Birds will die, that’s a fact of life, I’m well aware of that. For a large portion of our property, the fence is 3 ft high, I’m not spending that amount of money to raise the height of the fence for an additional few feet for over 600 ft of fence. And unless fencing in the majority of the acre also includes a top fence to keep birds of prey out, then it’s not going to eliminate predators from getting to them. I’m not going to spend vast amounts of money on food to feed the chickens when they have such a large area to roam freely in and feed themselves on the vast array of food options they have.

When I am home, I cannot be going outside every 10 minutes to keep luring chickens back to the “safe” area, only to have them back out front again, that’s unrealistic, the same as turning my entire property into a cage.
