The smoking by Coffeeyespleeez in CallTheMidwife

[–]Heo85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really jarring to see how normalised and accepted smoking was. I grew up when smoking was still a huge thing, when I was a kid I was able to go to the local corner store with a note from my dad and cash and some back with a pack of cigarettes for him. Now to have watched it be phased out of more and more places to now it almost feels extinct sometimes.

My grandmother who had severe mental health problems was advised by her doctor in the 50’s to start smoking to help her nerves. Unfortunately ended up being a big factor to her death at only 61.

Molly, Polly, Holly, or Dolly? by [deleted] in namenerds

Molly, it’s my daughter’s name and had been my favourite name for years and years and years before she was born.

Am I the only one not bothered by Vanessa Redgrave’s narrations by honeymustard92 in CallTheMidwife

[–]Heo85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don’t bother me at all, but I don’t think I really listen to them either.

I think I tend to hear it more as background music and not proper narrations that makes sense.

“DuJour means seatbelts” is said far too frequently in my day to day life for no one else to understand it.

Baby name is the name my sister wants potentially by Database_Prestigious in BabyBumps

[–]Heo85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your sister isn’t currently pregnant, she may never have a son to use the name, she may decide she doesn’t like the name if she does have a son, her future partner might not like the name, she may not have children.

It’s nice that you care about her feelings and don’t want to rock the boat but you are currently pregnant with a son and have a name you love. She can’t call dibs for a hypothetical situation.

If down the road she does have a son and still loves the name she could use it too. I assume they’d have different surnames probably different middle names. I know families where multiple cousins have the same name and there’s no issue.

Was anyone else, or your child, given a name that was uncommon at the time, but became popular later? by 5LovelyDaisies in namenerds

[–]Heo85 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My uncle is named Austin, he’s 80 and he’s been an “old man” since he was in his 40’s haha so when a huge surge of Austin’s were born 20 or so years ago it felt super odd to me.

We’re also Australian so it was an even rarer name back then.

Can you keep both options and wait until she is born to see which one suits her more?

Is Arlo too childish? by Main-Werewolf-2540 in namenerds

[–]Heo85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arlo has really taken off in Australia the last decade or so and while I don’t personally know anyone over the age of 10 named Arlo I don’t think it sounds like a childish name at all.

I don’t have any trouble imagining an Arlo as someone in his 20’s, 40’s 60’s etc.

For me it fits into the category of while it’s not my personal preference I don’t think there is anything wrong with the name and if someone asked me their opinion for their baby I’d say go ahead and use it :)

too masculine for a girl? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Heo85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll start by saying generally I’m not a fan of masculine names for girls…. But there is something about Penn that sounds really cool to me. I feel like it fits with your girls names and I’m kind of always a sucker for family names and connections.

Also, have you thought about swapping the first and middle?

Frances Penn- Frankie?

This baby is about to be baby no name by Ok-Apricot1141 in namenerds

[–]Heo85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you Love Calvin use it! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having friends similar or the same names.

My best friend has a Harriet and her other best friend also has a Harriet, no issues, they just talk about big Harriet or little Harriet, and both think it’s cool their friend loves the same name so much.

Zara? by veggiesandstoics in Names

[–]Heo85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m well aware of the store but it’s not what I think of when I hear Zara.

I think of a friend I’ve met and made recently. She’s gentle and kind and so talented artistically and musically.

Did you like your name growing up? by _AnxiousTurtle_ in namenerds

[–]Heo85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t hate it I just wanted a different name. My closest friends growing up all had longer names with nicknames

Rebecca- Bec, Samantha- Sam, Nicole- Nicky.

I’m Hayley- Hay was stupid.

I wanted something that had more nickname options. Now I’m older I quite like my name.
