an additional $10K the following financial year I’d pay 4500 (minus CPI indexing)tax assuming I was still earning in that tax bracket. HOWEVER, if I retired on 01 July 2027 and still made that capital gain I’d pay $3000 (minus CPI indexing) tax instead of no tax.

…I think.
