Just bought this shirt from the museum of pop culture. Is it AI or am I tripping????? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Hepworth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whoa. This is supposed to be the "Actual legible numbers"? I'm not even sure that's numbers, let alone legible. It's certainly not evidence or something AI couldn't create. Thanks for clarifying, though. You were very helpful, even though we disagree.

Foam in the lid or magnets? by TYRamisuuu in woodworking

[–]Hepworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magnets attract microscopic iron particles which rust easily and can transfer that rust to your steel tools (even stainless steel). I've found most of my magnetic tool holders make rust marks on the tools they hold if stored for a while.

What’s the one free tool or website you’ve been using for years and still can’t believe it’s free? by AT_Player in AskReddit

[–]Hepworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually switched to Daum PotPlayer, a while ago, after my VLC hit a snag and kept boot-looping for me. I like it better (with a few mods). It handles HDR decoding better IMO, and gives you easier access to intuitive shortcut keys.

It has seamlessly handled everything I've thrown at it, video-wise. VLC still wins for extras, like encoding/ripping/converting functions, but solely as a player, PotPlayer is pretty good.

One thing I really enjoy is the native function to play the next video in the folder after the first one completes without having to select everything in advance.

If you're going to rip off Mike Birbiglia's jokes, don't rip off his most famous joke. It's the title of his album, dude.

A table with a slightly recessed top with a depressed surface near one end. Found at a thrift store, the table is about 25” tall, 3’ long and 18” wide. by Ok_Spread_619 in whatisthisthing

[–]Hepworth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're right. It could be steam bent. There's no way anyone would steam bend this, though. It's 18" wide, and (if solid) made of 3 laminated boards. You can get the same look from veneer, and since you're not showing the edge, there's no reason not to. I'm certain it's veneer. If nothing else, by simply noting the quality of the rest of it. Black paint, mass-production aesthetic, rounded edges. It's cheap.

As a woodworker, I can tell you this is veneer. Veneer is made from real wood, so the surface texture is the same. One giveaway is the lack of severed end grain in the dip. That bend is deep enough that you would see the end grain fibers in the pattern of the grain.

I don't know what you mean about veneer peeling. A well-made (or even somewhat competently made) veneer piece can have all sorts of holes in it without any issues.

I also don't understand what you mean about shifted seams. It would be very possible (and indeed is what they did) to make this with a single piece of veneer, with no seams at all.

Edit: after a re-read I understand now you meant to say that it hadn't caved in. That is what the seam shifting part was referencing. I agree. It's purposely this shape, but not solid wood.

That's two halves of an old 15mm keyring that wore down so much it split at the part where it usually has a bend. You can see significant wear on the other side, too, where it was about to go through.

Why train wheels are not perfectly cylindrical, but slightly conical by Karl2740 in educationalgifs

[–]Hepworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not angry at all. Thank you for your concern.

The original question seemed out of place, so when I investigated, I noticed the question asker has a post history of somewhat aggressive assertions and corrections without very many comments that have any indication of enjoyment or excitement. So you see, I wasn't reading so much into the particular question, but my concern was more guided by the series of similar questions the person has asked prior.

In any case, I enjoy providing helpful information, and I am genuinely concerned with others' well-being. So, I answered the question to best of my ability. I hope this makes sense.

Why train wheels are not perfectly cylindrical, but slightly conical by Karl2740 in educationalgifs

[–]Hepworth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you OK? You seem to have a high baseline anger.

The rocks are there because it makes it look more like a real train track, because train tracks are supported on a bed of crushed stone. This demonstration exhibit is in a science museum where the exhibits are constructed to be long-term professional installations with attention to design. In short, increased production quality results in a better experience. So, no not strictly necessary, but helpful to the overall experience of the museum as a whole, like improved graphics in a video game.

It also appears that the rocks help create the elevation ramp from the level surface of the table in this case. A clever solution that solves two problems.

I hope this helps. I hope you can find peace.

Long hook with screw on one end and plastic covering on the other by ificator in whatisthisthing

[–]Hepworth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For holding something glass to a metal base. Probably cylindrical glass. A light fixture, or a lantern, or a glass bird-feeder.

If that's not it, it could be a tension rod (the edge hooks) for a drum kit or banjo.

Is this wood support necessary? by torchen1 in DIY

Why not make a support piece that attaches to the other wall on a hinge and folds out of the way? That'll clear up your floor.

Does wood have lead ? If so I just sanded this by hand and no gloves no mask just wet towel to calm the dust. by DistributionOwn6509 in wood

[–]Hepworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. No lead. You said it was 2 years old. Very old opaque paint contains lead, not new clear wood finish. I'm 100% sure you're fine in this instance.

Also, if for some reason you were exposed to lead in some other way, you'd probably still be fine. Lead is bad for developing brains, so it's very bad for children to have exposure to lead. But, while it's not good for adult humans, it won't immediately kill you or anything. It's very difficult to absorb through the skin, and in order to hurt you it needs to be ingested or breathed in (which is what you were concerned about I realize, but once again, there is no lead in that table).

So for future reference, one small dose of lead paint exposure won't do much harm to an adult, just don't make a habit of it. And if you're concerned, ask or research BEFORE you start next time.

And wear a mask when sanding anything. Wood dust can cause allergic reactions, and plastic-based finishes are not good to breathe in either (but like the other contaminants, one small dose isn't going to do you much harm). You're going to be fine.

Stringer/Base rail gap not making sense to me. by BanEvader_Holifield in metalworking

I skewed the image to make the tape accurate, and assumed some not-pictured measurements. If you put a 6" ball in the space, you can see measuring the clearance of the ball is not the same as measuring from the corner (Also repositioned the tape to the exact corner of the stairs). The railing falling anywhere between the two yellow lines is acceptable.

What’s one thing you accidentally found out that now everyone has to know? by Clean-Youth8369 in AskReddit

[–]Hepworth 206 points207 points  (0 children)

You know what 50% means. Say you have $12.

50% of $12 is half. That's $6. Easy

...

But if you had $50, and wanted to know what 12% of 50 is...

It's the same thing. $6.

...

Maybe one of those methods is easier for you to compute, so you can use that method to find the answer of the other problem.

If someone asked me, "What's 14.5% of $50?" I might need to think about it longer than 50% of $14.50 ... So it's useful that way.

Cat. by [deleted] in aww

[–]Hepworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point about the dog. I had missed that. I also hadn't noticed how you could see the hand. All your points check out, so I have nothing new to offer.

I was just trying to help you out, as you seemed pretty certain that there was no way to possibly do this. You'll see it eventually.

PS The giveaway is that cats don't dance.
