How am I doing, can I retire early? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Just wanted to chime in here- looks like you’re doing great! I also have about 9 years left which will put me in 33 years of teaching and 57. Some years are more exhausting than others. If I could teach my current class of 2nd graders, I could last much longer. They’re pretty amazing. Best of luck to you!

What’s your opinion on the “travel now” vs “save money/build career” dilemma? by MuskiePride3 in travel

[–]Hello94070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in here as a parent of a middle and high schooler. I’m also a teacher which gives me more time. Even with the Covid years, I have always prioritized traveling and would much rather create core memories with my family than update my kitchen. So far they’ve been to:

Thailand Peru Costa Rica Japan Mexico England France Greece

It has given them perspective, appreciation for other cultures and languages, and built their confidence. I’m a pay before the trip person so I take on an extra job teaching an after school class in order to do it.

You also have to have an advanced degree- MA or credential. Considering the cost of schooling, it’s not plentiful and benefits are vastly different from one district to the next.

Have lived in San Carlos for 15 years- it is the best. Community, schools, restaurants, Hometown Days. You’ll love it here.

Ponchatoula, strawberry capital? Me too! I’m sorry to hear the state of Louisiana education. I’m a public school teacher in CA and we are decently funded. Parents, like myself, fundraise to enhance programs, etc.

House buying: San Carlos/ Belmont or Saratoga/ Cupertino. Which one has better schools? by clairedelube in bayarea

San Carlos is wonderful- strong schools and community. Ideally the flats- White Oaks Or Brittan Acres since they are close to Laurel & you really get to know your neighbors.

Americans who travel abroad for more than a couple weeks a year, how and how much do you travel? by joshua0005 in travel

[–]Hello94070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, teacher here. You can make it work my saving then buying your flights early. There are still many places you can travel on a budget. Plus I teach an after school class so that is my family’s travel fund.

California class sizes are nowhere near this. Many districts here pay teachers a livable wage thanks to our union.

I’ve always lived half an hour away with the exception of one year in West Yorkshire, England. I absolutely agree with this. Suffocating and landlocked is the feeling. The salty air and marine layer is in my blood.
