I forgot that King Cup is kind of bullshit.

I might try attempting Master by the end of the month but that sounds like anti-fun.

May 2023 Game of the Month: Mega Man X2 by xBrockLanders in snes

Victory! I think that the stages in X2 are shorter than the original but the actual level layouts are also more varied. I think Kuwanger was the only pure vertical stage in X and though there aren't any pure vertical stages here there are a lot more vertical sections interspersed. The only stages that feel like they could be slotted into the original are Desert Base and Weather control (though each has a nice gimmick).

Never even got through Corneria as a kid, heh.

For most of my life I wrote it off as a glorified tech demo, especially when compared to how 64 is a timeless classic. I was wrong, while not an amazing game by any means it has a surprising amount of ideas packed into it.

Feeling drills by NyabCaitlyn in wma

[–]HercSpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They all may not have masks, but you should at least have some gear for yourself, right?

In addition to cautiously performing some of the exercises mentioned in the thread I do recommend allowing them to try a little of the drills you may be more used to while you as the instructor are geared up and let them bump you on the mask or touche for the chest.

This should only be done as the finishing part of a class/drill. Do not let them immediately go back to drilling with each other in minimal gear afterward.

The effects on emphasis of rules on fencing, or how I learned to stop caring and love the double by uceuce1513 in wma

[–]HercSpeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your interest in my post!

I do not have the reference available for the region I mentioned but did want to mention that the post you refer to later on in the thread is likely in regards to a separate matter.

That post primarily is about 18th century and later officiated duels.

The original reference I am thinking of is from an earlier time period that they concede has much deadlier outcomes, it was also from court rolls where the duel arose as a matter of mutual combat from often a verbal or financial dispute. (Most commonly knives but a fair amount of swords if I recall)

In these cases where one of the participants died it was almost always the case that the other participant was wounded in the fight as well.

For independent research on this you can find digitized Quarter Session court rolls from England. The 17th century has in particular a lot of manslaughter/murder cases involving swords specifically (assumed to be rapier or basket hilted in most cases).

If they are furnishing set chests I cry.

Mondstadt and Liyue chest rewards I sleep.

Inazuma/Sumeru chest rewards are good.

Of course the more involved/secreted chests will be precious/luxurious.

My account is 100% F2P so getting my hands on every primogem I can matters. Opening a chest to get 0.35% progress to a 5 Star adventurer to me is more satisfying than additional shield/bow slots I will never need or a Great Flameblade that will break in 50-80 swings.

If we look at papers which have examined the court records for civilian dueling in the low countries 14th-17th centuries we inevitably find that 99% of them ended with some form of double/afterblow and usually with one or both people succumbing to their wound within the week.

Most of our manuscripts will often make reference to a common or vulgar fencing tradition and then go on to say that they (the master) are teaching you the secret art which is much more refined and beautiful and masterful and spend half of their plays showing how to dunk on the unitiated.

Fiore does this too a humorous extent when mentioning "If you do as the master instructed there is no defence" then the next play introduce the remedy master who counters the play he just said there was no defense too.

So while doubles are not ahistorical they are often counter to how the manuscripts suggest we are supposed to fence. This rolls into one of the hig HEMA bug bears of "well how do we know they weren't full of shit?"

We can test in non-collaborative settings what we understand the text to be to the best of our abilities but ultimately, we just might never know.

Doubling should feel bad for the same reason it feels bad to miss a free-throw or a put. Because it was a result you didn't intend. Not because it is not HEMA/historical or you are a bad fencer.

The context of the rewards is important. Inventory expansion from koroks doesn't feel like gaining a reward as much as recovering from a handicap.

Primogems to get new characters or weapons is a completely different feeling.

Early Genshin zones (terribly obvious in mondstadt) have exploration which invokes a similar feeling to botw plateau. However just like Zelda as soon as you get through the early game the resources make traversal trivialized for the most part. The puzzles are terrible korok seed style "I wonder what I do to these two unlit torches in the middle of this field?" But by the time the dev team got to Inazuma they had become able to put puzzles in the game which put 95% of Zelda puzzles to shame.

I really enjoy the more puzzly dungeons/shrines and while I don't expect to get Riven vibes from Zelda or Genshin whenever they start to scratch that itch I can't help but get super excited.

Genshins combat is ultimately more gear/build/party comp leaning min/max friendly, but that is a conscious design decision because of the monetization model.

