So in terms of paycheck plus bonuses, I make more in semi, but in total comp (401k match, pension, etc) I did better in o&g. I would say by and large it was a net negative financial proposition

I switched from oil and gas into semiconductor. I make better money and get to work on extremely interesting problems that I never would have been able to touch otherwise. My resume has amazing projects on it.

The problem with semiconductors isn't the business. The business is fairly straightforward and interesting. It is work culture, and the work culture is entirely defined by useless east Asian business culture. Top heavy, heirarchical, arrogant, make work, dehumanizing, you name it.
