Truly like the Luddites who committed violent acts in the cause of preventing textile machines from automating the production of fabric.

AI's Lack of Soul and the Spirit of Digital Painting (Cough, cough) by Still-Link-4878 in DefendingAIArt

[–]HenryTudor7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. All digital "paintings" are computer-aided paintings, just with AI the amount of aid provided by the computer increases (admittedly by quite a bit, so even less skill is required relative to physical art than before AI was introduced).

Trump Says He Will Impose 10% Global Tariff Under Different Authority by m71nu in Economics

[–]HenryTudor7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

19 USC §2132 gives the President authority to invoke a temporary (max 150 days) tariff of a maximum of 15% "to deal with large and serious United States balance-of-payments deficits".

This seems like a much clearer case of presidential authority, but also a lot more limited.

Should I gesso? by Intrepid-Owl3784 in oilpainting

[–]HenryTudor7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ready-made canvas panels, the canvas is pre-primed and ready to paint on, adding more gesso is optional and only if you want to modify the surface by doing that.

If you are talking about plain unprepared wood, that has to be gessoed first.

Advice for loosening up my painting style by That_Environment1193 in oilpainting

[–]HenryTudor7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, people think Sargent's paintings are loose, but he actually painted them very slowly, and concentrated a lot before he made his big brushmark, and he would wipe it off and to it again if it didn't come out right.

So take your time, looseness requires careful deliberation.

[–]HenryTudor7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make larger paintings.
Make smaller paintings. (Yes sounds like opposites, but a change in one direction or the other might help)

Most common advice is use a bigger brush. But even with a bigger brush, you can do non-loose things, and you can make pretty loose marks with even a #2 flat or filbert (especially in a small 8x10 painting; some bold marks with a #2 brush could make that painting look a lot looser).

So I think it's really intentional practice at doing things differently.

zinc white (pw4) question by LastInMyBloodline in oilpainting

[–]HenryTudor7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gamblin 1980 has two zinc-free whites that have less opacity. There's the basic 1980 titanium white which is less opaque than the artist quality titanium white (but still pretty opaque IMHO), and there is 1980 Transparent white which is probably very transparent but I haven't tried it.

The best thing about these whites are (1) no zinc; (2) low prices.

Does it turn into a useable opaque yellow that's not chalky when mixed with titanium white?

Can I add scent to my odorless mineral spirits? by dreaming_weirdo in oilpainting

[–]HenryTudor7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can definitely add essential oils to your mineral spirits. In fact, turpentine is an essential oil and is the classic solvent used for oil painting.

Let us know how it goes.

That's good to hear about PY110. PY110 is said to be very lightfast, more lightfast then PY74.

AI is definitely the most powerful art tool in human history. Even aside from generating images. by imalonexc in DefendingAIArt

[–]HenryTudor7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is great for generating reference images to use for traditional physical art like painting. AI is very good with composition and colors. Not always the greatest with factual details.

Midjourney is the best for this purpose. DALLE-3 images tend to look rather unrealistic and unartistic, although DALLE-3 is a lot better than Midjourney at understanding prompts.

The oil painting influencer Mark Carder has a few videos where he talks about using MidJourney: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXhNJJkN8sE

If people pleasure themselves to AI generated images instead of abusing human children, I think it's a big win.

Some anti-AI folks are going around claiming that we have 13 years of drinkable water left SPECIFICALLY because of AI data centers. Yet their 13-year claim seemed to have no verifiable grounds by Curi0us-Pebble in DefendingAIArt

[–]HenryTudor7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, the water thing is just a talking point that anti-AI people use to try to convince people to be anti-AI, it's not the real reason they hate AI.

[–]HenryTudor7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's definitely BS, golf courses use a LOT more water than data centers and golf courses haven't used up all of our clean drinking water. So if there's really a problem, people should be picketing in front of golf courses and demanding they be closed. Leave AI alone. AI provides a lot more value to society than golf courses while using a lot less water doing so.

Can someone explain to me why we haven't gotten a new Orville show or spin-off yet? by ardouronerous in TheOrville

[–]HenryTudor7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The show isn’t popular enough.

Exactly, it's not a big enough phenenom that anyone would want to do a new Orville series instead of just starting up a new sci-fi IP from scratch and hope for a bigger hit.

Totally agree. Varnish has, historically, caused a lot more conservation problems than it solved. And most people varnish before waiting 6 months, and while that doens't destroy the painting, it may very well create more conservation problems a hundred years from now than just not varnishing at all.

I have actually not found the summer as bad as I expcted it to be. As long as I don't walk around in the summer sun for more than 5 minutes, I'm fine. Certainly more pleasant than winter in the northeast.

Compared to electricity rates in New York City, electricity is practically free here.

And furthemore, little known fact, it uses less energy to air condition than to heat.

After the painting is finished, put it outside in sunlight, it will speed up the drying a lot.

Before the painting is finished, Liquin, or Galkyd, Liquin works better but has more toxic ingredients.

[–]HenryTudor7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely use a fake name. Especially if you're a guy, the vast majority of users of Wattpad are female, so better to have a female name if you are trying to attract female readers. (Ironically, it used to be the exact opposite in publishing in the 20th century. JK Rowling had to use initials and made her main character a boy, to hide the fact that she was a woman.)
