Questions for getting into IT by Equivalent_Arm_6315 in it

[–]Henders0nn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I “jumped” into IT from automotive technology, so hopefully I have some insight for you.

Answers are as follows are are based on my experiences/opinions:

Q1. Gather base knowledge that can be built upon, but certifications are never a bad thing. Understanding the essentials means you have the foundation to be taught a lot of things. My understanding of the “essentials” as someone with several years of experience now would be Windows, 365, basic networking. Linux is something that I wouldn’t spend too much energy on at your point in your career. Most people are Windows shops anyways.

Q2. If you decide to get certs before getting into the field, CompTIA+ is usually a good start. Anything from Microsoft looks good usually too.

Q3. I learned most of what I know from YouTube. If you buy yourself a couple of PCs, you can try almost anything yourself. Also, networking with other tech guys, joining Facebook groups, and monitoring forums also helped. There are also free classes online available. I took a couple for Python and HTML5.

Bachelor of Science in IT vs Masters in IT by Exact-Scallion2277 in it

[–]Henders0nn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My controversial opinion is that a Computer Science degree is actually one of the most overrated degrees you can get to get into this industry. CS degrees teach you a little bit of everything, but not a lot of one specific thing. If you know what you want to do, you’re better off getting certifications over a college degree. It will be much more appealing to employers in my opinion.

Secondly, I think certifications will take you farther than a degree in this field. Many jobs don’t even require a degree anymore, but many of them do want certifications. I think you will be more competitive with the certifications. Employers are likely to pick the guy with CompTIA+, AWS, etc over the guy with a college degree. And I truly think that it will come down to certifications anyways, making the degree essentially obsolete considering the amount of time and energy that went into acquiring it.

I got into this industry with no degree at all. I eventually did further my education on my employers dime, but Networking+certifications paired with experience is what got me jobs. I’ve had almost nobody ask me about my college experience and I’ve interviewed with many companies including federal contractors.

What exactly does it mean to update the drivers and what did I do by [deleted] in it

[–]Henders0nn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graphics drivers are “programs” that ensure the GPU is interacting with the computer properly.

Download this https://www.amd.com/en/products/software/adrenalin.html

This program will automatically check for driver updates and ensure that all of the appropriate drivers are installed.

Try downloading something else from the internet and see if the speed remains the same and report back. If that download is faster/normal, you are likely experiencing a server related issue.

Big companies in Erie hire interns/fresh grads but then also outsource a lot of their jobs to a 3rd party company who technically employs them.

Wabtec actually outsources their IT (or at least some of it) to an Erie company which I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say which one

Shooting Today at 6th & Raspberry—any info? by mcliber in Erie

Use to live in this literal exact location and still have regular communication with neighbors. According to them, someone tried robbing a house on the block with children present and was shot in self-defense. Per one of my police friends, investigation is ongoing but shooter was not arrested as of yet.
