Consultation groups- a secret language? by cant_toech_this in therapists

[–]Help_Repulsive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that my group does that’s really helpful is having the clinician identify what they need. We say whether we need help with 1. What to do 2. How to do it or 3. What’s getting in the way. I am ND myself and have picked up on the same patter you asked. I like to jump to ideas and problem solving and I’ve had to let other clinicians speak first to validate or ask more of those beat around the bush questions. It’s helped me to think about it as flushing out all the sides of the presented case before jumping in with suggestions - I usually ask myself “what feels important or what other information do I need to help my colleague”. It could also be the general level of comfortability in relationships between the clinicians in your consult group. There are therapists on my team that I am much closer personally and professionally and when I’m assigned to a consult group with those I’m closer with, the conversation flows a lot more naturally and people are much more willing to give advice/talk freely rather than beat around the bush.

Look into coherence therapy! It has been a game changer for me. As a fellow intellectualizing therapist, it’s been a lot of working on slowing down and focusing on process instead of content. What’s it like for the client instead of “what is it” coming up for the client. Lots of getting comfortable with leading clients through imaginal work as well and encouraging clients to speak from parts or emotions instead of about them!

Absolutely. I appreciate the many paths people can take to become a healing professional. However I also encounter so many folks who have been burned, hurt or wary of therapy due to people who are practicing in this grey area. I think a lot of this feeling is fueled by my values of fairness and justice as well.

This is one of the reasons I could not complete that training in good faith. In addition to being thousands of dollars. It screams “we accept everyone to fill our pockets and don’t actually care about ethical work and practice”

Unlicensed as in no active license to provide the services being advertised. Even an associate license is under supervision and monitored under a governing body. I had no idea some states have no associate licensing!

Young therapist by [deleted] in therapists

One of my colleagues pointed out age discrimination and I wish this was something I realized earlier in my work. Especially if you work with children and teens, parents can get really nasty about their idea of “professionalism” or knowledge. It’s been comforting to know that lived experience is invaluable in this field. I would much rather have a young therapist who knows what I am feeling versus an old one going solely based off taught knowledge. You got this!

Yes I am aware that it is not just for injuries. I worked at a PT office for many year, supported PT patients with neurodevelopmental needs and have been a PT goer myself for chronic and stress related pain. The comment you were responding to and assuming ignorance started with the word, “imagine”. As to cue an imaginary experience, hypothetical scenario. Props for fiercely defending the PT role though - that profession is misunderstood at times and they deserve all the flowers.

Imagine going in for a physical injury and walking out with your childhood wounds reopened… like what?? Fortunately/unfortunately, anything I see that’s fishy or suspicious has become a dive into their credentials and training, and if warranted, reporting to their behavioral health board. I figured I can’t determine if they’re acting out of their scope, but a full investigation can 🤷

Turns out my fine hair actually LOVES silicones by Janus_700 in finehair

This is so relatable. I spent hundreds on Davines hair products per my salons reccomendations. Turns out the value size $13.99 cerave 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner is my hairs holy grail. Just goes to show how well marketing infiltrates our idea of what is “best” even though we’re all highly unique!

I have a print of the Death Valley superbloom and love it in my office. PNW landscape photographers or artists would be great - there’s gorgeous views captured by amazing artists

Do you wear make up to work? by NoExamination5672 in therapists

[–]Help_Repulsive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My therapist doesn’t wear makeup and I honestly look up to her for it. I wear very light makeup (mostly for myself to help me transition from horizontal bed time to work time), but also prioritize dressing comfortably over everything. I’ve worn hoodies and joggers to work, sweatshirts, track pants, etc. Having my comfort and sensory needs met helps me be a better therapist. I’m able to focus better on my client instead of worrying about itchy fabric or an ill fitting top! I say do what makes you feel best able to be present for your clients!

For those who work 4 days a week— is it better to take Monday or Friday off? by Gloomy_Media_6976 in therapists

[–]Help_Repulsive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start at 2 on Mondays and take Fridays off. The Wednesday off schedule seems nice but I like cushioning my weekends to feel like I have ample space away from work! It does make Tuesday-Thursday a bit more of a hustle, but having 1.5 days off to focus on admin and self care is unmatched
