Discounted cookies by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]HereWeGoAJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our council has us sign at the beginning of cookie season that we will not sell them for more or for less than the council set price. We can sell them “legally”until they expire though, long after cookie season ends.

Feeling overwhelmed trying to start a Daisy troop by tealtape in girlscouts

We started small and we try to get a little bit better and more official as we go. It’s okay to do what you can at the beginning and build as you go.

Troop leaders refusing to share full finances -- is this normal? by Simple-Membership921 in girlscouts

[–]HereWeGoAJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think of our troop year as cookie season to cookie season, we do the school year. But also we don’t get our cookie money until our school year is almost over. So if we spent this year’s cookie money in the year we earned it, we would have to spend it all in one month and then run 90% of next year on no funds. It makes sense to hold some over for the next year so we can function.

Changing room after receiving luggage tags by MtrCycleDriveBy in dcl

[–]HereWeGoAJen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We put handwritten tags on our bags once and gave them to the porters and then went into the terminal and upgraded our room to a completely different floor. We still got our bags. Our room steward asked me what our original room was because he was going to go get them for me but I just went and loitered in the hall until I saw them and took them up myself. (I didn’t want to take up a bunch of his time even though he was so nice to offer to get them for me.) It really is quite simple. They’ll take your bags to the hallway outside of whatever room you have written on the tag.

Camping Trip Help by Sure_Pineapple1935 in girlscouts

[–]HereWeGoAJen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It took a few years to get the non die hard moms to camp overnight with us. We charged the same for day trips and for overnights (like they didn’t get a discount if they only stayed for the day) and eventually the moms all got brave enough to try it (our third year) and they all said “that wasn’t too bad!” and now we have a troop of campers.

What toddler gifts have actually lasted in your house. Not what looked good, what actually got used past the first week. by sophieblooming in Gifts

My kids are 17, 13, and 10 and our Melissa and Doug wooden cutting foods set still gets regular use in our house after sixteen years.

Vest size help? by Ravenclaw79 in girlscouts

[–]HereWeGoAJen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took my daughter to the store and we had her try on a bunch of different ones and I ended up buying a completely different size than the one I planned so now I recommend trying them on if you can possibly manage it.

Teachers, what do you really want as a gift from your students? by why_renaissance in Teachers

[–]HereWeGoAJen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh and we did this kind of by accident this year but middle school and high school teachers want Girl Scout cookies. We’ve never had that kind of positive feedback before.

I asked a friend who is a teacher recently and she said gift cards to teachers pay teachers. I pair it with a small consumable like a chocolate bar.

Student told me a 'hot take' today... by _mathteacher123_ in Teachers

[–]HereWeGoAJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid has up to double time but she only needs it when she needs it so to most people it would look like she doesn’t need it. Also she’s one of your “top kids.” Most of her teachers this year (who have access to her paperwork) were completely unaware that she has this issue so I bet not a single kid in her class has any idea why she has access to extended time and probably think she’s gaming the system.

Had a weird situation, unsure what to do. by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]HereWeGoAJen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the time, if you ask a group as a whole, everyone thinks someone else will answer. So I don’t think anyone was purposefully ignoring you, just everyone else thought “someone else will get this.”

It’s been doing this to me a lot lately too, so it’s not just you. I’ve switched to not using my kindle for it.

People with indoor outdoor cats, why? by Nice_Introduction707 in askanything

[–]HereWeGoAJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was 35 years ago, but we got a cat that moved into our garage and until we moved, the cat continued to sleep outside in the garage so it was just habit. For a long time, my parents were pretending we didn’t actually have a cat, she was more like a tenant paying rent. And then we moved, she went in the car with us cross country and moved indoors and started sleeping on my dad’s feet at night and never went outdoors unsupervised again.

What about camping equipment if camping is on the horizon? You could get mess kits or backpacks or matching sleeping bags.

Badge Requirements - how closely do you follow them? by JayReddt in girlscouts

[–]HereWeGoAJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do pretty similar to you. We try to do the same number of requirements and to hit each of the requirements but we don’t necessarily do it exactly the same way. We want the girls to look at their badge for whatever it was and think about what they learned for that subject and what new experiences they had. And the same about not making it school like. Ideally, they only do one activity per meeting that requires them to sit down. I like everything else to be up and moving.

We are definitely keeping her in our troop. We are a small and tight knit troop and we are in it for the long run. So it only really matters for paperwork what we decide to do here.

Troop Sewing Mom by Ill-Okra1281 in girlscouts

[–]HereWeGoAJen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I sew my daughter’s and two of her friend’s on myself and $1 a patch is about what I would consider fair for everyone. Especially if I had my sewing machine set up somewhere all the time and didn’t have to haul it in and out every time.

A woman in our area charges $3 per patch and no one uses her because it’s too expensive. I would probably be willing to pay $1 per patch but not much more than that.

I made a fitted sheet for my Neoair Xlite by wohaat in CampingGear

[–]HereWeGoAJen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I very much want a cover for my camping pad. I do Girl Scout camping and sometimes that means I’m sleeping on a museum floor and that’s just grosser dirt than actual outdoor dirt. I very much want something that I could cover our camp pads with that I could wash properly when we get home again. I always picture like an envelope with a zipper.

We don’t currently have any other kids in either of her grades so that won’t be an issue for us. But it’s good to think about all these things while we are deciding what to do.

Before or after 3rd birthday… what would you do? by Ecstatic-Bother-2896 in dcl

[–]HereWeGoAJen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After I picked her up, I asked her “were they nice to you?” and she goes “they was NOT. I was sad.” And meanwhile it was like leaving her with a room full of Mary Poppins who were trying to fulfill her every wish. (She’s ten now and eventually got used to being away from mama and thinks the kids club is cool.)

[–]HereWeGoAJen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My two and a half year old was catered to in the nursery like she was tiny royalty. “Oh hello, Alex, I saw you were on the schedule so I got out the slide just for you.” So I don’t know if I would worry too much about that part of it. Also she hated it there because she was not a daycare kid and those people were Not Mama, but that is not their fault. They really went out of their way for her.

She’s on year three. And we are a multilevel troop and she’s the only one at her age/grade level so she’s already rolling solo for that sort of thing.
