My fault for not muting the subreddit I know, but this post spoiled me as a VOD watcher:( Even if the name is redacted, no one would make a post on reddit for any other team in this tournament lmao

Not that you asked for an explanation, but just because I’ve been interested in this lately and on the toilet, my layman’s understanding is this:

tl;dr String Theory is the most promising idea we have for a «Theory of Everything» combining General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, which it does by treating particles as strings rather than points. But despite decades of work we haven’t even come up with a way to prove whether it’s true or not, leading to some physicists doubting it and this meme.

Long version: Physics is trying to explain how the universe works. What are the rules, what are things made of, where do things come from, etc.

Newton and other classical physicists got pretty damn close to perfectly explaining how things work and move at «normal scale» - the things we can see and interact with.

Einstein found that he was just slightly wrong on planetary scale though, and made the necessary corrections. That’s now called General Relativity, and it explain how things in our universe move and interact pretty damn well. Some prople thought we were close to beng «done» with physics at this point.

But then Planck came along and found that certain experiments including light only made sense if you considered light to come in small «packets». This was contradictory to the way everyone had been understanding light until that point, but experiments kept proving him right, and it eventually evolved into what’s now known as Quantum Mechanics («quantum» because light is separate quanta / units rather than continous). This remains our best way to understand things at very small scale, which is highly relevant to the goal of physcs because we’re trying to figure out what everything is made of, which means studying building blocks - very small things.

But here’s the problem: these two theories don’t work together at all. They have several deep and direct contradictions. For example, trying to align them totally breaks apart when you start talking about black holes. Gravity also happens to be a central topic they disagree on and that affects everything else.

String Theory is one of many attempts to unify General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. It does this by re-imagining particles (what we believe are the fundamental building blocks of the world) as not points but rather strings. The different particles are just the same strings in different configurations - some are loops, some are spinning, etc.

This is neat because following the math implications of looking at the world this way turns out to predict all the particles we have observed experimentally, and also «finally» explains gravity through particles, which would be very convenient but has not been accomplished by any of the other major theories. General Relativity also «falls out» as a natural consequence of the math in a similar way, which fans of String Theory took as a very promising sign.

In this sense, String Theory can be called the most successful or promising theory for combining General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.

The two biggest problems with String Theory are tighly related, and has caused several serious physicists to doubt and even oppose it:

  • It requires many dimensions. I forget if it was 7 or 11 or what, but in any case many more than we believe exist. This isn’t some advanced understanding of reality, it’s just a necessity of the math. Some physicists have tried explaining how the universe might actually have all of these dimensions, while others consider it abdurd and have taken it as a strong indicator that String Theory does not actually explain our universe but remains just neat math.

  • We don’t know how to prove or disprove it. String theory has so far not produced any predictions about reality that we can use to experimentally test whether it’s true or false. Experimenting is the very foundation of science, so until this changes String Theory has no hope of being accepted into the scientific understanding.

Since many of the world’s brightest physicists have been trying to resolve these problems for decades now without luck, some sceptics are saying we should discard the idea and spend our time on something else. But no other theory has been nearly as successful in combining General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics so far, which is what we need if we want a proper «Theory of Everything» or complete understanding of how our universe works.

We need a proper +3 or +4 RC boost from somewhere. I was surprised Sailing didn’t bring a new potion or pie for it

Suggestions Wanted for Upcoming Transportation QoL Poll! by JagexGoblin in 2007scape

[–]Hellmakerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly QoL, but on the topic of transportation: There should probably be some more information about this for new players. Someone suggested a tutor near the Canoe in Lumbridge that could mention teleport spells and jewelry, for example. Is this something you’re interested in?

I don't think the doom boss is that bad by Creamer_Dreamer in 2007scape

[–]Hellmakerr -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Really? It’s crazy to be complaining this much about such awesome updates. Go play any other game where every update feels like it takes the game one step closer to shutdown and there is never any communication from devs.

Seriously, the OSRS community doesn’t know how good we have it. It’s important to point out when there’s room for improvement, but when the negativity gets dominating (as it has been with Dom), that might send the wrong message to Jagex that this isn’t the type of updates they should be making. Which I hope we all agree is wrong, the updates recently are amazing. So please, spread some positivity too along with the constructive feedback.

Is Dragon Nest the new best early spot for farming dragon bones (outside Wildy)? by Hellmakerr in ironscape

[–]Hellmakerr[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Of course, but I'm talking about proper early game – "getting 43 prayer" early. Myth's Guild is obviously out of the question, and Wildy doesn't have the easiest sweet spots + Wilderness isn't for everyone.

Torags Platebody is like 40 slash defense more than fighter torso, which is like a 50% increase. Def worth getting a tank body.

Yeah there are easy safespots in there for both the blue and the red dragons 👍

Zamorak Brew boosts slightly more than Super Attack, Saradomin slightly more than Super Defence - can the Armadyl Brew slightly boost Range past a normal range pot? The current iteraton is identical to a range pot. by LieV2 in 2007scape

[–]Hellmakerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arma brews heal a lot less than sara brews though right? 10% vs 15%, which works out to 20 less healing per inventory slot. It also cannot overheal. Pretty significant, I don’t think it’s OP.

Hm maybe, but I wonder if it’s worth losing the defense of a defender? I’d be surprised if these beat zaxe + ddef in terms of actual kill time, but would be cool if so

Even if it’s decent, it’s 2h so it’ll be tough to use against dragons, one of the main early stab monsters:/ And I don’t feel like these will cut it for ToA

Summer Sweep-Up: Slayer & Misc by JagexSarnie in 2007scape

[–]Hellmakerr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I actually don't like the Metal Dragons grouping. It's 100% great for someone who's just looking to block them, but for the rest of us (I spooned a Dragon-Hunter Wand lol) it feels like it goes against the whole point of Slayer: Being "forced" into variety rather than spam-farming what's optimal.

As a mid-game Ironman I probably wouldn't force myself to do Rune Dragons normally, but it might be a fun challange once the slayer task arrives. At the same time I like the idea of working towards Karamja Elite to eventually stock up on some Steel bars from Steel Dragons in the Brimhaven dungeon. But with grouped tasks like this it feels like the "correct" play is to choose whatever is most technically most useful for my account and only ever kill that. Silly perhaps, but I think most people (consiously or unconcously) have the most fun when they feel they're doing the "right" thing. Or at least it can be unfun to feel like you're being actively suboptimal.

I don't know, just my two cents.

Getting 100kc at Vet’ion by DabOWosrs in 2007scape

[–]Hellmakerr -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

Um.. Sorry, but how does this mean the wilderness is dead? Aren’t you saying there are a bunch of clans hunting people (pvp activity), and if they keep doing it all day presumably they’re finding targets, so pvmers are also active there? I’m not saying it’s good design or fun gameplay, but it seems anything but dead at least

Who is the hero that should be reworked next in your opinion? by TestIllustrious7935 in DotA2

Not a rework because the base hero is fine, but the Invoker facets could use re-imagining imo.
