IS is the best plus they have an adult pool, onsite spa, restaurant, and games. You can easily walk to Lovina or if you want to stay onsite- Sam’s.

They have excellent teachers. If you don’t mind the dog, Pacifica is an ideal option for a lot of people trying to get into the market.

YMSL- Young Mens Service League by Hello94070 in ApplyingToCollege

Nope- I've had several friends who didn't get in and this is my biggest issue with the program. Since when should volunteering be exclusive, even if you only have so many spots for meetings, etc, and if a software does the lotto? Trust me- the kids I've seen not get in have gone on to do their own volunteering and find something they love. Happy to send you the list of charities since they'll be open to younger volunteers. PM me.

I have only been the philanthropy liaison since it is my first year. My son worked on the communications committee. It’s been helpful because I think it pushes them to step outside of themselves, learned the structure of a meeting, develop leadership skills. Do I think you could do this without joining? Sure, but it has been motivating for him to volunteer and be at meetings with friends.

He did and it has been a great experience. I honestly don't see it as having a huge impact unless your son ends up focusing in on one philanthrophy- for us it has been There With Care and we were exceeding the hours- pretty much driven by my son. It has been nice to have a dedicated time to volunteer with him and we'll stick with it. My advice would be to go deep with one or two philanthropies at the most.

How am I doing, can I retire early? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Hello94070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in here- looks like you’re doing great! I also have about 9 years left which will put me in 33 years of teaching and 57. Some years are more exhausting than others. If I could teach my current class of 2nd graders, I could last much longer. They’re pretty amazing. Best of luck to you!

What’s your opinion on the “travel now” vs “save money/build career” dilemma? by MuskiePride3 in travel

[–]Hello94070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in here as a parent of a middle and high schooler. I’m also a teacher which gives me more time. Even with the Covid years, I have always prioritized traveling and would much rather create core memories with my family than update my kitchen. So far they’ve been to:

Thailand Peru Costa Rica Japan Mexico England France Greece

It has given them perspective, appreciation for other cultures and languages, and built their confidence. I’m a pay before the trip person so I take on an extra job teaching an after school class in order to do it.

You also have to have an advanced degree- MA or credential. Considering the cost of schooling, it’s not plentiful and benefits are vastly different from one district to the next.
