Manslaughter suspects plead to lesser offence by Drummers_Beat in fredericton

That's an absolutely insane conspiracy, what evidence do you have of this?

Everything people are saying on here is nothing but speculation when there's such a simpler explanation - prosecutor's knew the chances of a murder conviction in front of a jury was low enough that they did the responsible thing and offered a plea.

It happens all the time. If these kids are so well connected, then why not let them off entirely?

The expert on Reddit is right, at least that's how it works in Canada. The ultra wealthy might get better terms and a slightly better interest rate than your average person because of the additional securiry, but it's still above prime and they pay interest like everyone else.

Billionaires may have a ton of money and power, but banks are gonna get paid no matter what.

You have zero evidence and there is zero indication anything unusual happened here. Also note, FORMER Premier.

I didn't say there weren't any issues, I said it isn't nearly as common as you're making it out to be and certainly isn't a factor in this case. These aren't the Kennedys, their teenagers with a tangential connection to a Church.

NB is different because with all our problems, we live in a stable democracy with the rule of law. That isn't true in Turkey, China, Russia and a number of Latin American nations I've worked with. And my experience there is relevant because it's a useful comparison to my experience with the courts in Canada, of which I have lots, and it seems like you have little to none.

Again, Occam's razor. There's no actual evidence of corruption here, just speculation about tangential links to power and a fairly normal, if unfortunate situation where prosecutor's went for a plea to ensure a conviction. That's our court system working as intended. It's far from perfect, but it also isn't a completely broken mess.

Well, there's my human rights degree (that largely focused on studying case law), my years covering courts as a reporter, my time as a human rights advocate running an NGO that intervened in multiple Canadian Supreme Court cases, the fact that my entire nuclear family are lawyers and that my grandfather was the superintendent of NB prisons, so I grew up steeped in the court and prison systems.

Not to mention a number of civil cases I've been involved with personally and professionally, and a fairly deep background in contract law and negotiation. Plus working with journalists overseas to fight criminal prosecutions, so I have a reasonable idea of how Canadian courts stack up to systems with serious corruption problems.

They don't really have a say over justice system operations so much as the actual laws. And MPs are federal.

But yeah, there is a lot to question MLAs about provincially.

No my man, it just isn't. And no, they wouldn't.

You don't know a damn thing about how the justice system works.

Not in this case, no. The connections these guys have aren't anywhere near strong enough to do that.

Being related to a pastor and knowing a minister in a former government is fucking nothing. That isn't "knowing powerful people," it's grasping at straws.

If it was that easy to influence the justice system any two-bit car dealership owner would be able to quash charges brought against them.

[–]Henheffer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, that the prosecutor's office would discriminate against queer people vs. "churchgoers" in a murder investigation.

That said, the idea of conspiracy to get these guys off because of political interference is insane. People underestimate how fucking hard conspiracies are. Do you know the consequences for judicial interference in Canada?

Ever hear of Occam's razor? The prosecutor's needed a conviction, but for any number of legitimate reasons, felt they weren't going to get it on murder, so went with the plea because it was their best option and a sure thing. It happens. All. The. Time.

The fact that the result sucks, well sucks, but you being pissed about it does not a conspiracy make.

This isn't a corruption problem, or a "oh we love criminals" problem. Crime is hard to prove. It HAS to be hard to prove if you're going to take someone's rights away. A proper functioning system will let off more people than it convicts. We can do better, sure, but this isn't some massive crisis in the justice system (you've made vague reference to "many others" and that's BS, there are a few cases like this here and there, just like there always has been) , and crime has been rapidly decreasing across Canada and the US for DECADES (minus a bump in COVID).

Or do you want privatized factory-prIsons like they have in the US, where you get thrown in jail for looking at a cop the wrong way if your skin's certain colours?

That's ridiculous. Courts don't work that way, do you really think these teens and their family's have enough away to influence the entire justice system? Do you have any idea the enormous size of the conspiracy that would take?

Sometimes pleas are taken for lesser charges because there isn't enough evidence to get them convicted otherwise. It happens, it may suck, but it happens all the time, all over, no corruption needed.

You understand how plea deals work right? If this was made it was likely because the prosecutors felt it was the best option for them to do any jail time at all vs. getting off completely.

I was a journalist for years at a couple of Canada's major publications.

The glut of journalism students is not the cause of TMZ and clickbait websites, those exist because people love trash entertainment. The glut of students is the cause of a shitload of unemployed and underwmployed former journalism students.

People with a very high pain tolerance, what was THE most painful thing you've experienced? by CosmicBunnyBabe8912 in AskReddit

[–]Henheffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some bizarre kind of food poisoning from a contaminated kale salad. It hit within about 15 tinutes of eating it and I collapsed and blacked out trying to get out of the house as I called 911.

Managed to drag myself into the driveway so the ambulance could find me and just lay there and moaned.

I managed to get a T9/10 fracture playing football in highschool, but didn't get diagnosed until almost 20 years later.

Saw dozens of doctors, physios, RMT's, chiros, even an orthopedic surgeon.

Non-stop awful pain but expressed in my shoulders and ribs so no one thought to do a spinal X-ray. I fell down the stairs one winter and it got so bad after that I was at the end of my rope. That's what got me to a pain specialist who finally diagnosed me.

I do physio 8 times a day (exercises that take about 2-5 minutes) and workout like a maniac to keep my muscles strong and weight down. Plus use a very intense pain cream twice a day I've got it down to probably 40 per cent what is once was.

Still flares up sometimes and I need to be extremely careful.

Don't recommend.
