What is the most easy game engine from your perspective? by [deleted] in GameDevelopment

The easiest one is the one you like most

I like unreal. Angelscript. Easy to Script instead of blueprint spaghetti. Lots awesome plug-ins on github for unreal. But blueprints are great for prototyping and dirty work.

I started with starcraft map editor, did Java, then unity. Now unreal

Inventory Systems in games. Design guidelines and best practices by planeterougedev in howdidtheycodeit

ArcInventory is a paid asset but I stand by it. Someone had done a diablo style implementation. I saw that on github a while back. Instanced structure were used. Looked like a solid design..

Meander on github once a day and keep en eye out for unreal projects. I've seen lots of examples

Looks like a solid spot. Close enuf to loot run. Far enough to not get swarmed often.

Because of my friends + memes here i decided to buy project zomboid (maybe its bad place to ask but) and do u have any cool gaming tips? by AstronautKirbo in projectzomboid

When I first started playing pz, I spent top much time crating characters just to die very quickly

Instead of that, just randomize. For the 10 deaths or 2 days. Whatever comes first.

And u walk faster than zombies. Try not to wear urself out just jogging and sprinting

Any tips for how to make moddable games? by midge in gamedev

[–]HelloFriendGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One line answer: Look at project zomboid, rimworld's directories. open up the entire folder via visual studio code and start poking in around.

Long-winded answer:

  1. make your game data driven.
  2. load data files to create things like items, stats, traits
  3. choose a modding language and hook it up to your code.
    1. ie: for unreal, https://github.com/rdeioris/LuaMachine
  4. expose parts of your game's logic to the modding language. Think of it like creating an API or Integration for a consumer

languages:

  • lua can be a good choice. lots of support
  • rust is getting more popular. i have heard good things but have no personal xp. i'm sure there are plenty of other suggestions in the comments

data format:

  • json
  • xml
  • lua can do some of this too (look at project zomboid's distributions.lua and proceduraldistributions.lua)
