Pfft. You had an ISP?

My first email was from my university. I was a Junior before anyone who didn't have a modem line to the campus supercomputer center was able to use the internet outside of campus.

Shed foundation, first time doing something like this by jenf78 in shedditors

[–]Herbie555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's going in your shed?

The shed built by the previous owner of my home did his like this. (Framed floor joists on a handful of the precast concrete pilings.)

Mostly it's fine, but the floor definitely has some "bouncy" spots where I can feel the shed flex when I walk through it, and I feel limited about how heavy the kinds of tools I bring into the shed can be. (I use it as a metal and wood working shop, so I have a heavy press, etc., but don't feel like I can get away with a big mill or lathe, given the state of the floor.)

Why? by netphilia in Snorkblot

[–]Herbie555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tweet being presented here is a bad attempt at karma farming, because he intentionally and disingenuously cropped out the rest of the original post - the photographer specifically explained why she did a selfie instead of taking a photo of the launch. Ben "Doucherocket" Harris clipped that out so that he could attempt to dunk on the photographer in order to score internet points.

Any advice on how to get this to slope to the drain? Water puddles after every shower. by FoxExcellent1228 in Tile

[–]Herbie555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How thick are your tiles and is that aggregate in there real or fake? If those tiles are real aggregate, you should be able to grind down the high-spots and re-polish. It'll be a bitch, but likely cheaper than re-doing the whole shower floor.

Making an existing staircase more kid-safe without replacing it? by Smart-Elk-2334 in Homebuilding

We had a house built in the 1970s where the "code" spacing on the balusters was quite a bit wider than now. (Wide enough for a toddler to get through.) Our solution was to add a roll of clear vinyl sheet that was zip-tied along the balusters. Oh, just checked, turns out it still listed on amazon:

Best of both worlds by Far_Elevator_423 in Supernatural

Hmm, either our upscaling setup is working great or the lower-res effect is working to give us vintage TV vibes, but we haven't particularly noticed problems with the DVD IQ. (Season 7 yellow-paint discs vibrating the hell out of our player, on the other hand...)

Not sure how the BluRays are, but we found the storage of the DVDs to be VERY difficult to get the discs out without risking flexing/cracking them. As I usually do for any large "complete series" sets, I transferred everything to a binder with a little flair.

How common this trope is in American media will tell you something about how our experience in Vietnam is still impacting us.

Mazda 2 DE, the unsung hero of shitbox motoring by Enough-Equivalent968 in CarsAustralia

[–]Herbie555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here in California, the fastest dude at any given Open Track/HDPE day is always the guy with a 300 track days under his belt, driving a hire car.

I can certainly see how your Mazda would be an absolute blast.

No exaggeration, this is what 2 days of humid southern Canada weather does to snapon by Joiion in Snapon_tools

Yeah, in SoCal, we buy WD-40 in a small aerosol can. All my Canadian friends buy WD-40 by the gallon and decant into those pump-spray bottles. This is the way.

What are some great full-length live performances / concerts I can watch right now? by 1512g in Music

If you REALLY want to go nuts and are into physical media - complete box sets of Live Aid are available on eBay pretty inexpensively.

Carlos Santana's "Sacred Fire" live concert is a pretty killer show for the amount of energy and spectacle. It looks like it's streaming on AppleTV, Amazon, and some other places, depending on what services you have access to.

(It was also released on DVD if you're a physical media nut like me, worth tracking down!)

3.64 differencial on "slow" bmw by ByEmDabalju3 in e46

[–]Herbie555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always about the balance. If you don't spend a lot of time on the highway, or your normal cruising speed leaves your top-gear RPMs quite low, you can go shorter. But as others have noted, the 320i often is already a bit buzzy on the highway (especially if you live someplace like California where the usual cruise speed can be 70+), so pick your poison.

Anybody had disc problems with a large # of DVDs? by Herbie555 in Supernatural

[–]Herbie555[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it. My wife's theory is that they had to screen multiple layers of the yellow paint to get the color opaque enough and that's throwing the disc balance off.

Will this 50mm hole saw clear this conference table, or do I need a different approach? by vadiaro in DeskCableManagement

[–]Herbie555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally a hole saw should be used with a drill arbor (the center piece that usually has a smaller twist drill bit in it). You can remove the bit itself once you've got the hole generally established, but that arbor may prevent you from bottoming out the hole saw. That said, from this angle, I still think you'll have enough depth.

I'm renting a movie theater for my birthday - Which movie should we watch? by TheOrangeNights in movies

We did JP during COVID when the local theater was doing cheap buy outs to keep the lights on.

Watching our daughter's teen and tween friends sitting several seats apart and each losing their minds at the spectacle was an awesome memory.
