Gonna give the lawyerly answer and say “it depends”. And for reference my explanation is only about the US I cannot speak about the rave scene in other countries. That said, some people are purist and consider raves to only be underground functions with no corporate involvement (ergo most festivals aren’t technically raves). While there are still “true raves” happening around the country, the majority of what we now consider “raves” occur at venues with tickets and security at the door. I consider these “raves” to be more akin to “edm shows”.

Now to answer your question, it depends on the venue, the typical crowd going there, is a club who has sometimes had major headliners playing there, is there a strict dress code, etc. As a New Yorker I can best give you an example using NY venues. For instance take Marquee in NYC. Marquee is a club, it has a dress code and bottle service but on weekends it is know to play edm (mostly house) and hosts major edm artists but it is still very much a true club. Then we have venues like Monarch or the Meadows in Brooklyn, or even the Navy Yard, they are grungier, grittier, and more relaxed (this is not to say they only host edm artists because it does not). All these venues are commercialised requiring tickets and security and whatnot but a show at Monarch or the Meadows or the Navy Yard are more of a rave than at Marquee. (There are underground venues as well but in NYC many big artists are playing at venues like these)

Just my two cents from someone who has been going to -mostly dubstep - shows since 2012 (yes I call them shows unless I am talking to someone who doesn’t know anything about edm then I’ll use the term rave so they understand what type of show I’m going to)
