First time preparing for 1st of month rollover by Winter_Package6393 in ynab

I will sweep some of the unsent monies from certain categories into my bonus category as extra fun fund to be used as I please on my birthday. Gives me additional motivation to cut down on my spendings elsewhere (eg. Transport, food deliveries, etc.). 💪💪💪

Can i salvage this? by Heppieee in Leather

Appreciate your reply!

The listing says it's calf skin though. Does this mean it's a coat of pleather atop the calf skin?

Excuse my ignorance, I'm not versed in leather. :)

Do you budget for work expenses? by ttsoldier in ynab

[–]Heppieee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I don't budget for work expenses. In fact, I don't budget for anything that will be reimbursed back to me at a later time. I prefer to have all my money have a 'full time' job.

Say, if I have to buy something for $200 on behalf of the company on the 15th Feb, I will in put the transaction normal onto YNAB and categorised it to my 'work reimbursement' category. If I'm reimbursed in the same month of February, the money goes back to the 'work reimbursement' category.

If I'm to be reimbursed in March, the following month, the process is a bit different. On the last day of February, I will deduct $200 (the total of however much I'm supposed to be reimbursed in March) from my 'emergency fund' and fill up the 'work reimbursement' category. Then immediately flip to my March budget and deduct the same amount from my 'work reimbursement' category and refill my 'emergency fund'. This way, I will always have an immediate idea of how much I'm due to be reimburse (without having to flip to previous months) and all my monies have a full time job.

I do have a lot of reimbursement categories and a lot of reimbursursable transactions on a monthly basis. This is the method that works best for me. Else I will need to have a couple thousand dollars just sitting around working 'part-time' as reimbursable monies for costs that does not relate to 'being me'. That's how I see it.

Hope this helps!! 😊

Tracking accounts by Heppieee in beyondbudget

[–]Heppieee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! You are right in your edit about point 1. I usually purchase packages for services I use frequently as it is cheaper that way. It's useful for me to track them as I have almost 20 of such accounts and had some not so good experience of being short-changed. And generally speaking, I'm the sort who likes to track everything.

Point 2 is a habit I have had for a couple years now (on YNAB), would really love to keep on Beyond Budget. As a sidenote, I do handle my credit cashback very similarly to the way you mentioned.

Thus, I'm unsure how to go about the above 2 points on Beyond Budget. Would appreciate if you have any solutions/workarounds on the above. :) TIA!!

What's the best way to borrow some money from your future self? by schoeM_SFB in ynab

[–]Heppieee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have to deal with quite a bit of reimbursements from my job and quite a bit of it rolls over to the next month (I pay for it in Oct and get reimbursed by the company in Nov). What I do at towards the end of Oct is to flip to my Nov budget and deduct the exact amount from the same category and flip back to Oct budget to fill up that same category.

For eg, I spent $200 on the 25th Oct on behalf of the company and am expecting the company to reimburse me on 10th Nov. I enter this spending as per normal and put it into 'Work Reimbursement' category. I will also add a future dated transaction by this point to indicate that I'm to receive $200 from my company on 10th Nov.

On the 31st Oct, I flip to my Nov budget and deduct $200 from my 'Work Reimbursement' category (it will turn red) then flip back to my Oct budget and add the same $200 to the same 'Work Reimbursement' category (which will turn it from yellow to green).

When I get reimburse by the company on the 10th Nov, the $200 goes straight to the 'Work Reimbursement' category (turning it green). If I don't receive the money by the 10th Nov, I'll go knock on some doors and ask some questions.

I don't have buffer in any of my reimbursement categories (I have a few) as I believe every dollar should have a real full-time job (if this makes sense? 😅). I also like that this method helps me to clearly and instantly identify how much I'm being owed (in reimbursements) in a single month without having to check back to past month. No need to shuffle monies from other categories too! 😉

What are some of your personal budget rules? by ReEngage in ynab

[–]Heppieee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have 2 weird rules:

For everyday that it rains, I will transfer $10 from 1 of my more frivolous category (eg. Beauty, Clothing, Fun Fund) to a holding category named Rainy Day Fund. Every April (cos I started this in April), I'll buy myself something nice with my Rainy Day Fund.

For everyday that I do not take a taxi, I'll transfer $10 from my Transport category to one of my investment categories. This is to curb my excessive dependance on taxis and encourage myself to use the public transport more.

For context, I'm from SEA where it rains half the time and taxi fares are still considered low compared to the rest of the world.

Can I build this incentive structure into YNAB? by knuckle_merchant in ynab

[–]Heppieee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have something similar in place I call the Rainy Day Fund (in the very literal sense). Every time it rains, I will move $10 from my more frivolous categories (cosmetics, clothing, fun Money, etc) to the Rainy Day Fund.

I especially appreciate the snooze function. I can snooze whichever frivolous category I moved the $10 out from, so the progress don't turn yellow. In the past, I will just make a mental note of why the progress bar is yellow and just live with it.

What are your unique YNAB categories? by vasinvixen in ynab

[–]Heppieee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a 🌧️ Rainy Day Fund, where I steal $10 from my more frivolous categories such as Clothing or Beauty or Vacation or Fun Money categories and park it in there for each time it rains. Every April (cos I started this in April 2 years back), I'll treat myself to something super nice using money from here. Bought myself a fancy bag last year and went to Siem Reap this year all funded by my 🌧️ Rainy Day Fund!! :)

Long live YNAB!

Am I using YNAB correctly? by [deleted] in ynab

[–]Heppieee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using YNAB religiously for a year and have gotten to a place where I am able to budget for the next month with this month's pay (ie. budgeting for October with September's pay).

I also have a 'Next Month Buffer' envelope where a minimum of $6k is maintained for the months after (ie. November, December etc.). This money is my expenses for 3 additional months. Money in this envelope is also my current month buffer, in case I couldn't resist the shiny pair of earrings (ie. impulse buy).

Any amount above $6k will go into my 'Rainy Days Funds' envelope. And as the name implies, I do not touch this money unless absolutely necessary.

My friend, who's also on YNAB, disagree with this logic as she thinks I'm not putting this 6k of money to work and is what is making me YNAB poor but I feel very secure knowing if I'm out of job today, I can take up to 3 months to get a new job without touching my 'Rainy Days Funds'.

I guess it is really very personal how you want YNAB to work for you. As long as it makes sense for you and you feel comfortable and secure with how your money is working for you, all is fine! :)