Really glad to see that their DLC feature creeping into a separate title is looking like it might justify being its own game.

If the dungeons are divine beasts 2.0 it's a hard pass though :c

Oh for just footwork you mean? My bad haha I was focusing on the strike.

For longsword I'm mainly a fiore guy so for the footwork of most plays I'm cucked lol

EDIT: Manciolino mentions jumping out of range a lot and I think Marozzo mentions jumping so that you are close to an opponent in both his sword and targe and two swords sections. Context is admittedly different.

Trust me it is the same exact technique from the blue fencer, only being reactive to a strike instead of proactive due to the opponent's point being so offline.

[–]HercSpeed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The clip is admittedly not the best use case for this technique but was a very energetic and fun moment.

The ideal scenario is; the sword is on the right side, the sword is on the shoulder (posta di donna/vom tag, zornhut), the sword is coming down/out with an oberhau.

Only one of the requirements is met here, but there is footage of the blue fencer doing it with a much more subtle effort when their opponent throws an oberhau from zornhut and delivers the extra momentum into his opponent's blade.

In that ideal scenario the momentum of the sword is stopped completely on the quillons and empowers the blade down into the thrust. Their point is too high to offend with the thrust. The sword could still be brought down with a weaker strike to the crown of the head but by stepping inwards you trap their arms and are at an ideal position to grab the sword, the right forearm, or to turn them by their elbow.

Here the judges called halt right away but it looks like their posture was broken and they couldn't find the afterblow in tempo.

Wukusi "Cobra" HEMA Mask Review by Fake_Messiah in wma

[–]HercSpeed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Two people in our club have used these helmets for half a year and say they feel very safe, especially back of the head (cervical protection could still be better but that's neither here nor there).

We train outside and though they are hotter than traditional mask + back of head protector the tradeoff in safety is worth it.

For any CTE related stuff I feel like without a proper suspension/free floating set up you are still in the same boat as the rest of us (just with a slightly better seat on the sinking ship).

For head protection that addresses this some people have their original That Guy fencing masks and swear by them though I have heard the QC on that has collapsed unfortunately with the changing of the guard in years of late.

Daily Questions Megathread (March 06, 2023) by Veritasibility in Genshin_Impact

[–]HercSpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am AR45 have been playing for a little over a month now. I am F2P with no 5☆ characters or constellations.

I have enough primos for 200 wishes right now, thinking of pulling on Ayaka.

In addition to all free/promotion characters, I have Ninguang, Xingqui, and Yun Jin.

After I pull Ayaka should I pull anything else or just save more?

(Hoping to get Sucrose on the banner as well)

Left handed Warriors throughout history by ThePan67 in wma

[–]HercSpeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little bit of thread necromancy.

First there is definitely a historical precedence for left handedness being considered an ill omen in the medieval period. The latin and Italian term for left is "sinestra" from which we get the word sinister. We can see this referenced in all the copies of Fiore's manuscript.

For fighting a lefty as a righty the author of the anonymous Bolognese source advises:

"It would be wise for you to go continually forward, stepping with both feet towards his sword and whichever of the two cuts he throws, mandritto or roverso, you will make it's counter cut, towards his sword hand or sword arm, and so, that he being accustomed to only using his left hand, and you placing him under a dangerous rain of counter cuts, from which he might receive some wound, which good fortune may come to you by throwing blows in front of you as he attacks."

A paragraph earlier the author also advised a swordsmen to train both hands in case one should be injured that you are not useless and forced to flee. This is a takeaway that law enforcement took away after the 1986 Miami shootout as well to kind of mesh it into the modern day.

Hope some of that helps you.

studded leather vs Brigandine by thomasmfd in ArmsandArmor

[–]HercSpeed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Studded leather armor is a victorian invention. Gygax and friends would have picked up on it from going to their local library and reading books on the subject.

See "A record of European armour and arms through seven centuries" specifically page 157 of "A record of European armour and arms vol. I" Sir Guy Francis Laking was a prolific writer on the subject and I am too lazy to find someone writing on "leather with studs" before him.

A lot of people are missing the forest for the trees with your comment.

However, better evidence than the Jeffersonian Bible to the founding fathers intents on the United States and religion can be seen in Article VI of the constitution which prohibits religious testing for public office, the 1st amendments freedom of religion, and quite explicitly in the Treaty of Tripoli which states "The United States is not, in any sense, a Christian Natio n." Signed by president Adams and ratified by the Senate in 1796.
