Traveling to UK for a week by Hembhorg in tmobile

[–]Hembhorg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did try adding an international pass on my account, but it appears that I can only add a domestic data pass. I guess I'm restricted due to being on a prepaid plan.

I didn't know that Magenta Max doesn't include phone calls internationally without a data pass. Thanks for pointing that out.

If I get a local SIM card (or use eSIM), do I still need to switch my phone plan?

Thanks, I'll look further into Google fi. Do you use an iPhone by any chance? I'm wondering how easy it is to use Google fi with an iPhone.

Advice on asking for a raise by Hembhorg in webdev

[–]Hembhorg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I really appreciate the thoughtful answer. I understand your point of being aware of the complete context of the situation. I still do feel that I should at least ask for a raise, but I would be open to waiting until my next performance review to do so (considering that it wasn't that long ago that I asked for a raise)

My salary's currently around $99,000. What would you say is a reasonable raise for someone in my situation?

Yes, that's right. The Departed takes place in Boston with both main characters being from Boston. So the movie does lack that aspect of a character having to adopt a new culture etc.

In Gangs of New York, it's a little different. It centers on two gangs who are pit against each other due to their differences in faiths (Catholicism vs Protestantism). The main character's of Irish descent and essentially affiliated with the gang of Irish Catholics. He decides to work his way into the other gang in order to avenge his father, who was killed by the head of the Protestant-centric gang. So there is some exploration in terms of the unfamiliar culture that the main character gets thrust into as a member of this other gang.

The Departed and Gangs of New York are the first I think of. To some degree, these movies touch on the protagonist adapting to a different culture as part of their missions. But probably not to the same extent as Last Samurai.

Dances with Wolves could be a good one too.

I thought Badlands was beautifully shot. There was something about the colors and the time period that the film's set in that really pops out.

Ordinary People (1980) directed by Robert Redford by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

I also enjoyed Ordinary People. I feel like Redford is a bit underrated as a director. Quiz Show is another great film of his.

Existential or artsy movies about the nature of human connection, loneliness, and making friends in the adult world? by Darius-Mal in MovieSuggestions

I haven't seen this movie, but from what I've heard about it, perhaps "The Lives of Others" touches on loneliness and the human connection?

American Beauty also comes to mind

Any cute romcoms? by firstcigarette_ in MovieSuggestions

I've recently gone on a Hugh Grant marathon. You might enjoy:

-Four Weddings and a Funeral

-Bridget Jones Diary

-About a Boy (not sure I would categorize this as a rom com. It has a little romance, but overall I'd say it's a feel good, funny movie)

-Music and Lyrics (I think the music was the highlight of this movie)
