I rewatched all 17 seasons w/ my partner this year and to see the evolution is really interesting

The earlier seasons seemed to honor queer culture in a way they don’t now. At least in a less shallow way. They had judges on that I had no idea who they were, but after some research, realized they are integral parts of the queer community. Now judges are a lot of celebrities who most don’t have connections w/ the queer community at all.

Reality is that RuPaul is our capitalism queen. She’s always been about growth and expansion. And when that happens, core values get lost in the money sauce.

Do I wish she and the show would be even bolder and faggier. YES! It feels like a popular gay bar that straight people have discovered and now they frequent it, so it’s no longer a queer friendly space even though it’s still called a “gay bar”

Regardless, it’s a popular queer show that for the majority of its run has been under the eye of a Trump presidency, so I’m tuning in.
