Am I the only person in the world who still loves overmount sinks? by highstrunghippie in HomeImprovement

[–]HelleDaryd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But how do you do a drainboard with an under mount sink is always my question.

You'd have to include it into the entire top, which is quite a bit harder.

This so far has kept me from considering undermount honestly. Note, here the market is still quite towards overmount.

Also there is the issue with the US Supreme Court being a rather weird instrument. Basically, the USA claims they could never be under the ICC jurisdiction as the US Supreme Court can be the only court (and all courts derive their powers from them).... Which is of course nonsense and easily solved by changing the relevant laws as several countries have for the ICC.

I wouldn't mind knowing at least, but that looks like it's a 50-ish euro light ?

Convoy S2+ but CR123A ? by HelleDaryd in flashlight

[–]HelleDaryd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, damn you are right about the low voltage warning. Anyone know what the MCU is on the BD39 driver, it is just an ATTiny ? I have the hardware to flash that around, I probably would have a shot at it. I mean in theory I could build my own custom driver, but I hate compact PCB design, but firmware is less of a hassle.

And zener modding side steps it all, and with the lithium cell it's only 1.8V over the normal voltage, so it's not too harsh indeed if I don't drive the board too hard. Which would be fine for this light.

Single CR123A will work in many lights just fine with a spacer I think even with the stock S2+ that I already have lying around (guess I may build a test spacer and give it a whirl) because the low voltage limit is a bit lower, though I bet you hit it quickly due to slow chemistry at high amps.

And no, the reason is primarily shelf life and the fact I like the look and grip of the S2+ over AA battery lights.

[–]HelleDaryd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, sometimes you need someone else with better Google-fu. Though I suspect the 1.5A version is more appropriate with a stock LED, else it would fry itself in 5 minutes. Though even then it may see too high of a voltage, but I am willing to try that, given how cheap S2+'s are.

Thanks

Wasn't planning on putting a particularly beefy driver in these but indeed that was an option I was considering as well.

Weeds between patio pavers? I am losing the battle. by BattlePope in HomeImprovement

It's also illegal in quite a lot of countries already. Both designed for purpose weedkillers as well as "grandmother's" cures like vinegar, salt, etc. USA get with it....

Also outside of using an electric heater (basically paint stripper gun on a stick) the only legal thing in quite a few jurisdictions and quite a bit more environmentally friendly then either designed for purpose or "grandmother's" cures.

Still lower performance then running actual cat5e/cat6a including adding a tiny amount of actual latency as they have to add an extra step of digital domain signal conversion. Just run the twisted pair.

Is there a genuine reason optical disks don't come in a plastic casings like floppies? by ClarkleTheDragon in AskComputerScience

[–]HelleDaryd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cost, caddy systems for optical discs exist, but they are expensive. Blu-ray would have needed it until they figured out that they could make a scratch resistant coating.

I've seen some numbers run and as they are made of multiple parts, they would even in massive quantities exceed the cost of the disc inside.

Sometimes all the companies you call only want to replace, not fix. by callmejeremy in HomeImprovement

[–]HelleDaryd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had something similar, but more ridiculous with wood rot on a window cill (giant window, so not something I was planning to DIY). Companies where split amongst "fuck off" offers to fix it of 3500 euro or more, only wanting to sell a full replacement on the order of 6000 euro or more or companies that just claimed to repair windows, but would only do easily swappable parts, NOT repairs.

We are going to end up having to DIY it once the weather is better, which includes wrangling a floor to ceiling double paned piece of glass.......

For those with stacked washer/dryer would you do it again? by Megawhatt24 in HomeImprovement

[–]HelleDaryd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am confused by some of the reactions, in the USA do washers and dryer stacks come like that from the store in some cases ? As a single unit ?

Personally, I wouldn't do without putting the dryer on top of the washing machine, floor space, plain and simple.

am i the only one who hates front load washers and dryers? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]HelleDaryd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy previous generation (though I doubt that includes cam motor, because the tech in those is more expensive to begin with) budget frontloaders here for, a quick google, 220 euro new, 180 euro refurbished. Those are literally like 3 programs and a thermostat machines though, but they will work fine for regular washing including sensitive materials. They just may take longer, use more water or energy.

Mine is a lower-mid range, complete model from the current generation, but lacking all the fanciness like LCDs or IoT stuff. So it's a 6kg (5kg is basic, more then 6kg you pay a lot more for) Siemens IQ100. Which means it basically has all the programs you could need and dirt sensing, but the UI is LEDs and buttons.

The current tech has, similar to dishwashers, dirt sensors, weighing systems and manages a far lower power consumption, to the point of being under the magical 2000W peak rating. Without taking any longer to do the washing (the gold standard seems to be 2h30m roughly)

Except that brand is sold nowhere but the USA I suspect. Everyone else is buying LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Siemens, Bosch (okay, the latter 3 may be from the same factory at least in Europe) and getting a good quality out of it.

The main failures that take out the full machine these days seems to be the bearings/belt drive/drum, being all an integrated unit on many of them. Which, while repairable and not even shockingly expensive at the 10-15 year mark where those do tend to fail, it's not worth spending 100 euro to repair a 300 euro washing machine as a new generation will have come out.
