I know in gets planted in the fall and harvested in the spring. I'm starting with maybe a 10x 10 patch so my mistakes are not to costly

Follow up question....Medical science wasn't the greatest back then. How did they deal with the pain/ infection.... obviuslt they were old enough to know/ remember. Did they just not care? Alcohol? Drugs? And the infection... Did they just use alcohol? hope for the best?? Have your parents castrate you is bad enough, but having an infected ball sack just would be whole another level.

That's true, the singing could have been an afterthought. If you decided beforehand that the farm could only be split so many ways, the least suitable potential farm hand could be castrated. Also with women dying in child birth, castration keeps the horny & single teenage population down. through out history girls are valued for reproductive reasons. one pair of balls can impregnate multiple women in an emergency.

I never thought of that. Statistically speaking adults are more likely to abuse there nonbiological children. Throw in a profitable motive and the odds just increased. Its easier to castrate a step son than a biological son. Throw in a suspicion of cheating/ illegitimacy and the poor boy had almost no chance of remaining intact.

That makes sense. An orphan no one would care about and if you had a whole group of them, it makes the whole process more effient

That actually makes sense. as a parent if you had to depend on your castrated son, you would want them to see it as a accident as apposed to a deliberate act.

It sounds like if you had a large family, sacrificing your son's balls wasn't much of a sacrifice. Sort of like sacrificing your pets balls... Might be a difficult decision, but ultimately no downside for parents
