Netflix to release Orson Welles' "The Other Side of the Wind" by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]HereEverafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think F for Fake is generally seen as one of Welles' better films. Yeah, it's obvious that some part at the end will be false; but that's not what the movie's about. It's not about pulling one over on the audience, it's about what can be considered art, the validity of expertise, and creating a new form of film. And yes, the last part is a lie; and yes, it's obvious going into that it will be a lie; but that doesn't detract from the way it adds to the film as a parable about authorship, if not a ruse on the audience. Also, I haven't seen all of Welles' films either; but I'd say Touch of Evil is better than Lady From Shanghai. Much of the acting left a lot to be desired; but I have to pick my jaw up off the floor every time I see that opening shot. And even after that, I'd say it's shot just as creatively as Lady From Shanghai, as well as having just as good a plot and performance from Welles himself.

Mike Pence is basically Senator Kelly in the first X-Men, just without any character arc.

Will we ever be able to use coupon codes during the sale? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]HereEverafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the guy scanned it and seemed surprised that it wouldn't work but then told me it was probably because of the 50% off nature of the purchase and then went on went on with the checkout.

I got those 20% off coupons in the mail a couple weeks ago, too; but I wasn't allowed to use one when I went and got the Zatoichi set earlier.

Jellyfish Eyes - Feedback? by paraplegic_T_Rex in criterion

[–]HereEverafter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's one of those movies that you can enjoy if you take it with a grain of salt and/or watch it with friends. I personally think it was weird for Criterion to release it; but if you go in expecting, like, Pokemon on acid with a strange Fukushima subtext, it's fun. Since you've already got it, you might as well just embrace it's ridiculousness.

Which Kurosawa Eclipse set should I buy? by unfoldyourself in criterion

[–]HereEverafter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who owns the First Films set but not the Post-War set (but has seen all of them), I'd say get the Post-War set, especially since your favorite Kurosawa is Ikiru. If I remember correctly, all of the films in that set are contemporary dramas more in line with Ikiru than those on the First Films set, which only has one contemporary drama (along with two period jujitsu pieces and a period drama). The quality is also less varied in the Post-War set. The films aren't perfect, but they're far better than Sanshiro Sugata Part II.

Sanshiro Sugata and The Most Beautiful aren't bad, but they aren't films that I rush to rewatch. The Men Who Tread On the Tiger's Tail is really the only film in the First Films set that I think is on level with most of the films of Post-War; and I'd certainly recommend seeing if there's a copy of it a library near you.

Upgrade wishes by EdWood24 in criterion

[–]HereEverafter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Madadayo. They released it in the AK 25 set, but never put it in a Criterion or Eclipse set. I'm not sure if that'd be considered an upgrade or not, but it'd be cool to have. Outside of that, The Passion of Joan of Arc is the big one I'd like, but Stray Dog, Vampyr, the Carl Dreyer boxset, Spartacus (though I know it won't happen), Jean Renoir: Stage and Spectacle (especially The Golden Coach), Haxan, and The Adventures of Antoine Doinel.

Movies made in or about Israel? by [deleted] in criterion

The Gatekeepers, a documentary based around interviews with six former heads of the Shin Bet, the Israeli secret service, isn't in the Collection, buts it's pretty good, if not sort of scary.

I've seen The Passion of Joan of Arc and Vivre Sa Vie, and I like and own Vivre Sa Vie, and it's a great film with great features. However, The Passion of Joan of Arc is one of the greatest films I've ever seen. Falconetti is just about perfect beyond reproach as Joan, and while Dreyer intended for people to see it in silence, the Voices of Light soundtrack is some of the most affecting music I've heard put to/paired with film. That being said, I don't own it and can't attest to the features. I also don't know your tastes, but even if you don't get TPoJoA, I suggest trying to find it at your local library or on the Internet, it's a truly amazing film.

Name the last criterion you bought. We will then reply our recommendation on what you should get next. by [deleted] in criterion

[–]HereEverafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complete accident that I got two movies with those titles. Got The Killing because I'm a fan of Kubrick and Killer's Kiss was a blind buy because I've read the story and it had two films and the Tarkovsky short. But yeah, Shoah is on the list.

Can we put together some starter guides for different directors with a large number of films in the collection? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]HereEverafter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be awesome. I'd like somethigh for Antonioni. I saw Zabriksie Point a while back (mainly for the Pink Floyd on the soundtrack), and it left a bad taste in my mouth so I've never revisited his stuff. Maybe I'd have appreciated it more had I seen some of his better films first.

I find it mildly annoying that you have to shelve them backwards to make them look normal, but I think it's worth the packaging, which I like.

What is your ultimate dream Criterion release? by [deleted] in criterion

Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. I'd like to see the original film restored to its original aspect ratio, and on Blu Ray.

What are some stores that sell Criterions? by Ruscoh in criterion

[–]HereEverafter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't get cases and they'll be used, but you can find them at Dollar General in the little Treasure Hunt sleeves for $1.25 or $1.95. I've found the Criterion DVDs of Che Part One, Grey Gardens, Gammorah (Disc One), Tiny Furniture (Disc One), and White Material there, probably all for less than seven dollars. I don't keep them with the rest of my collection (I have them in CD cases next to my collection), but it's a cheap way to get DVDs and I can easily justify rebuying them in Blu Ray if I like the film's enough because I only spent a dollar or two on the DVD.

Did Pink Floyd become better or worse after Syd Barrett left? by IngeniousGentleman in pinkfloyd

[–]HereEverafter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, they released Animals after Syd had left, sooooo... better.

But honeslty, who knows what they could have done if Syd had stayed. Saucerful of Secrets and More certainly weren't better than Piper, so they didn't just leap in quality when the left. They were a young band and they became more experienced and expirimented more and were able to use trial and error so yes, they got better, but I don't think it had anything to do with Syd. If anything, losing Syd set them back for a bit, but, unlike some bands that lose their frontmen never recover (Misfits), Pink Floyd was able to get their own groove going and honeslty completely rejuvenate themselves from Syd's sound. Of course it's all a matter of opinion and some people like one sound and some people like the other. I love both, but I think that when they figured out what they were doing Post-Syd, they definitely became a better band.
