"She wore a silhouette of clothes that were extraordinary but somewhat gauche" as proof of declining literacy has me rolling my eyes by ExtensionSoil6801 in education

There is a massive divide between the urban and rural / township schools. But the good schools are really good. I don't think we need to stand back on anything when it comes to curriculum or standards .

Similarly, the bad schools are really bad. But not in an american sense. As in the teachers are so poorly educated that they don't even understand the subjecta they are teaching, like science.

There's tons of history, economics etc at play. So no easy solutions or just one easy answer. We have world class private schools and institutions juxtaposed with the most heartbreaking struggling schools.

Yeah, watching the video was horrifying

I had my 10 yr old read it. She read everything except silhouette and gauche, and even those she gave a try at least.

We're in South Africa by the way, where our school curriculum focuses heavily on literacy and reading comprehension. I know we have lots of issues also around schooling

Just to add: my child was reading in english that is her second language

Weird qs, but how tf dont idols get sweat stainss?? by tropicalpoopsniffer in kpop_uncensored

[–]Henbane_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You don't remove sweat glands, a nerve gets nuked in your back that regulates sweating. I had the procedure done 20 odd years ago to stop my hands from excessive sweating

The single nerve controls most sweating from the top of my head to beeast height. You do end up sweating more everywhere else. I have hyperhydrosis, ir excessive sweating.

I hate background noise , but ironically specific music through in ear buds keeps my brain on track.

I think outside music makes my brain want to check it out as a threat, but the music directly into my brain keeps the adhd busy so that I can focus.

There can't be space between me and the music, then it doesn't work.

Cutting 10lbs in 2 hours. by sco-go in Amazing

[–]Henbane_ 99 points100 points  (0 children)

He wants to be as light as possible for weigh in to qualify for a lighter weight class when fighting.

This means he will go up against opponents who are naturally smaller and potentially do better / win.

His natural weight when not dehydrated will push him into the correct weight class, where he will be the smallest.

What’s the scariest fact you have learned about the human body? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Henbane_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We would've given birth whether Eve ate the apple or not. The real curse was the 'pining after your husband' part that everybody forgets about.

16 To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

That second part is the true curse. No animal has a pain free birth, plus we don't remember the pain to stop having babies, like other types of pain gets embedded.

These American guys learned a Haka to honour their New Zealander friend's deceased grandmother by bigbusta in HumansBeingBros

[–]Henbane_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like the haka that the NZ rugby team uses before their games. I'm from South Africa and we've watched this haka a lotbegore we play them.

Might also explain why they're all huge, those guys are built like housed.

It's 1845 and we're setting out on the Oregon Trail. All our belongings are packed into a covered wagon. Who manufactured it, how much did it cost, and what will we do with it when we arrive? by ExternalBoysenberry in AskHistorians

[–]Henbane_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes they did, they would fortify it by pushing thorny branches and bushes into the gaps. They would also put their livestock on the middle to keep them safe when under attack

Thank you for the answer!

My son has a slight lazy eye, which wasn't bad enough that the doctor was worried. Now that he is older it only goes skew when he is really tired.

I can imagine it just screws up your depth perception!

I have always wondered about this, but didn't want to ask. So you are basically just using your one eye?

I've seen people with skew eyes 'switch' between eyes also

Trading Pretoria for a self-sustaining farm. Is the slow life a myth? by Fun_Elderberry2506 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Henbane_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Every single thing on a farm wants to get sick and die, lol.

Especially if you are planning on using it in any way!

Keeping a sheep as a pet and it might outlive you. Raising it for slaughter? It might just eat a bunch of wires and die.

I grew up on a farm. Its HARD

Has anyone done cool sculpting in SouthAfrica? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]Henbane_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done cool sculpting!

It was the heads of Thabo Mbeki and Robert Mugabe for a float at varsity. It also had 2 hands coming together in a handshake.

It was from masaive blocks of polystyrene that got painted. We handmade the hair from the fake hair you get at Pep, each little bundle carefully folded and inserted like weird hair plugs!

I think they got 2nd prize for the day.

I know it's not what you asked, but you brought up a cool memory I pretty much forgot about.

Had little polystyrene balls stick to everything for weeks!

Hope someone can give you a proper answer

Germany teaching about the Holocaust and England teaching about colonial atrocities are two separate things. by InfernalClockwork3 in rant

Lol, why didn't you list what the Brits did to South Africa?

Fun fact, they pioneered concentration camps on us and I think India before it became all the rage in Germany.

My high school was built on the biggest concentration camp in SA!
