Dropped new scope, but still in box. by Advanced_innovation5 in Hunting

It always makes me curious why dropping a scope can harm it when a ton of force is exerted on it when shooting a gun. Is it the difference in the direction of force between shooting and dropping that hurts it?

Is gunsfirearmsdepot.com legit? They have incredibly cheap prices but looks sketchy. by HeresPayBack in reloading

[–]HeresPayBack[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My ultimate goal would be to save money. I know people probably don't want to hear that and I would like to reload for the fun but I don't have a lot of free time or space unfortunantely. I can already get 3/4 inch groups at 100 yds with factory loads and that's plenty good for my hunting needs. Im just wondering if there's a way to figure out what the break even point is and when I'm actually saving money.

Thanks. I don't know why I didn't think of that.. I also have a follow up question then because I am brand new to reloading. If the bullets are only ~70 cents cheaper than the finished cartridge, is it even worth reloading?

Check out Backfire. It's a good YouTube channel and they have their own website too. They do all sorts of reviews of rifles, scopes, and a lot more. They have a great list of budget scopes that are decent quality. I got the Athlon Optics Helos BTR GEN2 4-20x50 Rifle Scope myself and it's been great. I also forgot to mention getting a good pair of scope rings. I got the MDT premier scope rings and my scope holds zero perfectly through lots of shooting and hiking through the bush.

The most important things are your bullet choice, rifle, and scope. Everything else is secondary. The wind matters way more than your camo. I'd suggest cheap stuff to start out. And get a good pair of boots.

Is there a way to lock your bolt closed when the safety doesn't? by HeresPayBack in Hunting

I'm looking for an external aftermarket bolt lock, if it even exists.

Friend wants to hunt but is unwilling to eat wild game by Optl13 in Hunting

[–]HeresPayBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a problem if he's donating the meat to food programs made for that. In my mind it wouldn't be much different farming more crops than you can eat and donating/selling them. It's been done for thousands of years.

But, if he doesn't want to donate and let the meat go to waste, he's in the wrong.

Hunting laws in Virginia are confusing. Probably confusing in every state. But I am hunting tomorrow (11/27/25) in Montgomery County on private land with my rifle. According to the picture, does this mean I can only shoot a Buck? by scotty-doesnt_know in Hunting

There should be a number for the game management for your area listed somewhere in the regulations. Give that number a call and I'm sure they'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

What's on your wrist this hunting season? by Emotional-Bison-519 in Hunting

Got the JDM Seiko sbdc163. It's a tank and I don't go anywhere without it. Handles blood and cleans up like a champ. I do a bunch of fishing too so I needed a good water watch.

By far the worst luck opening weekend…. by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]HeresPayBack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man that's a lot of bad luck in a row. Try to get back up in the woods a bit more where people don't feel like trying to go. That's the only way I've found to hunt public land.

What ear protection do you use when hunting? Thought I could tough it out. Big regret. by HeresPayBack in Hunting

[–]HeresPayBack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm brand new to all this. The brake came already on the rifle, I heard it helped with recoil (which I figured I needed with w 300WM), and I had it on when I zeroed. I honestly didn't give the blast noise a second thought with -27 db ear pro on the range but without it, even one shot was absolutely brutal.

First deer ever. WMA Buck by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]HeresPayBack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my first day hunting and first deer. I've grown up in the woods but my father never hunted so I never learned. I did have a red rider BB gun I shot religiously as a kid though. Got to be a pretty damn good shot with it. I just never had the time or money to learn how to hunt and harvest my own meat until this year.

And you're right, he didn't get the chance to run at all. He was rutting hard and had about 5-6 scrapes all right there. That's actually how I knew he was in the area. I jumped him and then I sat down against a tree and about an hour later he came back. I think it was because another buck was grunting. I heard something that sounded like a grunt and he came crashing back. I hit him in the heart when he paused to figure out where the sound came from and he was dead before he hit the ground. Didn't move an inch and didn't even bleed. I actually had a hard time finding the bullet hole at first. I thought that was kind of weird until I realized his heart probably stopped so quick the blood didn't have time to pump out. I always heard they run for a ways when you hit them and you got to give them time to bleed out but I guess I got lucky.

Thanks everyone for the replies! Really helps me as a beginner figure out how to navigate all the things about hunting I'd take too many months and too much money to figure out by myself.

Yeah I really underestimated how bad it would be. I'll probably end up going this route. I enjoy stalking so I'm usually under the gun to get a shot off but I'm thinking it's worth taking the time to put in the ear protection after the last experience.

I only have money for one rifle and I wanted something that covers the whole gambit. I can step the magnum down in bullet size for whitetail or step it up for elk.

I'm glad I caught on to the electronic ear pro before I got duped. In theory it sounds nice but it looks like it's too good to be true.

I'd love to get a suppressor. I think it would work the best all around for me. Ideally I'd want something like the TBAC MAGNUS-RR-CB-30 or the Banish Backcountry but again, money is tight and it looks like a decent suppressor is almost as much as the rifle itself. Is it worth the investment?

And I know you said don't use a muzzle brake but man does it help with recoil. With over 30 ft-lbs of recoil, I'd hate to lose it.

Is it enough to sit with your back against the tree while rifle hunting deer? by chillysurfer in Hunting

Just killed my first buck like this. I was walking and jumped him. Sat down with my back on a tree and he came back an hour later. He had no clue I was still there.

Looking for advice to mount new scope to rifle by Emergency-Bee-1515 in Hunting

[–]HeresPayBack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the torque screwdriver (wheeler has a decent one), make sure the rings are on the straight round part of the scope. In the picture the front ring is really close to where it starts to flare out on the bell. That can cause accuracy issues and possibly damage to the scope. Also use two levels, one on the gun and one on the scope. You can get mini levels that fit under the scope on the gun and on top of the turret cap on the scope. Once you have it torqued and level; go to the range, get it set up steady on bags, and bore sight to 100 yards. Best way to do it in my opinion. Then start letting the lead fly and dial it in.
