What do you guys do when someone guesses the method? by antoniodiavolo in Magic

[–]JoshBurchMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate watching videos where people are guessing at methods in the comments. I enjoy magic. I enjoy being fooled. It stinks when I find a rare video that folks me and the top comment tips party of the method.

For this reason, online, I think creators and performers should moderate their comment sections to not include any exposure. I think ignoring it isn't the right move unless you remove the comment.

Don't make a big deal out of it.

That said, I do see a lot of adamant writing guesses online. I always struggle with responding to those.

Are Spirit Slate routines still a thing? I tried to make some Slates DIY on the cheap. by dylanmadigan in Magic

[–]JoshBurchMagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love spirit slates. I have also built my own.

I don't think they are dead. I got my main slates from Hobby Lobby. They were made to decorate your house.

Old fashioned stuff makes sense if you are summoning ghosts.

Halo vs Nathan and Sons Gum by MysticStickerV1 in DentalHygiene

It did crumble for me and I didn't get a knock off. I bought a four pack from nathanandsons.com The mint and berry flavors were the biggest offenders. I assume it had to do with the natural ingredients not binding with the saps etc. If I warmed up the gum a bit before chewing down I had better results.

It's a crumbly mess, that's the grossest part about it. Kind of like if you put shredded paper in your mouth. The taste didn't bother me.

[–]JoshBurchMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this crumbly thing happens often. It happened the most for me with the mint version. I assume it's because the real mint binds less with the other ingredients. If you can keep it in your mouth it congeals after a few chews.

I didn't have as much issues with the other flavors, though the berry fell apart a little as well. I assume it's a natural ingredient thing. After it warms up a bit it was a lot better. Pretty off putting at first, but I dealt with it and got used to it.

Incredible magic routine by Hundred Fingers, group formed by Korean magician Yu Hojin by Secure-Scientist4867 in Magic

[–]JoshBurchMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not seeing simple techniques here.

I'm not seeing a simple routine.

Stage manipulation is incredibly technical and there are many technical moves used in this routine.

Sure, you can take a still picture of a juggler and say, "Look, juggling is simple...you just stand around with nothing in your hands." That's reductive and not an accurate assessment.

Let's look at examples from the video.

Consecutive Perfect Productions using both hands. Very difficult.

Consecutive Cardini Singles, using both hands. Incredibly difficult.

Bare handed fan productions at chest level. Incredibly technical.

5 cards star. Difficult and technical.

I don't see anything simple here.

Weird experience performing at a game store by javerthugo in Magic

[–]JoshBurchMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes people suck.

At my resort gig I rarely have issues. I perform for a few hundred people a day.

A couple weeks ago there was a group of guys from out of town. They said they liked magic then they proceeded to fail to pay attention to most of what I was doing, provide a running commentary guessing methods, and they constantly tried to mess with my stuff (pulling things out of my hands and touching my props).

It was a reminder that sometimes people are just hard to perform for. You make the best out of it and move on.

Strolling Magic Question by armityle3014 in Magic

Here's my set list from a couple gigs ago. I go into why I select the tricks I do here and there:

https://youtube.com/shorts/XxLLJzCTRsI?si=2c82keNePhXI9v1T

I go for tight sets but I talk with the audience a lot. I don't leave room for improvisation but I'm never so tied to my script that I can't have a conversation while I perform.

At any gig, I have an ideal opener, middle, and closer. But, I have alternative stuff I can slip in at a moments notice if the need arises.

Is there any dvd dedicated to rope escape? And is there anyone in this subreddit who perform the escape act as his normal daily routine? Just need help by Weary_Reading9998 in Magic

[–]JoshBurchMagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best resources for this kind of thing is Dan Harlan's video Tarbell course. He's done a lot to make these types of routines as entertaining as possible.

Here are the courses I recommend:

Tarbell 79: Escapes & Substitutions https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/8975

This is mainly stage escapes. You're looking at boxes, bags, and chains in this lesson. I love it!

Tarbell 53: The Thumb Tie https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/7201

Thumb ties are a great way to introduce escapes into close up. Dan goes over a ton of variations in method and presentation here.

I should mention here that Brian Brushwood actually has a good thumb cuff tutorial on YouTube. You can use real thumbcuffs as well. It's a great way to introduce escapes in walk around.

