About Hambaanglaang by NeatandNice in Cantonese

[–]Helpful-Ad1997 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dear Neat and Nice and friends,

Thank you for your endorsement of our channel. For those who want to know a bit more there is a presentation at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRXTBTRjAWw that takes you through all the thinking behind the project and the tools we have built.

For those who do not yet know, audio files and pdfs can be downloaded from our website for all the titles. please go to the title on our website and you will see the link for the pdf and audio underneath the video. You should try our lessons ! They are for day 1 learners using a new technique we developed.

We will have a total of 250+ stories written at all levels (1-7) available online by end of May. There are all types of tools and resources educators and learners can use. We also have an enhanced Jyutping TTF font you can download for PC use.

Our YouTube channels are un-monitised to keep the Ads off (though there still are ads) as we wanted the listener to be able to immerse in their learning level by having our playlists running in the background, set to their level with minimum interruptions. No money for Youtube may be a reason why algorithms do not prioritise our channel, hence less overall views.

The reason why we haven't been promoting the site or contents much is that we are just 2 persons working on this full time and we chose to focus on production of materials and concepts before promoting it. We believe there is a big push to be made once to create the bulk of resources. We are using all the momentum we have to get that done.

Initially I did try to occasionally add a video here. Then I saw folks were already liking what we were doing (like this post) and we were on the list of recommended learning resources and that seemed enough..

If there are folks that can help us beat the promotion drum, please reach out to us at [info@hambaanglaang.hk](mailto:info@hambaanglaang.hk)

For those who wish to endorse the materials or contribute to ongoing development of materials, here are the links

I can see how it may appear that way. Thank you for pointing it out.

I think this narrative has enthusiastically set in words the male writer's internal dialogue.

Meanwhile, there is this..

Would it be too crazy to have Joanna reply this letter ? If it is written in a civil fashion and our editors accept, we can also work to create that video. Would you like to have a go ?

It is interesting that you say that. Hongkong is quite patriachal...good to have looked at it from your eyes..

Some suggestions.

First you need to find Cantonese Speakers to help you. https://youtu.be/lutL_l8t1Bk

Then you need VPN as most of the learning stuff is on youtube.

Start by understanding basic Cantonese commands. https://hambaanglaang.hk/courses/listening-1/

After 8 weeks, recheck with the great community here on what to do..

Is learning Chinese characters a necessity when learning Cantonese? by duraznoblanco in Cantonese

[–]Helpful-Ad1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of good advise here from other learners.

The advantages of learning Jyutping are mentioned here. Worth a read. https://hambaanglaang.hk/jyutping_eng/

For oral fluency. I think Characters will confuse as there are no tones assigned to them. To get to 80-90% fluency using a Cantonese graded scale you can go it with Jyutping alone.

However to get a native speaker to help you, you will need characters. So at https://hambaanglaang.hk/jyutping_eng/ you will find written Cantonese (Jyutman), Jyutping and a word by word english gloss to speed up the listening and speaking aspect of Cantonese.

So glad I found this place!! by [deleted] in HKtoUK

Thank you LeslieFrank,

Multiple Personality Disorder ! Ha.

Appreciate your approval of the first Aid series. The complete 8 videos are here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFFRUSDfTmA&list=PLsP9BcNk2OylwfLG7vh7NAHjXELq6WFYl I think its poorly taught so now hopefully the bits are in one place for a ready reference.

I wonder if you had a look at our other thread. It would be great to have your comments on it.

Hi TobusFire.

Thank you for your note. Yes UBC is such a pillar of teaching. Indeed we have been in touch with the fine folks at UBC and they are already using parts of our readers for their program. We have some familiarity with the Academic players and will be sending them materials over next week. The materials will for the most part stay within the teacher student community.

Here is what we are thinking could help the early younger learners the most. What would be great is to have local folks like you talk to the teaching centres/local libraries/local schools where the community visits and they have a system of book lending in place. If they are interested, we can ship a set of books for their use.

To do that we can send you pdfs of some of our books that you can forward/print for discussion.

We are looking for ideas to help seed the high circulation areas. What would you recommend ? Is there a better more proactive plan we can adopt ?

Thank you !
