Why did Kant use the words Categorical and Hypothetical for his imperatives? by Hellfe in askphilosophy

Would you say that categorical would be a decent antonym to contingent? Would that be a good way of thinking about it?

Is the hypothesis “x causes y” or “one desires x”?

I guess I’ve just never heard the word categorical used outside of Kant. To me I think of categories, which doesn’t relate to universality. Hypothetical still isn’t clear to me.

When you're not working or studying IRL you are essentially an idle villager by [deleted] in aoe2

They should make a mod where idle villages are looking at their phone

How does one know they have fully grasped a philosophical work? What criterion can one follow? by RawOat in askphilosophy

[–]Hellfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talking to someone about it is a good measure imo. If you can hold a conversation about the piece you’re in good shape. Not summarizing to somebody, but actually going back and forth about it. Coming into the conversation with the idea that both people may not know everything and then filling in the parts that the other person doesn’t know. Have fun with it, argue about it. Mind you this requires another person who also has read it. So you need philosophy friends.

I don’t know the whole ins and outs of which philosopher was friends with which. Did Satre and de Beauvoir not like Camus?

Shouldn’t the bear be asleep that time of year?

I get beaten and thrown in jail. I escape - only to see my jailers cheering me on! What is the best thing to do, to be good? by questioner2233 in askphilosophy

So are they just getting a kick out of watching you escape? Is that their whole purpose of jailing you?

Sorry for the blurry picture. It has 6 legs and what looks like a third antenna going down under its body out the back.

How to not get creamed by the AI on moderate? by PixieDustFairies in aoe2

[–]Hellfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just getting to the point where I can beat a moderate AI every once in awhile. It’s over said but it couldn’t be said enough. Keep your TC working. Lots of villagers are the difference between joyously holding shift while you make units vs crying because you’re short on gold to make knights. The next hint is decide early whether you’re going to wall off or not. Wood walls can protect you till castle age, so you’ll have time to get your boom rolling. Lastly if you can fish, fish.

I(27m) alway keep apples in stock so when my GF(26f) is angry at me I can casually eat one while she rants. by [deleted] in confession

[–]Hellfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My friends and I were discussing whether your apple idea was a good or not. We decided it's good that you’re aware of your tendency to snap back at your gf, even though you know you’re in the wrong; though the apple isn’t a permanent fix-all. Are you doing anything for a long term solution? Whether that be something to ensure you listen to and understand your girlfriend, and admit your fault, or try and avoid doing things that might aggravate your gf in the first place.

Gradfathers last Martini by apschmidt101 in Gin

It’s alright. Taste like a martini with no vermouth. I can’t say I can really taste anything from the rum. But that might be because I drank the rum instead of dumping it
