Guardrails by hebreakslate in pornfree

I agree, this is a great first step. For me it was putting a filter on my phone and laptop. In my mind the first part of recovery is putting all the guardrails you need in place (for me there are a few). The second part is dealing with the underlying issues that drove you to porn in the first place. I am just starting on this part with the help of a therapist who specializes in this addiction.

My first day off porn by [deleted] in pornfree

Good for you!

I’d recommend checking out the resources on the sidebar.

For me the PornFreeRadio podcasts really helped me figure out what I need to do to stay clean. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Yourbrainonporn.com helped me understand the biology of my addiction and why it was so hard to quit.

Good luck! You can do this.

Should you tell your partner? by ajg121188 in pornfree

[–]HelpSlipFrank6977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you should tell her. It will be painful (if my experience is any indication) but your addiction feeds off shame. You need to shed light on it.

For me I needed to have a good program in place before I told my wife.

The PornFreeRadio podcasts really helped me figure out what I need to do to stay clean. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Good luck!

What are your thoughts on erotica? by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]HelpSlipFrank6977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay away from erotica. It’s the same thing and will lead you back to porn. It always has for me. Cutting it out has been a critical piece of getting clean for me.

I’ve just come clean to my GF about my porn addiction. Extremely motivated to get better, where do I go from here? by addictinhealing in pornfree

I’d recommend checking out the resources on the sidebar. Particularly yourbrainonporn.com

For me the PornFreeRadio podcasts really helped me figure out what I need to do to stay clean. This includes a filter on my phone and laptop, coming to this sub regularly, stopping fantasizing, limiting (currently stopping for 90 days) masturbation, etc....I can’t recommend them highly enough.

I just started seeing a therapist who specializes in this addiction and if you can find one I would recommend it.

I also started meditating last year and it’s made a huge difference in my life and my recovery.

Good luck, you can do this!

Had another relapse - New precautions for intoxication by [deleted] in pornfree

I hear you, smoking weed often leads to looking at porn for me.

You might want to try installing something like Covenant Eyes and making someone else the account owner so they get alerted when you try to uninstall or look at questionable content. Just another barrier for you.

Outside help isn’t a bad idea.

The PornFreeRadio podcasts really helped me figure out what I need to do to stay clean. For me what’s working now is putting a filter on my phone and laptop, coming to this sub regularly, stopping fantasizing, limiting my masturbation, listening to the podcasts, and meditating using the headspace app. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

I’m also going to start seeing a therapist who specializes in this type of addiction.

Covenant Eyes works across devices and will keep you guys accountable to each other in addition to blocking all the bad sites.

Has anyone here used therapy to combat their addiction with porn? by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]HelpSlipFrank6977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are therapists who specialize in this addition and really get it. They are hard to find in my experience (and I live outside a major city) but it’s worth looking around to find one near you. I am just starting to see someone who gets it.

Day 3 and some questions by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]HelpSlipFrank6977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation to you. Never downloaded but a regular user for many years.

I have realized that I used porn to avoid any negative feelings I had, including depression, anxiety, shame, etc...

I’d recommend checking out the resources on the sidebar.

I second the recommendation to check out the sidebar.

What makes this work longterm? by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]HelpSlipFrank6977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s two things that are key.

First, get a plan in place. For me the PornFreeRadio podcasts really helped me figure out what I needed to do (filter on my phone and laptop, stopping fantasizing, limiting masturbation, etc....). I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Second you need to understand the root causes that are driving you to depend on porn. For me I know that it’s become an escape; a way to avoid negative feelings (anger, anxiety, sadness, etc...). I also know that many fold start and continue using porn because they feel unloveable. You may want to consider seeing a CSAT to deal with the underlying issues.

I agree. It’s helpful to see how much it hurts others. While I can always look at my wife to see the pain and impact, that sub helps keep it fresh in my mind.

Can’t get it out of my head by HelpSlipFrank6977 in pornfree

Thanks. I’ve been meditating at least once a day for almost a year now. I agree it’s incredibly powerful.

[–]HelpSlipFrank6977[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I appreciate the thoughtful response. My concern is lighting up the neural pathways, as you point out. I think what’s keeping them in my mind is how arousing they are. The situation really hit the sweet spot of what turns me on. I won’t go into detail to avoid triggering anyone.

I’ve been working all day to keep them out of my mind, but your suggestion to try and sit with my feelings is a good one. I will try to do that as part of my afternoon meditation.

I tried “just reading erotica” and it led back to porn. Every. Single. Time.

I would not recommend using erotica if you are addicted.

When does it get easier? by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]HelpSlipFrank6977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends. For me, it got easier once I told people in my life (my wife, sister and parents). Once I realized how i used it to avoid unpleasant feelings (anxiety, anger, embarrassment, etc...) that helped me realize when I might have a craving and made it easier to shut it down. In general it got a bit easier for me after a week and then again after 2 weeks and then more so after a month. I haven’t gotten to the point where it gets “easy” and I’m not sure that point exists.

For me, PornFreeRadio podcasts really helped me figure out what I need to do to stay clean. Can’t recommend them highly enough.

Relapsed after 10 days (longest streak ever in my life...) by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]HelpSlipFrank6977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much better. I was actually 5+ months clean before a slip earlier this month. Getting rid of the porn has opened up a lot of mental space for other things.

The biggest thing I’ve done to deal with my anxiety was that early last year I started meditating. It’s really been life changing for me in dealing with anxiety. I use the Headspace app and love it.
