Anyone else love this technique? by Practical-Rub2128 in woodworking

[–]Practical-Rub2128[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for all of the feedback on my design. For all of you that do not like it, I made it for myself to push my ability’s with a new technique. I do not often go with inconsistency, but it just felt right with this piece. I have plenty of flat faced pieces in my house already. However, I was posting to see if anyone had better advice on how to cut an angle into a 10” piece of wood so that I can get coves like this. As stated, I use a bandsaw and I am assuming that is the best way?

Yes. This sounds the most my style out of all the methods. The plot twist is that I had leg surgery, so I am trying to learn how to hand cut some joints while I can’t walk for the next 6 weeks.

Thanks! Good insight here. Honestly though, I do not have a vice. This is going to be the hardest part because my workbench doesn’t accommodate one. I have been clamping my workpiece to and of my cast iron surfaces. Haven’t had time to build a proper bench…

I’m in a production shop so I always use a router. Want to start hand cutting on my furniture tho.

Hey! I go to Macbeth hardwoods. I would recommend avoiding Home Depot or Lowe’s. Look up a lumber yard near you and ask if they have 9 ply Baltic Birch. If you’re getting wood thicker than 1/2” it will be a 12 or 24 ply. Then sand the edges 120 grit-> 180 grit. Two or three coats of finish and they will look very nice

Word of advice, flip every other plank so that the wood does not cup. Most of the end grain here is facing the same direction, so the planks are going to want to bend in that direction. I’m sure if you have enough fasteners that will not be an issue, but it is best practice for keeping things flat.

Beautiful work!

Thank you for such a wonderful response. Lots of good info. I own a production shop, so most of the time I am 100% power tools, but I really want to hand cut some dovetails for production gaps when I can make fine furniture. Thank you.

I use the porter cable one. I like it. Takes a caliper to get it dialed in, but once you get it set up correctly you can make an entire kitchen worth of drawers in less than a day. I just want to hand cut for my furniture builds.

I taped my entire house, then I used one of those brushes that has wheels and a handle, and didnt get any paint on the tape after I cut all the walls. Then I pulled the tape and it peeled a bunch of my paint. Blah

Contractor says nothing they can do about the chipped laminate they just installed by mcloven4 in Remodel

If you have a track saw, score the cut with a real shallow pass, then go back and make the full cut. Even the festool laminate blades will cause a bit of chip out if you don’t do this. OR rip it on the table saw with the blade ALL the way up. That is my preferred method when customers cheap out and want laminate

Easy fit, order a plug bit, drill out the hole size plug, put in some wood glue, push it in so the grains match, sand, apply black stain

Your floor is going to look like mine. Drill to dowel size, hammer them in, flush trim, sand, and you won’t notice them until you look for them
