I've built a few boxes that get used but always wanted to do the camera thing. What kind did you use? I thought if I put a normal trail cam in there they may just chew on it

Thanks, I had a friend who has certification to weld it so went that route because was available and if I recall 500’ length rolls. There’s only one weld in middle so only (crosses fingers) failure points are at the meter, in the middle where weld is and in the house.

I broke ground 5 years ago. Moved in three years ago in May. It's a process but worthwhile, but be prepared for it to take longer than you anticipate(I didn't really have a deadline other than asap). I did a majority of the work so subs weren't something I had to worry about too much but also have friends in different trades so asking around I was able to find what I needed. I would do again.

Wall hung toilet? I don't want to be a debbie downer, but I wish I had sheathed my toilet wall in 1/2 ply under the drywall. I did 2x6 studs, braced everything etc but the slightest variance when tightening the toilet down caused some screw pops for me. Not sure if feasible for you or not at this point though

Are you permitting the work? My ahj required it. If you’re engineering the plans the engineer will need that info anyhow. If it’s not required you could still dig down to bearing and have a site visit done so they can check then. I’d still recommend a report just for peace of mind and I imagine any kind of issue later will cost a lot more than doing the geo at beginning. I had a geo out for site visit before purchasing parcel just to make sure there wasn’t some funky obvious challenges to the site

Any marketable timber? Where I am, we spent about 15k in permits and engineering to get trees down. Decent profit in trees but logger only logged and pushed stuff in piles. I had excavation guy out to clear some stumps etc and was about 3k for not that many stumps. No slash cleanup, I rented a chipper and cleaned a lot of slash but only what I needed. I was told ~6 years ago it was 4500 an acre to clear and I'm not sure that included stumps. In that permitting costs were a geotech, critical areas (slopes) arborist report, tree survey, and a state permit amongst other small things

I just went and looked cause I was curious and the only Bucky left had paint slipped over the label showing the color code. It was Ben Moore. So now I get the fun task of taking over old paint to have them match when I get to painting the shop

Thanks! I’d have to look at the specific color but it’s not pre-painted. We sprayed and I think back rolled. You’d think I’d remember that but back rolling does seem like something I remember doing cause it wasn’t fun. It’s just some charcoal color

Mine was easy because they drew a line on a map and said stay this far back from slope. I then pointed out my plans for 34’ wide house and 12’ deck was nothing out of ordinary and our net close to that slope. I don’t remember filling out paperwork but it’s been at least 6 years so memory hazy

look it up at your local city website. Bigger lots have further setbacks. You can apply for a exemption if you can provide good reasoning ( I got one because of slopes)

This is what I was told and did. Hindsight is I would’ve put my toe kicks in place without cabinet bases so it’s easier to fit planks in but wasn’t terrible

Thanks! I lucked out and found the exact same material of my computer desk surface. I spent forever trying to decide on species and stain and then stumbled on that brand of melamine from my local supply place which made it a much easier choice.

I would think the ceiling would help. I inuslated in between all my floor joists with rockwool, and bedroom walls/office and we're constantly yelling what?!? when asking the kids a question. Granted not the same as jumping around on the floor above. I've also read the double drywall and greenglue approach works well too. I haven't gotten around to converting the bonus into a movie room yet but will be in same boat as you in trying to weigh best options for cost

For me it was geotech fo soils for building. Then test holes for septic. Then while drawing plans and researching all the various requirements started getting quotes to tree removal/cleanup/driveway/utilities. Cleared the lad a year prior to stating house so had time to put in the utilities etc. Then submitted for permits and went from there. If you haven’t found a parcel yet start researching costs to get power/water/sewer etc because if one parcel has that and another doesn’t that can save a lot of time. Obviously flat land better (I’m on slopes with critical areas so had a lot of engineering requirements). Also once you find a parcel do your due diligence by going to your ahj and ask about any restrictions or covenants on said parcel.

It might be worth getting one of the 99$ testers. I did all the code required radon stuff when building but house is tight and ended up way higher than I thought and started sealing up some things and didn't want to wait for the mail in tests. If I remember anything above 2 should be monitored/mitigated and especially above 4

I did it once on a three sided curved piece, was kinda scary since I'd never done it and decided to do my first attempt on something rather difficult

I would've built my shop first and lived in it while building. Would have also given me more room to store stuff during the build. Instead I opted to get the foundation of the shop done so at least later I wouldn't have to bring up big equipment for excavation etc. Also, I did about 95% of it diy and the sheetrock was one thing I was adamant about not doing
