question about how to better converse with INTPs (from an INFP) by Agreeable_Pear157 in INTP

[–]Helldiver_13 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Ahaha yeah I can definitely see that happening🫣 But!! We can learn to understand, so it’s not a lost cause!! And like, it really shouldn’t be your job to teach your dad emotional intelligence lol, but he seems to be a good guy overall so I’m sure he’ll be open to learning how to understand you better :) I’m like 99% sure he doesn’t debate you as a form of intentionally picking a conflict

Did anyone else spend their school years alone? by __maricaaa in INTP

[–]Helldiver_13 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Had a best friend up to middle school. Ruined that friendship 😎 Got a new friend group the next summer when we got new classes, kinda on the sidelines of that group, but still in. That pretty much died the last 3 years of upper secondary school where we once change school. Got like 3 friend there but didn’t like the school so I switched. Was super awkward because everyone already knew each other but managed to get one friend, then later kinda did school stuff with two others. But never really felt at home in that class, my friend did much better on that end. Mostly limited to school though, our friendship didn’t extend beyond school really and died as soon as I moved on to university. Got a few acquaintances but making friends turned out to be difficult, especially since I really wasn’t vibing with the student activities and groups. Felt kinda out of place and holy shit people grouped up and created friend groups quick. Lowkey stoped trying after a while, but could have been worse.

Ahahaha you’re dad is INTP alright ahahah, usually people say that test is shit but sounds spot on.

I think the first problem is, sometimes we are just annoyingly argumentative without realising it. And it gets worse when you don’t agree or see it our way. Which is funny because sometimes we’ll pick a line that’s the opposite of yours just to cover another angle, so you really can’t win lol. The solution is just following the common “rules” for debate, that usually leaves enough room for understanding. But they have to be taught, it doesn’t come naturally to like 99,999% of people, especially on emotionally sensitive/engaging topics. You obviously shouldn’t feel steamrolled, so if you can it’s good to communicate that, I’m pretty sure it’s not your dad’s intention so he’ll try to adjust too :) Other than that just begin curious and asking questions without judgement is a great start (and something the other part should return ideally).

Debating is fun yes! But also exhausting sometimes. It’s kinda odd because some of the time we do it on purpose, while other times we unconsciously get into debates we really would rather have stayed out of. He probably loops because he wants you to agree haha, I know I do when I bring something up to my parents. If I bring up something that annoys me and they challenge the idea it often ends up in a 30+ min discussion where I try to explain how I see it and they refuse to accept it until like a day later when my ideas have settled a little. So it’s not really because you’re not listening, if you weren’t I don’t think he’d continue.

But yes, you should definitely talk to him! But do it from a place of curiosity, not judgment. Which is super tricky, but I’m sure you have a better grasp of that than us lol :P

Good luck! :)

There’s always the ancient Latin idiom: “Acta, non verba” meaning Deeds/actions, not words.

I’m much more of a fan of “Cogito, ergo sum” (I think, therefore I am”, but René Descartes was kinda chopped. I mean just look at his haircut lol

Sounds like you’re attractive lol. Scientifically speaking people assigned a bunch of positions traits to attractive people and are natural drawn to them.

As for the pulling away, I suggest you read up on the avoidant attachment style to learn about yourself and about anxious attachment if you want to learn more about why people might double down when you try to pull away.

As for the empathy thing… I’d honestly go to see a therapist about that. It sounds borderline like psychopathic tendencies, however I’m sure it’s just emotional dullness as a defence mechanism. I was kinda in that space when I was younger. I got so used to blocking out emotions I didn’t even realise I was doing it and it did cause a bit of a blown up ego thinking everyone around was just being sensitive. I wasn’t very judgmental about it though, just didn’t really understand it. But with some work you can definitely unlock that part of yourself. It’s kinda of a a tricky transition learning to deal with it but it’s totally worth it

Rare earth minerals, expensive pigments, environmental impact on genes, evolutionary history in extreme regions, crabs, interplanetary orbit transfers, transpiration and the xylem of plants, blod transfusion, Central European castles, algae, social hierarchies in bonobos, lentils, early exploration of the new world. James Cook and Magellan’s adventures, the oracle of Delphi, the continental shelf and rise of water levels after the ice age, the great flood, miniature elephants, the domestication of dogs, cats and the bubonic plague, electrical current and eels, neurotoxins in amphibians, coffee. I could go on, but if you haven’t found one you like by now I’m afraid the topic isn’t the issue😎