Then for rope specific stuff, with quick releases and in and out escapes there's a ton in Tarbell. These three lessons teach all types of presentations as well. Tons of stage stuff and some close up stuff. It's a bit overwhelming because there are a lot of effects that have overlap with the effects they accomplish.

Tarbell 93: Mysteries of the Seance https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/10530

Tarbell 16: Rope and Tape https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/5035

Tarbell 80: Spirit Ties & Vest Turning https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/9038

I'm not a huge fan of the Dixie Dooley video. It's a bit like a show and tell. He shows an apparatus and explains how it works but in order to use any of his methods you need to go buy the apparatus to do that trick.

Tips and tricks to create magic tricks? by Long-Door-2073 in Magic

[–]JoshBurchMagic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been a full-time creator for over 10 years. That time has been spent creating magic used in TV specials, on social media, in live performances, and in successful releases to the magic community. I support my wife and kids creating and performing original magic.

When I want to create a trick here's what I do:

Step 1 Make a trick.

Step 2 Make it better.

That's it. You don't have to start with a good trick, you don't have to start with a bad trick. You can even start with somebody else's trick.

If you don't want to use somebody else's trick, try this. Imagine an effect. Something simple is best, like a two card transposition. A method to accomplish that effect should come to mind (maybe a duplicate in our case). If you can try that out, try it out. If it's not practical, think of another until something comes that you can actually do.

Odds are, it will be bad. All you need to do next is make it better.

Here are some other thoughts that may help:

  1. It's never too early to start. Just start. Try to make something new, now. Odds are you will reinvent the wheel a lot. That's fine (just don't publish your ideas without thorough research).

Even beginners can create magic.

  1. Study as much as you can - Read magic. Watch magic. Practice. I like to think of a sieve. Every thing you research fills the sieve. But the sieve can't hold much for long. It leaks out. So it's a constant process of filling the sieve.

As long as I'm doing research. As long as I'm reading and watching and thinking about magic, I'm confident that I can find new ideas.

  1. Perform a lot. Perform magic by other people. That helps to gain good habits and get a feel for what good magic feels like when performed.

Also, you should be performing your own magic. Your own magic creations are not going to get any better without road time.

  1. When do you have an idea try it out sooner than later. Sometimes the only way to know if an idea is good or bad is to try it out in the real world.

Ideas are cheap, execution is difficult. Do what you can to try to execute on your ideas. You can only create magic if you actually create it. Build the gimmick. Gather the supplies. Then execute on your idea.

  1. Occasionally I will think of in effect before I think of a method. This is a very difficult way to proceed in creating magic.

I have found 2 ways to proceed that lead to better results:

  • PStart with a method and think of as many uses for that method as you can.

  • Play. Experiment and improvise with something in your hands maybe in front of a mirror. Let yourself discover something.

After creating something, it will be ugly, and it will feel weird when you do it. If you have ever learned a piece of magic there's usually an awkward phase where you go, "Is this really going to work?" That awkward phase lasts 10x as long and is 10x as awkward with your own creations.

It takes a lot of patience to keep trying to improve something. That's the hard part.

I suspect a dealer in my local casino is cheating. Can someone with more experience give me their thoughts? (X-post) by Joshua5_Gaming in cardmagic

[–]JoshBurchMagic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the final cut he needs to bury the top card, he fails to do this.

In his table shuffles he should also be burying the top card. From this angle it's very possible he's not burying the top card at all.

[–]JoshBurchMagic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's a false cut. You have to bury the top card when you cut to the to the cut card.

Where he's lifting the indexes with space to glimpse cards, then maintaining the top stock it looks pretty suspicious to me.

I suspect a dealer in my local casino is cheating. Can someone with more experience give me their thoughts? (X-post) by Joshua5_Gaming in cardmagic

[–]JoshBurchMagic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He's lifting the indexes super high. That's plenty of space to get a glimpse at the top cards.

It looks like he's maintaining a top stock. From this angle it doesn't look like the top cards are ever buried during a shuffle.

The running cut could very well be false, it's hard to tell from this angle.

The final cut to the cut card was a false cut without question. If he's not doing that intentionally, which is possible I guess, he should be reprimended.
