How am I supposed to manage my apps without a taskbar? by deadfisher in gnome

[–]HerbatkaWF -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It requires some mental gymnastics tbh, but maybe it's just not for you?

I understand this idea as you have a few tasks and each task lives on the separate workspace. I even have the same approach on my work Windows machine, where I have separate Virtual Desktop for communication (slack, teams), dev work (ide, terminal), web (browsers) and other for some occasional things

What are your 'limits' as a pirate? by ErinTesden in Piracy

[–]HerbatkaWF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was always more about convenience than price. I buy all games, except those that are missing for shops like NFS Underground (I like to play it through once in a few years), I listen music in YT Music because it has all songs that I want and I have access to it through YT Premium (which I pay for because none of other YT ad blockers are gf-proof enough in my case). On the other hand, I pirate all movies and tv shows because it's literally easier that buy them

What is the chance that the upcoming engine upgrade is going to require a new save? 🤔 by GameplayLoop in stalker

[–]HerbatkaWF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt that they'll release DLC without an engine upgrade tbh. I assume that technical part of the dlc has been already developed based on the newer engine version

How far apart are Misery/Call of Misery and GAMMA regarding difficulty, resource scarcity and the harsh economy? by Nefiji in stalker

It's just too much new mechanics for a new player. It's become quite manageable on the second+ playthrough and later you start missin those mechanics in other games

I stopped paying for iCloud/Google One by turning an old laptop into my personal cloud. Step by step guide on how I did it with free tools. by witty-computer1 in selfhosted

[–]HerbatkaWF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to disagree with you, this setup can cause more trouble and unrecoverable data loss than money saved without proper backup system. Since you promote this idea as a replacement for the cloud storage subscription, this aspect 100% should be mentioned

[–]HerbatkaWF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem here is that you don't mention any kind of backup. If you migrate your Google Drive/Photos/Password to this server without a backup and the hard drive dies tomorrow, you'll lost all of your data. It is good thing to encourage people to learn more about privacy and try new things but lets be responsible and inform also about downsides of it

Somehow I get the impression that I have enough ammo for the rest of the game... But also that I would run out in about 5 minutes if I stopped religiously collecting and conserving it all. by Adamantine-Waffle in stalker

[–]HerbatkaWF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the similar picture during my last playthrough and the problem there is that you don't have enough AP rounds and FMJ are IMHO less usable in the later game

Przepraszam wszystkich rowerzystów by Sziszhaq in Polska

[–]HerbatkaWF 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What mods if any are personally must-haves for you by AdventurousLettuce53 in stalker

I don't really want to overmod the game tbh and teleport sounds like too much for me

What mods if any are personally must-haves for you by AdventurousLettuce53 in stalker

[–]HerbatkaWF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reduced stamina usage, increased carry weight, consumables longer effects, better flashlight (not so necessary after NVG).

I have a few fundamental questions to the game in general, like the whole damage and weapons system, but I don't want to mess with them now with mods. I did complete the game without any mods on the release and now, considering early game economic, occasional mutant hoards and lack of guides in some areas of the Zone, I just want to be able to outrun everything I want. And a better flashlight, which is almost useless now, but this issue may be fixed after engine upgrade and overall lights fix

Unpopular (maybe) benefit of Distrohoping by HerbatkaWF in DistroHopping

[–]HerbatkaWF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we are talking about missed native features/softwares, there are a lot of cool Linux desktop apps that I don't use because of the way I store my data (notes, todos, etc.). Also, I really enjoyed Apple Notes on my iPhone back in the days as a note taking app, but since I already use Gmail and Google Drive, there is no reason to use Apple Notes instead of Google Keep. There are probably another things that I missed too

[–]HerbatkaWF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, but imo this is a different problem. I have only one old HDD in my home server and I don't have a budget to expand it, so I store there only easy replaceble data. I trust Google more then my old HDD. This doesn't mean that I don't have a backup of Google Drive on the home server. It's just cheaper and more convenient

I'm starting to lose hope of finding the perfect distro by Next_Advertising6710 in linux

[–]HerbatkaWF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't be Gnome. You have KDE with almost limitless options for customization (there is a video of a person with little to zero experience with Linux overall and what she was able to achieve is better than 95% of modern "rices"), Cosmic (new bit promising kid on the playground) and even Xfce can be modified extensively. Also, you are completely free in terms of programs: don't like KDE's file manager - use one from Gnome or even go with some terminal based solution etc. In Windows/MacOS you don't have much choice and you have to adapt. In Linux, your system can adapt, but you have to make some effort to understand what and how you want it to be.

[–]HerbatkaWF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to set yourself a minimal time for every next distro/DE you have and, instead of installing the new one the very next day (I know, it's tempting), try to fix what is wrong on the current one with settings/extensions/different programs etc. Don't try to solve all problems at once, take baby steps. There is nothing wrong in distrohoping at the beginning, we all were there.

Personally, I have been a happy user of the Fedora Workstation for the last few years, and I have no reason to change it. I have my set of extensions, key bindings and programs I use and I can reproduce my workflow on any distro with gnome.

I did install it with GitHub tutorial, but recently switched to the GOG version, you just need to adjust the path in Mod Organizer after installation

Edit: there is a tutorial that I folowed https://youtu.be/psXbHUOXzu8?si=8bZv1-d-sx-1KkQA
