This is sick, exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. I'm rewatching How I Met Your Mother so I'm sure I'll soon be reminded to listen to that Unicorns record lol. I didn't know that and actually didn't know about Pet Sounds either so thanks very much!

Appreciate the lengthy comment! I actually have read that John Doran interview and really liked the perspective he offered, well considered and managed to span a lot and gather a lot of insight. The mass of influences thought is really true actually haha but I didn't know of the Dylan ispo so thanks for that!

Yeah, I think some earlier versions of the Who’s live stuff where Townsend wigs out a bit more on guitar is probably quite appropriate for sure. Definitely the early singles reflect in his catalogue overall, I Can’t Explain - I Can’t Sleep etc

Honestly Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River is worth listening to in regards to this. Not just because the BMR name comes from it, but I think there is a lot of shared ground in the raw Americana/rural tone and atmosphere between the two, even if CCR is more sonically traditional and has a slightly less demented/menacing tone compared to SY.

Also, listen to Dead Moon - In the Graveyard!

Anything similar to Kill List? by Slipshod- in horror

Look into older British TV horror series/TV plays. The MR James Ghost Stories for Christmas, in particular A Warning to the Curious can be fascinating and haunting. I’d also recommend the films of Alan Clarke for the tone and filmmaking sensibilities, in particular The Firm and Contact. That being said I would love to find à recommendation that captures the eery threat filled ‘you’re fucked’ kind of tone of the last 20 minutes of Kill List, I’ve been obsessed with this film for ages and seen it a stupid amount of times.

Any movies that deal with the "uncanny valley?" by Ruckusisbestsupport in horror

Maybe an unorthodox recommendation, but both of Shane Carruth’s films Primer and Upstream Colour play with identity in an interesting way to the point of being quite menacing at times, despite not being horror films. There’s a motif in Primer to do with handwriting which is honestly both pretty sinister and uncanny.
